Leaving before a bowl to transfer like TP or Ajou

Dec 27, 2021, 8:58 PM

why wouldnt you finish the seasn and hope you'd show something in that last game that increases your demand by others. YOu dont burn any more eligibility and the then transfer before next semester starts. YOu would get the bowl swag

Don’t think they would see the field enough to

Dec 27, 2021, 9:02 PM

matter. I think in Dabo’s mind once you hit the portal you are “All Out”.

yeah I get that. My point is why should a player announce it before the last game. I mean it isnt like they have any considerationfor their coaches or teammates anyway. get the swag and hope you get to ball out

This why TP didn’t play in the Carolina game. Word was circulating through the team that TP was transferring before the Carolina game. Guys don’t play once they have decided to transfer because they don’t want to risk injury and then be “stuck” where they are. No new team wants damaged goods.

I'm sure that Dabo really don't want that quitters blood line around any of his player, and risk them poisoning the minds of other players, and I couldn't blame him if that was indeed the case. From the first whisper of hearing that someone was just even considering the portal, get them the H&11 out of there fast as possible. Don't even let them show up anywhere around the players facilities!!!!

It used to be called, "clean out your locker and don't let the door hit your a33 on the way out".

To find another school before the openings fill up.

Exactly. They have to enter the portal to be considered at other schools and timing does matter.

In TP’s case, if he advised Dabo of his intent to transfer after the season, but still wanted to play in the bowl game, I suspect Dabo would have been ok with it. Partly because our depth is scary thin at QB, but also because he wants to honor his commitment in good faith.

Now, Ladson’s transfer conversation likely would have gone differently…

How when they weren't getting the playing time?

You really don't know about the next man up deal at Clemson. If DJ was to go down for any reason, it was suppose to be TP as the next man up, and he has screwed that up himself, but, bye bye, hit the door, and turn in everything that connects them to Clemson on their way OUT!!!

I wouldn’t be that salty on the TP transfer. Yeah, he didn’t pan out, but he gave his time and body to the team for 3 years. I don’t blame him for wanting to go start one year at a more appropriate level of competition, especially with another 5 star coming in behind him.

Ajou, different story… kind of makes you think twice about the developmental prospects. Train them for two years to be a role player and they bounce for a starter role elsewhere when ready (if he is).

Agree about Ajou Ajou!
E. Reuben and Ruke Ororohoho were both kind of project players and I wondered if they would bounce! They both got a ton of starting time and playing time due to injuries and held their own.

Your point about developing a player and then having them transfer can't be understated: "it stings more if you first believed in them"! Ajou would have ended up staring at a C. Michigan or E. Michigan or Wyoming or something! Some small school would no doubt have given him a shot. But, Clemson took him and gave him an opportunity to play at the highest level. Like many other aspects of life now - loyalty and commitment to others isn't a thing for many. You know: being part of something bigger than yourself and all!

Schools only have 85 scholarships and if a player is worth signing at a Power 5 school it would not be in his best interest to wait. The reality is that the vast majority of portal players will not sign with Power 5 schools or at least major powers.

For this year only, Dec 15 was a deadline

Dec 27, 2021, 9:48 PM

To enter the portal and be counted against an extra 7 initial scholarships. They were more likely to get picked up if they entered before that deadline, even guys who haven’t decided yet.

I’m hoping the extra counters go away and the blueshirt rules are modified. The only way the schools/NCAA can control the chaos now is strict limits, where a school can normally afford only one or two transfers.

74Tiger - I agree. Why not finish at least the season with your brothers! It's not like you are preparing for the draft.

I think it's more about being young and thinking, "it's always going to be their type of mindset"!

Unless they get a spot in Canada or Arena league or USFL - however many college games they get is it in terms of playing the great sport of football. We all know the percentages in terms of making it to the league.

These kids all of them including the "preferred" walk-ons at a Clemson or Alabama or Ohio State were all good players in H.S. The propaganda started there and built up to the point you see families getting their kid insurance policies(who riding the bench). A Tua having an insurance policy as a star was wise. But, some of these kids are doing so as 3-star players or 4 and 5-star players who struggle with the playbook and aren't getting on the field. In other words, once the recruitment process starts and everyone is writing you and wanting you and telling you how good you are: "it goes to a lot of(not all) of these players and players families heads"!
The kid if they aren't careful - "stop grinding hard"! Perhaps that was why they got noticed because they were just an "okay" athlete, but they competed hard. Or perhaps, they were more athletic in H.S. and never had to work! In college, everyone else is fast, strong, big, etc. too!
A year on the bench and the family can't understand why their "lil johnny" isn't on the cover of Sports Illustrated! Or leading off the ESPN highlights. Remember, they have been told and have thousands of letters and invitations asking for their services which validates their belief.
These kids are probably in other words 74Tiger - getting bad advice from outside people who aren't looking out so much for the kid; as they are their own vested interest. I don't know - of course - but that would be my guess!
The TP made it easy to "not sit-tight and just grind and get better and work"! Now, the move is to move on to where it's easier w/o working harder to get on the field!
