Rumblings that Jeff Scott may be named as co-OC...

Dec 2, 2014, 2:03 PM

Riley maybe?

I think Jeff is certainly gonna be OC, but I'm thinking someone else is joining him.

This isn't a good idea

How will we know who to blame when we don't convert a 3rd and 1?

does co-OC come with some sort of badge or ring?

No, but it means mo' money, mo' money, mo' money

seriously, whoever the new QB coach is would probably be the other "co," depending on who that is we'll know who the real OC is. If Streeter, JS is the OC

I wouldn't mind it if Dabo got a little into the playcalling. It didn't exactly work when he first got hired but I think he's a little more prepared having been in the room with Morris the past few years. I don't see how he'd be much different than Scott tbh.

Please god no.

This is like saying "well I burned myself really bad the last time I touched that frying pan...but maybe if I use my left hand this time...."

The same thing could be said for promoting two unproven guys in Scott and Elliot. All I'm saying is guys can learn and get better. Even Morris will tell you he was a terrible coach until he got with Malzahn. There's no doubt in my mind that Morris made Dabo better as well.

One coordinates the first half and one coordinates the second half. The winner gets overtime.

At the end of the year the winner gets the coordinator position and the loser leaves town.

It's like rasslin :>)

Don't see a proven OC sharing a title, even with a step up.***

I could deal with this.

You've gotta believe in your guys, and you've gotta promote fresh young talent unless you want a coaching staff full of 70-year-old men. If you never give guys a chance, you'll never know.

On the other hand, if you reach and take a major flyer on a guy who absolutely, positively, has to get it right, and get it right now, you can wind up with a Billy Napier - a very good, young, promising coach who could also recruit his tail off, but who just wasn't ready for the job. Promoting him before he was ready may have set his career back ten years.

If you're going to promote Jeff Scott, backstop him. And especially backstop him with somebody who knows how to develop passing QB's - which is my biggest beef with what was otherwise a very successful stint by Chad Morris. Tajh Boyd did not develop into the pure passer he could have been. Cole Stoudt certainly did not appear to develop well; even after four years he had no ability to go through a progression, read the field, keep his feet alive in the pocket, or sense the rush well. Our system shared a lot of the same shortcomings as Urban Meyer's: our QB was a tailback/QB hybrid who could launch the deep ball and run, but who didn't ultimately develop the skills of a pure passer that would have truly pushed this offense into that Top-5-in-the-country level.

The thing I really like about Air Raid QB's, and the Air Raid system is, they put a premium on pure passing. The Air Raid adherents keep the ball in the air constantly over the course of a practice; I've heard Mike Leach's QB's, when you map their reps, end up getting something like two to three times the number of repetitions in practice as most systems. Air Raid guys go through their progression, keep their eyes and feet active, hit their reads bam-bam-bam, and get the ball out fast. It's why even average athletic talents, like Kliff Kingsbury (anybody remember the 2002 Tangerine Bowl nightmare?) and more recently, Clint Trickett at West Virginia have been highly successful in it.

Put a more athletic talent in that system - like, say, Geno Hayes at West Virginia a couple years ago, or that 6'7" howitzer-armed crazy man Mike Leach had at Washington State this past year - and you can make the scoreboard catch fire. I'd be real curious to see what somebody with the laser arm and accuracy of Deshaun Watson could do under this kind of tutelage. Especially when Watson still has his feet to get him out of trouble if it just plain ain't there, which is a luxury few Air Raid QB's usually have.

I'd be very excited about this combination, actually. It'd definitely address what's been, IMHO, the major shortcoming of our offense since we went to the HUNH.
