Serious Poll: When'll S. Carolina football finally regress?

Oct 29, 2013, 3:55 PM

My personal opinion? I believe Spurrier will have them strong for another 5 years then hit a bump & retire. Said team will flounder again 'til next miraculous coach hire.

When will South Carolina football finally return to mediocrity?    [Results]

They won't win again this season in rather embarrassing fashion
Once Clowney's gone
Whenever Spurrier retires
Losing season in 2015
2016
Within the next 5 years
Within the decade
They will be top 25 material for the next 20 years straight
They will suddenly become a power & be renamed USCSr. after several championships
Their football program will eventually be permanently cancelled due to extreme recruiting violations
flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

USuCk has seen it's glory days come and go.

Oct 29, 2013, 4:05 PM

I think in the long run their being in the SEC may keep them competitive with us but I insist their better days are behind them.

Re: Serious Poll: When'll S. Carolina football finally regress?

Oct 29, 2013, 4:25 PM

I think this was they're last run at something big, tho they are still kinda hanging in the balance at an SEC Title game due to how bad the SEC East has been this year. But after Shaw and Clowney leaves this year, Its hard to see them winning 10 or 11 anymore for awhile. maybe 8-9. They won't hit mediocrity when Spurrier leaves, Spurrier will leave when they hit mediocrity! Which is sooner rather than later.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They'll regress in 2-4 years

Oct 29, 2013, 4:25 PM

But by regress, I mean probably 8-4 and finishing in the 21-Unranked range

and Clowney back to a bigger than Godzilla form when we play them and knock their train off the tracks for the next five seasons. I want us to beat a Coot team with few excuses going in. I want them squealing like a pig at the final gun. My opinion is that this is most likely their last opportunity for a good season in the near future so a win against us is the most important thing to them, even more than winning a good bowl. They may squeeze out one more good one at best.

Bring back the 3rd quarter exodus and our ownership of WB stadium.

Re: Serious Poll: When'll S. Carolina football finally regress?

Oct 29, 2013, 4:59 PM

It really just depends on the next coaching hire. Hiring Holtz, while it didnt lead to great success, gave them at least a foundation of credibility that they were serious then obviously hiring SS has taken them a long way.
They are now at least have potential so it just takes on mediocre or bad hire to send them into the basement.

Likewise, if they hit a homerun they could really contend in the east. In either case, Clemson had better be ready to pounce on the recruiting trail when SS retires so we can get a step up on them as they did to us when we fired Bowden.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't see any particular drop off in the near term other .

Oct 29, 2013, 5:06 PM

than the slight drop this year. They may be better next year. They will continue to be a thorn in our side as long as Spurrier is there, and after that depends on the hire.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A thorn in our side? That's not very pawsitive.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you want a serious answer...

Oct 29, 2013, 5:21 PM

I'll give it to you. We were projected to be better than we are based off of Clowney and the offense. What every prognosticator didn't even look at was replacing all the LB's and secondary. We're about where I thought we'd be now. I predicted at seasons beginning that beating UGA in Athens was going to be tough with Gurley and that we'd be doing good to come off a three game road trip 2-1. I expected that loss at Arkansas not UT and Mizzou is a total surprise.

Carolina is on some good mojo right now and team chemistry is building. I expect us to win out going into the Clemson game and then who knows. I honestly feel like it benefits Clemson to play us on the road. Dabo coaches, right or wrong, with a ton of emotion and sees to be the victim of his own hype at home sometimes.

As for next year, we have only four scholarship seniors so there is talent and depth. You don't easily replace a QB like Shaw (especially in the leadership area) and, obviously, losing Clowney is big. I think we'll struggle on Defense and have a good enough offense to get by. Probably 8-9 wins.

After that, Carolina will get better and become a very seasoned, experienced team for two years. After that, I'm not sure...that's getting in the time zone of a Spurrier retirement.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If you want a serious answer...

Oct 29, 2013, 5:54 PM

Good reply, Zeiganaut. Do you mean USC only has a total of four scholarship seniors on the entire team? If so, why is this? I'm surprised by the number and not sure if you instead meant four starting seniors.

I think South Carolina will be a bigger question mark than our team due to them losing Clowney and Shaw coupled with the inconsistency shown during this season. At the same time, we'll be losing some of our best offensive players (Boyd, Watkins, McDowell, maybe Bryant) and defensive players (Crawford, most likely Beasley).

The reasons I'm more optimistic about our squad are our depth at LB, the depth we will have in the secondary next season with Kearse, Alexander, Blanks, etc. & a very talented D-line. Stoudt/Kelly are both talented in their own right and can lead the team to a good, possibly great, season. We'll also have a lot of talent left at WR, TE, RB, and maybe-possibly-it-could-happen OL.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If you want a serious answer...

