Does Clemson use the 2 back set?

Jul 16, 2022, 10:43 AM

I really liked the 2 RB look they used towards the end of the year. I realize it was out of necessity due to WR issues. With 3 solid RB and Shipley's receiving ability out of the backfield I hope we see this utilized. Thoughts?

Hard to spread people out and let your athletes make

plays in space in a two back set. Plus, Will has a long way to go in the receiving game.

Hopefully, we are healthy and improved at WR and and don't need to resort to a two back set.

I thought so to, then I said to myself "self (because that's what I call myself) didn't we do pretty good in the 2 back set at the end of last year?" So I watched Cheez-it Bowl highlights. We did really well spreading people out and putting our athletes in space to make plays using it. Also we used it sparingly at the times that our coaches thought proper (I suppose). With 3 studs at RB, I would expect to see a 2 back set frequently.

My recollection of the Cheez-It was that we scored 13 points

on offense and gained about 300 yards of total offense and ran the ball 40 times to only gain 128 yards. Shipley ran the ball 18 times for a grand total of 61 yards. If not for the pick 6, we may very well have lost that game to a team without their NFL running back who sat out the game after rushing for over 3,000 yards and 40 TDs in his previous two years.

If we are going to reach the playoffs and win the natty, we need to spread people out more, throw the ball down the field more and create more big plays.

Never understood what he not….we’ve had the talent to do it. Many wrinkles can come out of two back sets.

Even if you just run it 25% of the time. Use the running backs as receivers to spread the field.

Big issue Shipley needs to clean up and I notice him working on it in pre game is catching the pass in the flats on the run. Was not very consistent. Probably did not get thrown to a lot in high school. Split backs is a great set in my opinion and yes we need to get the TE involved in the offense. Dabo called me the other evening and we discussed this at length. He says to expect better QB and TE play this season.

Hopefully improved play from the TEs will be the 2nd back.

I thought the TEs and RBs were a big part of the offense last year.

Something around 80 catches. Pretty sure TEs caught more passes than any season since Jordan Leggett.

Note we had very minimal TE participation in our 2018 natty. 2020 was the most productive passing game in Clemson history, and we again had relatively low TE production.

We have a few outstanding TEs and continue to recruit solid players there. I think Streeter wants a little more physical brand of offense with two back sets and TES, etc., but the bottom line is we must block more physically and rely more on power instead of finesse. As long as we get back to a more customary completion % and be able togrt tough yards, we will win the ACC and likely make the CFP. Easy to say.. time to see it.

Most seem to want more spread option. I like that offense as well.... when it works with the available talent.

What I would like to see us develop is a 3-TE offense in addition to the spread. With that offense, we could really utilize the RB talent by running power to the strong side and after a few gains and TE pass completions off of the chip blocks, come back with running counter to the weak side.

The 3-TE offense can be a smash-mouth power run game that has the ability to wear out the front 7 by running power and then counter. Once the back 7 cheats into the box, the long game opens up.

I have this vision of counter left off of a strong right 3-TE set, weak side guard pulling right, letting the defender through to meet a trap block square in his face by one of the TEs pulling the opposite way followed by a 2nd TE pulling into the hole, with the 3rd TE slipping across the line and into the LB trying to fill the gap. All manner of He!! would be breaking loose at the point of attack.

Please - I'd like to see it at least once before I die!
