Double-edged sword

Apr 10, 2022, 11:28 AM

We rave about our D-line quality depth and are critical of the O-line. Curious about the number of players on each line, I counted:

19 DT/DE = 4.75 players/position

16 LB = 5.33 players/position in 4-3, 4.0+ players/position in 3-4 (sometimes use a DE or S)

18 OL = 3.6 players/position

8 TE = 4.0 players/position

It would seem that the defense has better odds of functional depth right out of the gate.

Recognizing that D-line players need more rotation during a game, it makes sense to have a few extras, but when given the level of talent on the D-line, we could possibly cut back on the number of scholarship players there and increase the number on the O-line - so long as we maintain the average talent level on the D-line.

We seem to run position group quality in spurts..... WRs were terrific, but have dropped off, QBs were phenomenal, but have dropped off (temporarily, I hope), CBs and Ss come and go, LBs are hopefully on the rise. This is likely part talent and part coaching differences.

The consistent issue seems to be the O-line, so what is the problem? Is it a lack of talent, lack of development, blocking schemes, coaching or need for more position players? Often, we hear that injuries on the O-line keep us thin because we lack depth. Should we recruit more OLs and increase O-line rotation to have fresh functional depth and guard against attrition due to injuries?

I think we need to crank up that NIL machine and get some OL talent in numbers that can build year after year consistency of talent - much like we've done with QBs, DTs, DEs and WRs.
