TNET: Keyshawn Johnson with terrible take on Trevor Lawrence

Keyshawn Johnson with terrible take on Trevor Lawrence

NFL analyst and former NFL standout Keyshawn Johnson knows a lot about catching a football from a quarterback. Trevor hasn't proven him wrong yet.

Re: So, uhhhhh, how to say this.....

Oct 22, 2021, 4:13 PM

His offensive line hasn't proved that they can protect him just long enough to find an open receiver. 95% of all the completed passes that Trevor has had, they were made bc Trevor had to use his legs to buy the time that an adequate offensive line should have gave him, and that alone would cut way down on the Int's that he has thrown bc he has usually been on the run when he threw the ball.

Obed, you have been a FB fan for a long time, and you should know that in the NFL much, much better players than what you will see on a college team, and those better players are in Trevor's face before a receiver can get open, and he is having to run for his life before his receivers can get any kind of separation on the defenders, and with the Jags receivers, it's usually just a half a step of separation, if that. There has only been a few times that they were wide open, but Trevor had already been flushed from the pocket...

Try watching all of the NFL games that he has played, and you should see without a doubt why Trevor hasn't done what was expected of him as an NFL rookie. Just bc he was able to get away from the rush at the college level about 98% of the games that he played in at Clemson, playing against mediocre ACC teams, it doesn't mean that he was a miracle man!!!

Trevor has had more Int's in the NFL, than he had through out his college career, and that is bc he don't have an adequate NFL offensive line protecting him in his rookie season!!! IMO with Trevor being an NFL rookie, he has done better than what he should've been able to do with a #### poor Offensive Line playing against NFL players that were elite players at the college level. So it sounds to me like Keyshawn Johnson, and you expected Trevor Lawrence to perform miracles as a first year NFL rookie QB with an offensive line that probably wouldn't have been a top offensive line at the college level!!!

I have watched all of Trevor's games to this point in his rookie season, and IMO, I'm surprised that he hasn't suffered a season ending injury to this point of his NFL career, and I'm serious. The kid is actually tougher than I believed he was playing at Clemson, and I actually thought that he should have stayed at Clemson another season just for getting bigger, and stronger to play against bigger, stronger, faster NFL players. And he has taken some hits that a lot of NFL QB's would have been taken to the side lines to make sure they were able to compete the rest of the game, and Trevor jumps right back up on his feet, and he goes to the next play like he wasn't touched!!!! Put an adequate O Line, and a couple of elite WR's in front of Trevor Lawrence, and that kid will take his team to playoffs, and possibly to the supper bowl with a very good chance of winning his first supper bowl bc, Trevor Lawrence is the real deal, and he can be a great QB with a good offense!!!!

Deshaun's rookie season OL was no better than Trevor's.

Oct 23, 2021, 12:48 AM [ in reply to Re: So, uhhhhh, how to say this..... ]

and yet DW's rookie season was far more impressive than TL's has been so far. Trevor's biggest issue, going back to CU, is that his mechanics break down quickly under pressure. The best OL isn't going to prevent pressure all the time.

TL is going to get there, but in addition to a better line, he needs more development, and that's not going to happen under Urban Meyer.

Oct 22, 2021, 10:32 AM

Peyton Manning and the Colts sucked his rookie year. You kind of need a team around you. Trevor would have 9 wins minimum this year if he were on the Bills. The Jags are building a whole roster it seems. I still don't get why the would take ETN in the first round with all of their needs and already having a good running back. That was a bad pick for their roster in the 1st round. They should have gone OL or something on D.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Keyshawn Johnson with terrible take on Trevor Lawrence

Oct 22, 2021, 3:52 PM

My 2 cents, but the Jags were sitting flush before the draft with picks and cap room. If you know you're going after a Trevor Lawrence, use the cap space to load up on FA OL studs and give him a line that'll take care of him.

They didn't, their line sucks

There's a reason the same teams are in the basement year after year and you just spoke of one of them. They are clueless.

Re: TNET: Keyshawn Johnson with terrible take on Trevor Lawrence

Oct 22, 2021, 12:11 PM

"I don't mind where Trevor Lawrence is right now as a rookie," he said. "He is certainly growing and getting better each week. But this whole putting him in "once-and-a-lifetime generational quarterback..."

This is not a "terrible take" on Trevor, this is reality. You can't crown him the next Peyton Manning until you start seeing production that leads to wins. It is going to take time because he does not have the supporting cast around him yet but, if Jax does their job with good drafting and free-agent signings, Trevor has the ability to deliver and become as good as we think he can be.

I hate these misleading headlines like this that don't live up to what was actually said. TNET should be better than this.