Oct 29, 2013, 10:32 PM

Carolina has a total of 6 seniors on the team. Two are non scholly walk-on's. Obviously, we will lose a couple more to the NFL that are eligible.

South Carolina is also the youngest team in BCS football.

Those are the facts. Most of you are smart fans, and I always enjoy listening to your perspectives about football.

Good luck winning out, until the last game of the regular season. Then rock on and win em all!

I wanted to verify the seniors that SCAR has and found this Phil Steele blog.

Of course you have to add in the loss of Clowney to the guys they will lose but unless there are other juniors that leave it looks like most everyone returns except Clowney and Shaw.

Do not iscount the fact that UF, TENN, UGA, MIZZ

Oct 31, 2013, 4:28 PM [ in reply to If you want a serious answer... ]

are all getting better. ##### had their chance to grab an SEC title during this stretch and only even won the east once. Quite frankly they blew it, and it may be quite a while, if ever again that Florida, Tennessee, and UGA are all this beatable at the same time. South Carolina will not out recruit these programs on a year in and year out basis, its simply not going to happen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Based on UF, it's all about the successor to SOS.

Oct 29, 2013, 7:51 PM

Very few programs make great hires in succession. Florida tried the Zook thing.....quickly realized their error.....bought Meyer for as long as they could.....but now they are average again. Frankly, as we are all painfully aware, sometimes it takes a decade or two.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This board focuses on them too much

Oct 29, 2013, 8:08 PM

But with that said, I'll throw in my 2 cents on that dump down the road.

I had a conversation with a coot friend of mine recently, and I explained to him that this is their high water mark. Will they ever have a running back better than Lattimore? Will they ever have a defensive force better than Clowney? Will they ever have a better coach than Spurrier? The answer to all three is a resounding "NO."

So what has that talent brought them? An East division title and the biggest butt whupping in SEC championship game history. The highest peak for the coots has resulted in an empty trophy case. They will be talking about 4 in a row (maybe 5 if they're lucky) for the rest of their lives. This is as good as it gets for them. I hope they've enjoyed it.

For all their supposed talent, they have never had their heads together. And they've had good teams, but they're not a good program. With their talent they should be undefeated right now. Instead, they have nail biters against vandy, ucf, and an overrated Missouri team. And a loss to Tenn. This board gets so riled up about the tigers underperforming, but those dirt peckers could write a book on it.

It won't last. They'll have a good season or two right after Spurrier, but he is the reason the talent is there. Everything you need to know about their program is right there in the SEC network commercial. For the other teams, they show players, stadiums, fans, cheerleaders, etc. but what do they show for SC? Spurrier.

Hats off to the OBC, he took that program as far as it can ever go: SEC east challengers once every five years, playing for the right to get bulldozed in Atlanta. What a legacy

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: This board focuses on them too much

Oct 30, 2013, 9:13 PM

I'm not sure I would reference "big butt-whupping" when the Tigers, just in the past 3 years, hold a few NCAA records for futility in very important games. However, you are certainly right about that Auburn massacre in 2010 or 2011? That game looked like a good high school team playing a pee wee league team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Serious Poll: When'll S. Carolina football finally regress?

Oct 29, 2013, 8:12 PM

Is there a school in the East I'd trade places with next year?

I honestly don't think there is.

UGA has the unenviable task of replacing not just their four year starter at QB but the all-time leader in total yards. The way it looks, they could be headed for a new DC and new defensive philosophy. Florida's offense scares no one and isn't getting better next year, they have serious problems on the OL and no QB. UT is going to replace their entire OL and DL, the same way we had to replace our entire LB corp. Mizzou is losing a ton of experience on defense and James Franklin graduates although Mauk looks impressive so far. No offense to Kentucky and Vandy, but when I think about wins, losses, and toss ups, they fall in the win column.

On the other hand, I look at our team and think that all the guys fans have complained about are getting so much valuable experience. Holloman and Moore have impressed me greatly with their play. I really think these two have the ability to be the Devonte Holloman and DJ Swearinger of this D in coming years. One is the quieter guy who goes about his business and puts himself in the right place all the time, the other has some fire in his blood and seems to love the environment. We have to replace Clowney which is gonna hurt, but we are young, deep, and talented on the interior DL.

Offensively, I'll be sad to see Connor go, but I feel confident in Dylan and I know coach will get everything he can out of Nosi and Mitch. All the skill guys will be back, and coach Elliott has some promising guys to choose from to replace Patrick.

