Help .. first trip to Clemson

Oct 25, 2013, 12:35 PM

I have a grandson 11 years old that has been a Clemson fan for the past three years, how I can't figure it out being that I tried everything in my power to get him to follow my Buckeyes.

They are flying into Greenville from Houston and staying there Friday night and driving to the game on Sat. November 23rd. Any tips on parking, what to do and see on campus. They are staying Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Westin returning to Houston Monday.

He has every Clemson jersey, regulation helmet, hats, t-shirts etc. how did I fail him?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

By God, you have an Einstein on your hands! Go with him

Oct 25, 2013, 12:40 PM

and he'll show you his genius. Serious business, it is exceptional and special Tiger fan or not.

Are the leaves turning yet up there? I hope so

Kudos for an 11-year old being the smartest person in

Oct 25, 2013, 12:45 PM

the family ;)

I don't know where to start on answering these questions. Downtown Clemson has a bunch of shops and will be thriving on game day, I suggest they walk up and down the street, visit the stores and take in the atmosphere.

Head to the 55 exchange in Hendrix for some ice cream.

Find some tailgaters with kids about the same age and they will be welcomed there, especially after hearing his story of becoming a Clemson fan.

There will be tons to see...get pictures on Bowman in front of Tillman.

Be sure he's in his seat in time to watch the team run down the hill.

This is important...explain to that young man that when the band plays Tiger Rag, many people in the stadium will make the woohoo noise. Under no circumstances should he do that. It is absolutely NOT a Clemson tradition.

Most importantly though, being a big Clemson fan, tell him to enjoy every minute of it...the first Clemson experience is one that will not be forgotten.

Strange Questions for you!

Oct 25, 2013, 1:07 PM

I have missed 2 home football games in 25 years. That weekend may be #3. My son is testing for his Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do that day, so depending on game time, I won't be able to make it. Does your Grandson/Family have tickets yet? If not, for a young Clemson fan who is going to his first game, I will GIVE him my tickets if I can't make it. I have 2 in the lower deck!

So, my next question would be how many people will be with him? Like I say, I MAY have 2 tickets!

I would suggest parking downtown. Get there early. Take in the campus. Take in the sites and sounds. Start to the game about an hour before the game and wait outside for the band to travel around the stadium. Get into your seats early (30 min before game). Watch a little of the warm up, the planes to fly over and the MOST EXCITING 25 SECS OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL!

He watched the FSU game with me and slept over that night, he was devastated. I spent an hour telling him of all of the suffering I did with Ohio State losses through the years. I did not mention Charlie Bauman #55 and his encounter with Woody Hayes in 1978 when he got fired after the game that Clemson won 17-15 in the Gator Bowl.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Growing older I've found that I'm equally rewarded if not

Oct 25, 2013, 3:55 PM

He wasn't the only one! I have left 4-5 games early. My first was the Orange bowl several years ago against WVU! I stuck it out until FSU put the 48th point on the board. Just tell him, as I have learn over the past 10 years (when my family did not come near me after we lost a game), that it is hard to go unbeaten through an entire season! Tell them we hope he has a wonderful time!

I want to share this with you as well. There are always some of "those" fans! I have been all over to games and have only experienced 3 fan bases I cannot stand. Georgia, Kentucky and South Carolina. See a pattern there? For the most part, Clemson has wonderful fans. I have heard it from visiting fans and where we have visited. They will have a great time!

Re: Help .. first trip to Clemson

Oct 25, 2013, 1:28 PM

A few more suggestions would be the Tiger Walk and the Tombstones (they put one up for every win over ranked opponents away from Death Valley) near the new indoor practice facility. If they go over into that area, Doug Kingsmore (baseball stadium) is open to the public so he could venture in there as well. Obviously the key as others have stated is to be in the stadium at kickoff to watch the Tigers run down the hill.

I can tell you that my dad and my brother are both huge Ohio State fans and go to a lot of games. When I took them to their first Clemson game, while I was a student there, they both agreed that they had never seen anything like it.

Make sure he goes onto the field after the game

Oct 25, 2013, 4:19 PM

and bring a Sharpie and something for players to sign (a hat, T-shirt, whatever).

At Clemson we don't charge the field after a big win - we go onto the field after every game, and a lot of players hang around to sign items for kids (and I guess some adults as well). It's a unique tradition - don't know of any other school that does it and I know of one conference that will fine you for it.

Once he does that, and sees the stadium from field level, you can forget the Buckeyes ever being #1 in his mind. But you can shoot for 2nd place!

Since that is Military Appreciation Day, he will enjoy seeing the military history that Clemson has to offer. Take him downtown and walk around the shops. Then walk him across Bowman to see the military displays there (they should be there being MAD day). Then take him around the campus being sure to stop by the Scroll of Honor to see the changing of the guard by the Company C4 Pershing Rifles (had to throw that in, I am a former rifleman). Also be sure to hit the Military Heritage Plaza and show him all the medals displayed there by former Clemson servicemen. I am thrilled for you sir. I hope you have a great time and check back in and let us know how it goes! I'll be around early that day so I'll look for the family in orange! LOL

More info

Oct 25, 2013, 7:01 PM

I put together a map with a few highlights.

Tiger walk is 2 hours before kick off through (6) Lot 5, which is immediately west of stadium. This is when the team and cheerleaders parade through the crowd into the stadium for warmups. Great opportunity to see coaches and players up close.

Get in your seat early, like 1 hour before KO. Definitely, do the "Meet At The Paw" after the game, where all fans are invited onto the field (win or lose) to meet players. You have to be in lower deck in order to get on the field. There are gates at each end zone, but some folks just jump the wall. Once on the field, it is absolutely a "must-do" to walk to the hill (East Endzone) and up to Howard's Rock. Let him give it a good rub (but don't try to break off a piece!)

I agree with a walk downtown to really get a sense of how the University and town are closely related. I suggest you do this early in the day. From (1) downtown, I'd walk to (2) Tillman Hall (the iconic clock tower). From there, I'd walk through (3) Carillon Garden, by the amphitheater, by the Calhoun house and take Fort Mill St to Death Valley and the (5) Scroll of Honor. You can look through the gate under the score board to see the (4) Rock.

After the game, the baseball stadium is usually open and you can walk through. The new indoor football practice building is also on that end of campus and the (9) tombstones are just outside of it.

My kids would never speak to me again if I didn't take them to get some homemade Clemson ice cream at the (7) 55 Exchange. That is a pretty good walk though and Clemson is not "flat land". We usually drive by there on our way out of town on Sunday. Opens at noon on Sundays.

I hope your grandson has an amazing time in Clemson. I grew up going to Clemson games with my family. Now I'm 48 and take my own family to most home games. It's a very special place.

Hope this helps. Go Tigers!
