Drew Brees, Nick Foles, Sam Ehlinger, Kirkland Michaux

Great read in today's The News & Observer!!
This program (Westlake) has seen Drew Brees,” Todd Dodge said. “This program has seen Nick Foles. This program has seen Sam Ehlinger. This program has seen Kirkland Michaux, who was our starting quarterback when we won in 2019. This program has seen Taylor Anderson. … When I talk about all those other great quarterbacks, between the five of them, there were two state championships won: one in 1996 and one in 2019. Well, Cade, if we win on Saturday, he will be a part of back-to-back-to-back state championships and he will be the starting quarterback for two of them.
“I’ll let all the people in Westlake debate who the greatest of all time is, but I can tell you right now his name CK) is right at the top of the list, if not, the top.”

He is a stud. He needs to get stronger so we can run him a lot and keep him healthy. He likes to improvise. I was watching his film and he is fun to watch.

Just curious, why do you think Clemson needs to run him a lot?

I prefer we don't. It's just something we do. I wish DJ rarely ran. Either way, Cade likes to improvise and is pretty fast and will take off and take some hits. He will be able to absorb those hits a lot better after a year or two.

I completely agree that he needs to (and he will) bulk up a little when he arrives.
I also agree that scrambling on pass plays will be something that he provides when nobody is open.
I disagree that running the QB a lot is "something we do".
We typically give QBs 3-5 carries per game unless it's working incredibly well.
We run QBs just enough to make defense honor the option.
DJ's run game this season turned more into a power run game because he has a very different style and struggled with the read game. He still didn't have a lot of called runs for him in terms of percentage of overall plays called.
I hope once he gets on the field that Cade is used more like Trevor in that a lot of his damage running the ball comes from scrambling on passing plays and picking up yards when the defense is in man coverage.

Maybe not designed runs, but they end up running it a lot either way. I should have phrased it differently. Trevor ran it over 100 times his sophomore year. Deshaun Watson over 200 times in his sophomore year. Cade likes to improvise and he will be out there running, He will be exciting.

I get what you are saying.
Also I think 100 sounds like a big number but over 15 games it comes out to less than 7 carries per game.
Once you factor in that sacks count as QB carries in the college game, you are likely talking about 5 called runs/scrambles per game. Pretty limited part of the offense.
Deshaun certainly had a lot more designed run calls when he was at Clemson, and I think a lot of that can be attributed to the fact that he was far and away the best we have had a reading the option plays that we run.

Kind of is actually. DJ has already ran the ball 100 times this year. It is something we do. It's a subtle part of our offense. We don't recruit statue pocket passers. Our guys are more balanced. It's not as if we are trying to protect our qb by limiting them running.

We have relied on mobility at the QB position since

the early 2000s. Even more so when Chad Morris came to run the offense. It's not a secret.
Stop being a condescending #### just because you're old and need a nap.

Look at all the top programs they have a very quick Mobil QB that first can get away from the pass rush but when they have an open lane they can go 30 yards or more or take it to the house. All defenses have to scheme for this which leaves them less time to focus on stopping other things: Alabama Ohio State Oklahoma even Georgia to a limited away I have never coached football but it is obvious that a Mobil running QB gives you another chance out there. Boyd, Jordan, others we have had. I love DJ but he does not give us this dimension but in a very limited way. We never seem to have the O Line that allows a QB to stand in the pocket long. I remember Dashawn and Trevor taking a beating at times .

Exactly. That's where Cade is perfect.

I was with you all the way until you called Boyd a mobile type QB.
He ran straight ahead like a fullback.
When it was time to scramble, like DJ, he took forever to get going.
The difference with him was that he still ran like fullback once he got going so he was able to break some tackles and pick up some yards scrambling.
It certainly wasn't because of his mobility though.
