HOLY COW...some company just bought BYU 36 scholarships

Aug 12, 2021, 5:58 PM

I can't imagine 36 walk-ons...seems like this would crush the 85 man limit!?

This is going to be a mess.

Should never be allowed to make any decisions

Just give everybody time to figure

Aug 12, 2021, 6:25 PM

out more ways like this and rich schools will field over 100 players like in the old days- sign 50 players a year to keep them off your opponents rosters

At a certain point, it seems like this is going to be

Aug 12, 2021, 7:00 PM

a very big issue.

However, You still can't put but 11 on the field at any time.

Said differently, kids are going want to play a lot, or a little or know they're going to play in a year (maybe two).

It doesn't do kids any good to go to a school, and never sniff the field.

Honestly, these kids are not going to give BYU any advantage in any games this year.

Re: At a certain point, it seems like this is going to be

Aug 12, 2021, 8:07 PM

You're wrong, because there are 2 star players or 3 star players who will take a covered walk on spot at a better program hoping to compete knowing they can transfer with no cost if it doesn't work out in a year or two.

and those are players that would have has scholarships at more pedestrian programs.

You are giving any school that can afford it unlimited scholarships and then letting them cut and dispose of players after they've tried out for a preseason practice or freshman year.

It's what the SEC is doing currently with no number limits.

Re: At a certain point, it seems like this is going to be

Aug 12, 2021, 11:24 PM

In your scenario,

1) Why would anyone transfer if they are getting paid at said school. If the scholarship is so valuable, why would anyone transfer?

2) Back to my original point, how does this impact the on the field talent in this year instance at BYU? How does this "ruin" college football? Players that are the 83rd-112th best on a team are making no impact on the field, or, scoreboard.

3) Once you starting getting down to 2-3 star players, those are a dime a dozen. There is no shortage of players to fill the void at other programs without these "scholarships".

4) However, I think we'll see other this happen at other schools if there is some perceived advantage.

5) It won't be long before these companies will realize that their money is having no on the field impact and pull out anyway

I'm not ready to throw up my arms and say "ah, this is going to ruin college football".

Schools can't lock in all of those players like they once could due to the transfer portal.

But schools can give out their 85 scholarships

Aug 13, 2021, 3:23 PM

to the best recruits like they do now and then have one of these "companies add the next 10 4 stars to the roster that otherwise would have to go to another school. Is that not an advantage over current restrictions?

The next iteration could be something similar to a Superpac or Kickstarter, where fans can donate small amounts of cash to a player for a good game or play. Why need any quid pro quo, if you want to break off a few bucks for a backup who laid someone out in garbage time or reward the OL with a round of beers, that seems fun.

Aug 12, 2021, 7:25 PM

So many questions. So much I have no clue about.

Are walk-ons allowed to eat in the athletic cafeteria? Do they have to pay "fair market price" for their food?

I'm assuming that the money they get from the company is taxable income, but I'm not sure. Can the company pay the school directly and somehow circumvent it being taxable income to the player?

I think it has to be taxable income. The guy said, "We are going to pay you the amount to cover your tuition." I don't know, but I would assume that is how these players would not count against the 85 scholarship limit. But, I'm sure some lawyers are involved and figured it all out.

The article said something about the company has signed a contract with the school that allows them to put emblems on practice helmets. If photos are taken with players in their practice helmets, is this a violation of NIL? Or is it exempt like wearing a Nike swoosh on a uniform?

Re: HOLY COW...some company just bought BYU 36 scholarships

Aug 12, 2021, 7:50 PM

Any monetary benefit you receive is taxable by the IRS. College athletes have avoided this in the past because it was considered a nonprofit. NIL money is not nonprofit money. That money is paid to the school but for the student. Scholarships are typically paid through empty which is a nonprofit. It’s pretty complicated but I think this money will be taxable.

Re: HOLY COW...some company just bought BYU 36 scholarships

Aug 12, 2021, 8:18 PM [ in reply to Re: HOLY COW...some company just bought BYU 36 scholarships ]

If it's income it's taxable, but the tax rate is extremely low if they don't have other income.

On $25k they MAY owe $1k in taxes and that's only if they don't get some sort of break on tuition (in state or whatever) to make the initial number lower.

If they can make it some sort of scholarship, then tuition is not taxable but room and board would be.

Re: HOLY COW...some company just bought BYU 36 scholarships

Aug 12, 2021, 8:33 PM

They'll pay more than that in jock taxes, because they'll have to pay accountants to figure out what they owe in each state they play a game in, what the value of the taxable fringe benefits are, because they'll be "self-employed" they'll have to pay both halves of their FICA taxes.

Almost all of the walkons would likely be Mormon which

would make their tuition only about $3k per semester. This is not nearly what it appears IMO.

Nebraska absolutely feasted on their walk on program in the 1990s. Their line ups were filled with walk ons. I remember an extensive SI article on this back in the day and how Nebraska gamed the system.

How is a small/mid-market university in a non-P5 conference getting walk-on scholarships paid for the end for all small/mid market Universities?

I was wondering when something like this would occur.

The scholarships are one of the few things that help with parity. This will be awful if Alabama can have 120 scholarships.

Quality guys aren't going to hang around if they don't see the field. You can only play so many at one time, and a real talented guy is not likely going to be happy with a couple snaps a game because you have 15 other quality starters at WRs every year. Back in the day you could stockpile those guys because they couldn't transfer without penalty.

Re: HOLY COW...some company just bought BYU 36 scholarships

Aug 14, 2021, 2:09 PM

Yeah, but the transfer market takes a lot of the risk out of a borderline recruit taking a chance as a free ride walk-on at Bama or another blue blood. If they wash out, just keep that eligibility and go where you would have probably ended up anyway.

For a high 3 star that maybe feels underrated, this is an angle. Definitely not a popular route though.