Keyshawn Johnson was a #1 pick too

Oct 22, 2021, 12:36 PM

Keyshawn was the first overall pick too.

Guess what? The Jets only won one game his rookie season!

Too bad the Jets didn't select Marvin Harrison instead, he's in the HOF. Keyshawn has a career as a talking head making noise. Still a me first guy.

Keyshawn, maybe you have forgotten that the number one selection in the nfl draft usually goes to the WORST team. In Jax’s case it is true. How about getting some players around him that can add some support by being something other than the WORST team in the nfl. You, being the loud mouth that you are, want to make asinine statements like you just did. Grow up, Keyshawn, which I doubt you will ever do. Being the # 1 pick usually gets you one thing, a nice healthy signing contract, because you may be cripple before your rookie 4 year contract is done with the team that signs you!

Re: TNET: Keyshawn Johnson with terrible take on Trevor Lawrence

Oct 22, 2021, 2:47 PM

Keyshawn has always had a bad take on Trevor. True, he is a rookie and made mistakes early - consider his team (1-15 last year) and his coach (no NFL experience). He has improved each week and looked good two weeks ago, and very good last week. Keyshawn went off when other other analyst stated he was the real deal. Keyshawn put his play down and referenced Justin Fields, which he thought should have been the # 1 pick last year. It will not matter how well Trevor does, Keyshawn will talk him down due to his bias towards Trevor.

“Key” is an ESPN homer, one of their worst, and an overall bust with his first round selection.

He isnt wrong at this point in Lawrence's NFL career. We have the same problem at Clemson right now. The verdict is still out on both of them. Many QB's tear up the college landscape and bust in the NFL. I am not saying Lawrence will fail but only time will tell. I think he will be ok.

Trevor would still be QB1 and it wouldn’t be close. He is better than Wilson, Fields, Jones and Lance. Re: Jones, Trevor’s arm talent is light years better. Jones is a check down machine and still has 6 picks ytd. Sadly the Jags and Jets are the least talented nfl rosters. If you put Trevor on a talented roster, the sky is the limit.

Generational

Oct 22, 2021, 7:11 PM

Yea, he's going to be generational. What would Clemson's record be today if TL was the QB? Well, I think it would be 6-0. Sorry that the OL stinks but we only lost one player of significance which was Carmen. Everyone except Tate has played a lot of snaps and came back bigger, stronger, and more experienced. TL ran for his life behind the CU line against all but the weakest of opponents. Still got it done. Guess Keyshawn missed the next to last play of the Jags win. They ran an 8 yard pass play across the middle of the field from the shotgun with five seconds remaining and got the clock stopped with 1 second remaining. Anybody put a stopwatch on that release time? It was in and out of his hand on a line in roughly 1 second. How many QB's in the NFL can make that play? Less than half I would say. Just starting to get comfortable and the only limitation is some supporting cast ala Matthew Stafford.

Oct 22, 2021, 7:57 PM

People seem to forget what Peyton's rookie year was like. He had a LOT of picks, some rather bad. There IS a reason teams get the #1 pick after all. I actually had a guy argue with me after their rookie seasons that Ryan Leaf would be better than Peyton based off of their rookie years. Point is, let's just give him time before announcing him anything, bust or boom as there are a LOT of variables, starting with the head coach.

I bet TL would prefer less hype too… he knows he will get it

Oct 23, 2021, 7:51 AM

Done, but the hype is unnecessary.

And yes, I believe he will be just like Manning when it is all said and done.

Will he be like Tom Brady? That remains to be seen. Brady is the GOAT QB. He is a durable, smart, quick decision maker but ice cold cool under pressure. A quiet, yet fierce competitor. And he has had a great O line and surrounding team helping him out as well for most of his career.

TL is the real deal. You can see it in every down he plays. As he gets some pieces to help with the O line and receivers, he will look even better and better to folks like Keyshawn who looks at wins as the only way to judge a good QB.

Also, keep in mind, Jacksonville had the first round pick for a reason. They had the worst team in the NFL! Think about that. Their D sucked, their O sucked and their special teams sucked. Drafting Trevor and ET didn’t fix all that sucking.

I agree with some who point out that drafting ET when they had a serviceable RB already seems like a mistake because a good O line would have been a better investment. That point is hard to argue with. Regardless, TL is gonna be just fine over time. I just hope he can stay healthy until he gets a good O line. ??

Look at who Trevor is throwing the ball to then look at who Joe Burrow is throwing the ball to and let me know if you see a difference. That doesn't even touch on the fact Trevors coach may not know what hes doing in the pros.
