He wouldn't take it. Everything seems to point to the fact that Burch wanted to go to a school where he could be the guy on the defensive line. South Carolina has an okay defensive line, but no real stars with Kinlaw leaving. At Clemson, Burch would have to compete with Xavier Thomas, Logan Rudolph, Tyler Davis, KJ Henry (who's looking better and better), Myles Murphy, Bryan Bresee, Demonte Capehart, and Tre Williams for playing time. Those are 5 5 Stars, a high ranked 4 Star, and Clemson's two best defensive linemen this year. He likes being a big fish in a small pond (though I'm not sure how good he actually is, after watching him have an okay season in one of the worst high school leagues in the country and then being really inconsistent in the All American Bowl).

He was repeatedly whipped by severely undersized OL against that team from PA they played on ESPN and disappeared for stretches against SCISA competition, so if they try to make him "the man" and throw him into the fire early he'll get absolutely mauled. Honestly, I think his inflated ranking would've been exposed here alongside Bresee, Cape, etc. and that may have played into his decision-making process.

I think that the reports that he wants to sign his LOI with his teammates are probably accurate. Burch will probably be very good regardless of what some Clemson fans believe. Some young men decide to go elsewhere, and that doesn't mean that they were paid or that there is a character issue and we never really wanted them. Some just have different priorities. We have had a very good recruiting year where we won more battles than we lost. We will be fine.

Burch may turn out to be great but why bother with all the drama. I thought the ultimate goal of any athlete in an sport was to play for championships so why go somewhere it isn't possible.
