Does Taisun Phommachanh have a chance

Jun 22, 2019, 1:49 PM

to beat out Brice for backup?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

of course he does as well as BB. They have a chance to beat

Jun 22, 2019, 1:53 PM

out TL for the starting job too. Everyone starts even

Based upon what I saw in the Spring Game, he has a chance

Jun 22, 2019, 2:02 PM

to be an excellent QB. He does everything you need a QB to do, plus he appears to have a playmaking ability with his legs that most good passing QBs lack. He looks fast and athletic.

I am looking forward to watching him play(may redshirt after appearing in 4 games) next year.

He will absolutely be given that chance, and if he's better

Jun 22, 2019, 2:13 PM

than CB he will be the back up - period. My opinion is that he has a very slim chance of actually doing that. Just think, 10-15 years ago, we'd all be foaming at the mouth in anticipation of seeing him taking over the starting job.

I gave you a TU, but...

Jun 22, 2019, 5:15 PM

why would you only give Taisun P a slim chance? In the few snaps TP got in the spring game, I thought he looked great... especially for a guy who just got here.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because Brice has looked great in real games and has two

Jun 22, 2019, 7:03 PM

years under his belt. He actually led us to a come-from-behind victory. The team obviously respects him and responds to his leadership. I agree 100% that Phommachanh was very impressive in the spring game and I think he has everything it takes to push for PT at some point; I just don't think it's enough YET to pass up CB.

Plus Dabo loves him

Jun 22, 2019, 9:17 PM

I'm sure he's high on TP, but Brice is a baller, and Dabo knows it. I think Chase transfers after this season, assuming he graduates, but for this year he's going to get a substantial amount of playing time.

plus phomachan is red shirting***

Re: Does Taisun Phommachanh have a chance

I think he’s plays in 3 games early next the season to get some game experience and lull potential future opponents into thinking he’s a running QB. He would still be eligible for a game in post season without losing his redshirt. Should he or Brice be forced into action, opposing DCs would have to prepare for both. He reminds me of a more athletic DW4 at the same stage in his career.

Re: Does Taisun Phommachanh have a chance

Jun 22, 2019, 4:11 PM

I don't know about lulling opponents into thinking that he is a running quarterback, but I do think that you are right about limited playing time in an effort to redshirt him. There is no regular season game that I foresee being close. I am sure that someone will play us well, but that's due to numbers and not a thought of a particular team doing it.

That being said, I think the coaches might be likely to choose the defenses that he could learn the most by facing or the games that might get out of hand early so that he gets more snaps, for his opportunities. I know the coaches don't want the players to overlook anyone, but I have to think they do a little planning with expectations of an outcome.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with one exception

Jun 22, 2019, 4:22 PM [ in reply to Re: Does Taisun Phommachanh have a chance ]

That I think the games he plays in are not necessarily early. Let him learn on scout team and 3rd team until he truly has an understanding and then put him in. 3x - sure, but in the 2nd half of the season. Would love to see us give him a whole quarter somewhere -- 2 to 3 drives.

Think he plays a lot. Chase will likely graduate and have options in the spring if he chooses, so you have to prepare him with full speed snaps. Nothing is a given.

As a true freshman, close to nil chance.

He will certainly be given the chance ... but Brice is a superb QB ....

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!

Re: Does Taisun Phommachanh have a chance

Jun 22, 2019, 5:26 PM

If TL stays healthy. It would make no sense to play TP in 4+ games of mop-up duty.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just based on what I saw in the Spring Game...

Jun 22, 2019, 5:09 PM

I would say yes, he definitely has a chance at beating out CB, who is an outstanding QB in his own right. Not sure why Batson saw any time in the spring game at all because only a disaster of epic proportion would allow him to see the field in a real game. On the other hand, Taisun looks like a young Deshaun. He already moves and throws as well as Zerrick Cooper or Hunter Johnson ever did here.

I think very highly of Chase Brice, and I pull for a guy like him to succeed... but he could get beat out for the backup role.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Absolutely. I believe he has a chance to be one of our best QBs ever.

Jun 22, 2019, 5:35 PM

His ceiling is higher than Brice’s is, but Brice is a very good QB in his own right and has been playing college football longer, so that will likely give him the edge this year. It certainly isn’t a forgone conclusion though.

I Really Liked What....

Jun 22, 2019, 6:30 PM

I saw in the Spring game from him. I think with Brandon's coaching he's going to be a big asset to the Tigers . He could be the back up next year but he's got to show off his arm to beat Chase. Chase is still tops in my book.

Re: I Really Liked What....

Jun 22, 2019, 6:52 PM

I agree - Buckhed..., Chase Brice is the best backup QB I have seen in 60 years following college football... And to think TP could be even better ... well ... that boggles the mind .. lol

Re: I Really Liked What....

Jun 23, 2019, 7:06 AM

I believe CB is a very good QB but y'all are getting carries away. Kyler Murray was a backup at one point, and was Cam and many other great qbs. CBs starts are okay but in no way great. He made some nice plays on the Cuse game and some clutch plays but ETN running the ball got us the victory.

Re: Does Taisun Phommachanh have a chance

Even with what he did against Syracuse, do some of you still think there is a legit chance Chase could lose the backup role?

Re: Does Taisun Phommachanh have a chance

Jun 22, 2019, 9:50 PM

CB would have to really play poorly in order for TP to beat him out. Don't see it, but anything is possible.
