Does Riley coming in help or hurt recruiting

1

Feb 4, 2023, 8:19 AM

in the short and long term?

My guess is that it all depends on the offensive improvement (if any, though it's hard to imagine we can't improve on #49); we see this up and coming year.

Good improvement and recruiting is great for the short ('24) and long term in my opinion. I bet we could possibly even flip a couple of good prospects if our NIL is up to snuff.

Thoughts?

I'd be shocked if it doesn't help

Now, one of the things Streeter did was bring in highly rated QB's. But with the offense off these last two years, we've seen how recruits viewed us, especially WR. With skill players, including RB this cycle, I think we see some marquee guys

The cupboard isn't bare.....

Feb 4, 2023, 8:26 AM

we have to think that our OL improves since we didn't lose anyone except for McFadden (and he was a yellow flag nightmare last year) and recruited well.

Ship and Mafa are studs. And we have at least one trusted true playmaker at WR in Williams.

Streeter probably just needed experience, but the biggest thing Riley brings in is fresh perspective, and I think we needed that the most.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

WR is the key I think as all other pieces appear to be in

place. Antonio is the lead guy coming into the year. That said, I want to see the healthy Randall that wowed everyone last spring. I want to see Beaux with a QB that can hit him on time. Would love to see a fully healthy Stellato. Excited about Cole Turner, and Noble Johnson.

I think we see someone become that outside, big play guy, and if so, look out!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We have to be careful about what we hear out of the Spring

2

Feb 4, 2023, 8:47 AM

because a lot of it never materializes. I hate to say it, but it is possibly just 'coach speak.'

I remember that offensive lineman, Pennington, was supposed to be a stud...did he even see the field last year? What were the coaches talking about if he couldn't even gain some PT on that line?

This is just one example.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pennington missed all of 2021 with an injury after

2

Feb 4, 2023, 9:10 AM

getting the attention that spring. Then he came in at 365 lbs over the summer in 2022. Randall was the guy in 2022, and he tore his ACL. Dabo can certainly lay the praise on some guys, but when he goes over the top, normally it's legit. He appears to have been right about Cole Turner, we'll see.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When ETN first arrived as an unknown, the coaches raved that

1

Feb 4, 2023, 9:48 AM

he was going to be something special after having only seen him perform in practice.

And, yep. They were right.

Same with Sammy Watkins. With Watkins, it was like 2 practices and they knew he would be special.

It would also help to get Jeff Scott back in the recruiting arena.

Yea, he can recruit just like he did at UCF...his mother should not be allowed to continue posting here...same one with coot fetish!

Re: I'd be shocked if it doesn't help

Maybe that was his problem. He should have been recruiting for USF! ;)

Re: Does Riley coming in help or hurt recruiting

3

Feb 4, 2023, 8:24 AM

I think it helps. His last name alone gives him a bump on Streeter in recruiting. Also I think he has big plans in his future not interested in being an oc at clemson forever. I think he will be a great recruiter for us. TCU going to natty also a plus for skill kids.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can sorta kinda see offensive recruits taking a "wait and

3

Feb 4, 2023, 8:34 AM

see" approach with Riley at Clemson. Do they bet on a "river card", the total unknown of how well he may do here, or do they see the general ineptitude of the offense in the last couple of years as some sort of indictment of the talent on hand?

I am not saying that EITHER of these views is right, only musing about what 18 year olds may be thinking about what they see. If, as EYE expect, the offense busts out in a big way next year, then the recruiting for the NEXT year will shift into a really high gear.

I agree and sort of suprised that Dabo's

3

lack of using the portal hasn't resonated more with high school recruits.

My only guess is that NIL is the only thing that really matters at this point.

I don't understand, "surprised that Dabo's

What does that mean?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I don't understand, "surprised that Dabo's

Feb 4, 2023, 11:54 AM

Means that one would think it would be a positive for recruits to know that we don’t have a practice of bringing in transfers and putting them ahead of current players.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, that's what I would assume as well.

Feb 4, 2023, 11:56 AM

But given PBT's propensity to search for negatives, most of which are imagined, I assumed he was saying that in a negative light. If meant to be positive then I agree.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Does Riley coming in help or hurt recruiting

3

Feb 4, 2023, 8:34 AM

I think he is a net positive in recruiting, especially at the skill positions, and that will only go up once recruits get a look at the offense he installs at Clemson and how we execute it.

Made no difference this class because they were already signed. Down the road. I don't think it makes much difference because kids look at schools they are attracted to for many reasons.

Re: Does Riley coming in help or hurt recruiting

Feb 4, 2023, 9:01 AM

With what we have brought in on the offensive side wide receiver wise in the last couple of years I can see nothing but the upside. Have a QB, 2 great backs but no stand out WR as of last year. Seen a few bright spots against UNC from a few I did not see much of in the regular season.

I’m really hoping Riley will see that Mafah is a bigger and better back between the tackles and get him more touches. I like Shipley but I believe would be better served in getting him touches in open space.

Agree about Mafa and Ship

3

Feb 4, 2023, 9:04 AM

Ship is explosive on the outside and in space, but he's not tough to tackle. Mafa on the other hand....

Shipley may be the best we ever had at finding the EZ and

3

Feb 4, 2023, 9:55 AM [ in reply to Agree about Mafa and Ship ]

at getting past the stick for first downs.

I’m not sure what you see in Shipley that says he’s not hard to tackle.

If anything, he seems sometimes to “tackle himself” in situations where he has a big opening and attempts to make a move.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's more it and I didn't articulate it well perhaps

Feb 4, 2023, 11:37 AM

goes down prematurely, let's say. He does have grit, no doubt but he isn't a tackle-buster like Mafa.

Re: Shipley may be the best we ever had at finding the EZ and

Feb 4, 2023, 11:53 AM [ in reply to Shipley may be the best we ever had at finding the EZ and ]

He has also been tackled a lot by one arm across the shin. I think he runs almost off balance and it is pretty easy to trip him up in the open field.

Re: Agree about Mafa and Ship

Feb 4, 2023, 9:57 AM [ in reply to Agree about Mafa and Ship ]

Ship not tough to tackle, are you kidding me?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Agree about Mafa and Ship

1

Feb 4, 2023, 10:17 AM

I believe he is meaning in comparing the 2 backs most would agree that one would rather tackle Ship before Mafah.

BUT good luck in tackling Ship in the open field. Love to see the guy in the slot or catch it more out of the backfield. He really struggled his freshman year with catching the football but hoping he is way past that now.

Short answer: "Help....Dramatically so."

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think he helps a ton.

1

Feb 4, 2023, 10:24 AM

We just aren’t seeing it yet this cycle, since it was already so late in the cycle when he was hired.

Skill position players want to play in a fun system. Riley’s system is fun. It’s innovative, it’s fast, it’s wide open, and it puts players in a position to make plays.

Our system the last few years has not been fun. It hasn’t been innovative, fast, or wide open. It hasn’t put players in a position to make plays very much. And I think recruits have seen that, and are excited about what Riley brings.