Next year we ave the entire OL back except Patrick. We have Thompson, Nosovich and Mitch at QB. We have Davis, Wilds, Carson, Williams and probably #1 APB Scott at RB. We have Ellington, Byrd, Roland, Jones, Smith and Davidson at WR. We have Adams, Anderson & Zandi at TE. Pharoh Cooper looks like a star at several positions. Our inexperienced defense is getting better every week and they're all back except Clowney.

I know this sounds like sunshine pumping but I've always tried to be as objective as possible assessing our team. UGA and Mizzou are the two biggest threats next year, and we get the both at home. I really wouldn't trade places with anyone. Yes, a lot will depend on the performance of the new QB's, especially Dylan and the guys who replace #7, but our position is strong.

You guys need to worry about your team that's losing your QB, best WR, best RB, best defensive player, if Beasley goes early, 2 OL, 2 LB and a starting CB. Not to ention possibly Chad Morris.

Everyone talks about So Car going down when Spurrier retires.....

1) SOS has listed no time table for retirement and could easily be at So Car for another 5 to 7 years.

2) What makes anyone think that Holtz and SOS have not built the program (along with the SEC $$$) that the SC program is not on stable ground.

3) SC hired 2 legendary Hall of Fame National Championship winning coaches when the program was not near what it is today. What makes anyone think that a program that has been in the Top 10 in wins over the past 3 years, has SEC $$$ to pay and has good facilities, could not hire a quality coach.

4) Charlie Strong says HELLO.

Oct 31, 2013, 2:58 AM

I don't believe anyone is arguing that USC will continue to win 10 games every year. The same way it would be foolish to believe Clemson will, however there appears to be several threads predicting the end of USC's run but I haven't seen one predicting the end of Clemson's.

Re: Does this apply to Clemson as well?

Oct 31, 2013, 6:55 AM

Exactly. How many times have I seen it mentioned here that Dabo will go to Alabama when Saban leaves. I guess Bama will suck then too. And surely the Tigers will decline when Dabo leaves based on this theory? Who's the next great hire at Clemson or is Dabo the last coach to ever coach here. To presume the Gamecocks will suck when Spurrier retires is mere speculation and wishful thinking. The reality is, they have as much potential for greatness as Clemson does just no one here wants to admit it.

1) Georgia is better right now and kills them in recruiting

2) We don't know if they are better than Florida yet

3) Tennessee beat them this year and is a program that will not tolerate long term failure

From a program standpoint moving forward they are looking at sliding back to 4th place in the division and maybe more of a tie 4th if Missouri elevates their program. The division that is Dominated by the west. For all of their Success this year they dodged all of the good teams in the west.

4) We don't tolerate losses to USCe and we will do everything we can to make sure the series stays around 50% win lose.

When the reputation of the SEC takes a hit this bowl season it will be harder to maintain a program in the top 25 when you are stuck in the middle of any conference.

I think like most Gamecock fans, I'm dreading the day Spurrier retires. But I'm also looking forward to it. Spurrier is clearly on the back side of his coaching career and not near as sharp as he was in his prime. You can't convince me that there's not a young experienced coach out there who love to coach in the SEC at an established winner. And can do better than Spurrier at 68 years of age. We have gone after the top coaches in the country in every sport lately and got them to come to Columbia. The lure of the SEC, the SEC Network funds, excellent facilities and a very supportive AD and Administration will allow us to pick our next coach from the very best coaches in the country.

The quality of the line is irrelevant. Davis can do everything Lattimore could do and Davis has the breakaway speed that Lattimore never had.

Losing our qb and best playmaker sets us back a great deal

believe that it serves both CU and SC well when both have strong teams, as far as recruiting, SOS and national spotlight.

For too many years our state, albeit a small and poor one, has taken a back seat to others in the collegiate football scene, and look at the national focus this year with both teams highly ranked. Hopefully, at some point our annual rivalry game will draw greater focus.

That doesn't mean we have to fill the streets supporting the Gamecocks; rather, IF both schools maintain strong programs, it's perfectly fine with me for the likes of Georgia, Mississippi, Michigan and a few others to take back seats to our state.

I might add: whether older or younger, I've never heard as much "chatter" about the rivalry, as I've heard over the past few years, since Swinney's and Spurrier's arrivals on the scene. Call them what you want, but BOTH have been good for their respective programs.

When both our teams are doing well the entire state is

in a good mood and everyone is talking football. The higher both team are ranked and the more attention our game gets in best for all.

Want proof? Let me know how many people are talking about basketball in January.....

i have to disagree with this 1. our fine state just does not have enough elite d-1 talent to support 2 top tier football teams. therefore, might i suggest that they can have a fine equestrian team, and i'll be glad for them ( well, not really). but when it comes to football, i will have to wish another 0-12 upon them.

thanks, sgt. tiger
