Taking my family to the Chattooga for a rafting trip

May 5, 2021, 6:11 AM

haven't been in 20 years or better but when down the river a bunch of times when I was at Clemson. Started a trip with 7 of us and it grew to 13 over night. Rented a big house for a couple of days doing a zipline one day and rafting the next. They started talking about going down the Nantahala and I'm like no, if we are going that far we need to go down the Chattooga. Section III and Bull Sluice this time, maybe section IV next year...one kid is flying in for the weekend.

Done both. Nantahala was better IMO.

But Bulls Sluice is fun.

I nearly died on the Nantahala.

For serious.

Many long years ago, I got washing machined at Lesser Wesser

on a rented sit-on-top. When I finally came up, there were 4 or 5 people ready to toss rescue ropes and I remember thinking that must have looked way worse than it actually was. I guess a lot of beginners go down the Nantahala so anyone at the take out is hyper aware when somebody spills there.

I was in one of those rubber kayaks the rental places use.

I got dumped out and the thing landed on my head. I somehow got it off of me, reached out and miraculously grabbed hat and sunglasses in the water and went river swimming to the next eddy. One of the guides said, "You've got to swim to catch your boat." I informed them that I currently didn't give a #### about their boat.

Did you ever see anyone caught in a hydraulic on

May 5, 2021, 9:18 AM

bull sluice?

Sorry, just seeing this Neal.

At the levels most people run it (1.2 to 2 ft) Bull Sluice doesn't have a real keeper hydraulic. If you go in too high on the first drop you might get window shaded a couple times but it'll spit you out, and there's an undercut rock on the left side that disappears above 1.8 ft or so. I'm not saying it's never happened, but it's rare. Most people that get hurt there get mauled by that undercut rock.

Probably the most unassumingly dangerous rapids is Woodall shoals. Doesn't look like much and disappears above 2 feet, but is a class 6 keeper at 1.5-1.8 that will suck a swimmer in and just keep recirculating.

I did participate in a recovery option in the mid-90's for a gal that got caught in a strainer on Section 4 above Sock em Dog. That was pretty sad. Swimming anywhere in 5 falls is bad news.

If she's a screamer, she'll get you arrested.

Yep, we did too.

Don't think they even allow that now.
