Alabama the greatest team ever (ESPN says so)

Oct 17, 2018, 4:14 PM

The 2016 Bama team that we beat for the Natty in early 2017 was called the most dominant team ever as there defense had given up so few scores and their defense had scored in every game except against us (thanks Renfro for the tackle on the DW4 fumble!).

Is this Alabama team really that great? They seem to play every team at home and Ole Miss, Mizzou, and Arkansas are teams that would come in the bottom of the ACC. They beat Texas aTm at home after having game film unlike us and that game turned on some turnovers in the 2nd.

I would much rather have the top defense over a top offense. Give up 30 + to Arkansas shows a weakness regardless of how many the offense scored.

I guess my point is I would rather play this Bama team than the 2016 one with the top defense in the nation. Maybe I am alone on this view.

So when we beat them for the NC, does that make us the greatest ever?

No it makes us the under dog that caused the upset over the greatest team ever. We're Clemson you know they will do anything to not give us our credit!

I think it should but it is funny how quickly the narrative can change. They might start saying Bama had a soft schedule after we beat them. They don't mind saying that AFTER the season is over but during the season, you can lose three in the row in the SEC and still be ranked #22.

No. They'll just say the next year's Bama team is the greatest ever.

Seems I have heard that before.

Not by a long shot...

I did an analysis in 2016 on them, and in the post WW2 era their defense was something like #31. Very very good, but no where near the best. The most crushingly dominant teams since WW2 were Army '44 and Pacific '49, with FSU 2013 in the top five. To be in that stratosphere you need to win all your games on an average of 50-4. When you are holding teams to just over a FG a game, all year long, then you can be considered among the best ever. Bama 2016 was typical eSECpn hype.

Don't worry about it until after 1/7/19

Every year the National Championship and the Heisman Trophy are awarded before the end of September by the talking heads. By the end of October a new leader is named and everything gets shuffled again in November so quit worrying about it. So far this season I will have to say that Bama has looked good but this isn't the first time. In 2016 they looked just that good and we know how that ended up.

So far the Tigers have not looked as good as we had hoped but I contribute it to TE and JC trying to figure out what our game plan was. We had two different QB's with two different styles and strengths while trying to figure out what to do with the stable of horses that are running backs. As one talking head said that Clemson needed to realize that we can just out talent everyone on the schedule and work from there. Now that KB is out of the picture hopefully TE can quit trying to plan for a running QB and let ETN and Co. take care of that and when they decide to stop the run game then let "The Arm" chunk it.

I have no argument about Bammer looking great so far this year but hopefully we have played only 40% of our games so far (6 of 15) and at the end of the season we will be back at the top.

With that said first thing first and that is take care of the wolfies this week end or all of this talk will a waste. If we want another shot at the Tide we must win this week end. It is a well know fact that when an SEC team loses to an underdog SEC team the winner advances in the ratings but the loser doesn't drop. In the ACC it is different but anyone who thinks that NCSU, BC, Duke or FSU are going to be cakewalks are in for a rude awakening whether you are a Clemson fan or a talking head.

Either way we can take care of the "This is the greatest team ever" talk on Jan. 7, 2019 but first we need to take care of the business immediately in front of us.
