DT Topic re: Scott Pagano

May 1, 2015, 3:18 PM

I watched him get manhandled against the Sooners. I am a bit concerned here. Draft Drama aside, Josh Watson left some big shoes to fill as well.

Still learning to play with leverage

May 1, 2015, 3:24 PM

Plays to high so his brute strength is negated at times. It will come

Re: Still learning to play with leverage

I couldn't agree more. Those are the things that will come with time. Pagano may be able to dead lift a chevy, but he'll have to translate his weight room strength into an ability to handle offensive linemen who've been trained on how to deal with DTs. It will take much more than raw strength. It's leverage, footwork, arm strength and hand position. Not only can you not let the OL get beneath you, you can't let him get inside your arms. If he gets to your chest, you're done. I lost focus once playing LB and an offensive guard got into my chest with leverage. For the rest of that play, I went where ever he wanted me to.

Dan Brooks.

Gage might help with that. State record with 4 titles in

May 1, 2015, 3:36 PM [ in reply to Still learning to play with leverage ]

wrestling might be enough credentials I think. I asked him is there any formal instruction in football that includes his knowledge of leverage/ physics etc that he knew of. It seems to me that that same knowledge could also help in preventing injuries too. I can't remember if he answered me or not but is that done as a science? I do not have a clue

hard not to see the similarities between he and Grady.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes. Grady, Gage and their families are closely bonded. Gage

May 1, 2015, 3:46 PM

and his parents asked if they could get his # 50. They said it would be a great honor and Grady's Mom gave out hugs. Unfortunately, 50 was taken so Gage picked 95- his father's suggestion. Oddly enough, Grady wore no 95 in the Senior Bowl(?) and I suspect it wasn't by coincidence. Total Class.

evaluating HS football talent, but Pagano did not impress me in the all-star game. He didn't show any explosiveness, and it looked to me like he got pushed around a lot. Obviously our coaches see something, and I'll trust them on this one.

Lack of explosiveness, quickness off the snap.
Strong as a bull but seems slow.
Gets beat to the punch which can negate his strength

Personally, I think his best days are ahead

May 1, 2015, 5:26 PM

and folks are going be surprised how good this year's DL will be.
And SP.

My only real concerns for the 015 team...Depth at OL, and LB.

Most people think that DT are better massive and powerful. What Grady Jarrett should have taught us all is that the best line men shut off the gaps and let players like Anthony and Steward wreak havoc on offensive backfields. It wasn't until this year we saw the power of Jarrett. I think Pagano just need time to develop his leverage game.
