Do you think the PAW design really helped distinquish CU

May 5, 2014, 6:36 PM

from other Tiger-named College Teams? If you remember Auburn copied it on one side of their football helmet with AU on other..and then dropped it.

Now, MO has a fairly neat Tiger Face design (bad tail ending though imo).

What say You?!

the Paw is iconic and was a genius move by whoever

May 5, 2014, 6:51 PM

thought of it. It's right up there in terms of most recognizable college logos(non-letter) with the Longhorn

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hate to admit it

May 5, 2014, 6:53 PM

But Clemson def has the best logo compared to the other Tiger teams. LSUs everything is horrendous.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LSU has an awful licensing program

May 5, 2014, 6:58 PM

they have switched from goofy looking tigers to dull block letter LSU. At least Auburn has the intertwined AU which isn't anything amazing looking but it is established. LSU's is just terrible.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Penn State's is pretty awful too. They have the lion head

May 5, 2014, 7:13 PM

or the chipmunk, as I like to call it. That's there more recognizable symbol, IMO. But for some reason they also use/sell
a 4-toed paw
a 5-toed paw (they switched to 5 after playing us in a bowl game because they didn't want there to be any confusion)
a more realistic lion head (like their lion shrine statue) and a block S (which I really like and prefer)

and a bunch of other stuff.

I just wish they'd pick something and go with it.

that's a common mistake by schools

May 5, 2014, 7:18 PM

too much stuff. Every department has their own logo or thing they want to do. I am at UIW now and before we instituted a licensing program it was a disaster with logos everywhere and inconsistencies abounding. Now we have a set logo and we hold everyone to it strictly. A rogue person cannot make shirts or stuff without getting the logo approved and being sent the official file with the artwork. It has to match all the criteria and follow the correct watermarks and clear zones.

Clemson's is one of the top in the country.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep. I agree. It became apparent when I came here

May 5, 2014, 7:27 PM

I couldn't believe how many 'identities" there were.

The coots shouldn't have to ever worry about trade marking that stupid looking chicken, b/c nobody else would ever want it on anything affiliated with sports.

and its vital to get your brand recognizable. Some schools have it historically while others are fighting to get recognized. The Paw has it all in terms of history, aesthetics, uniqueness and coolness. There are others too but some of the more iconic ones in the NCAA are letters and a bit dull really.

Tiger, such as used in CUatthefinishline's thingy.

But the moment I saw the Paw, I thought it to be a brilliant stroke and readily adapted to it.

Perhaps, one of the greatest moments occurred some years ago just prior to a CU/SC game here in Columbia, when I saw Tiger Paws painted along I-26 leading into Columbia. They were all over the local news, in the paper, on the airwaves and the talk of the town. The geniuses that pulled that off deserved gold medals!

Now, most football enthusiasts across the nation know which team they represent, and I remain d@mn proud of them.

Clemson was pretty cutting edge when it came to that

an iconic logo. Miami did the same with the U and Texas with the longhorn. Some others had things too but it wasn't consistent branding.

Any conversation about iconic college football symbols must

May 5, 2014, 7:16 PM

include the following (not necessarily in order of significance):
1) Notre Dame's fighting leprechaun
2) "Beevo" @ Texas
3) Boomer Sooner Schooner @ Okla
4) Chief Nocahoma on his horse @FlaSt
5) So. Cal's Trojan on a real stud
6) Colorado's buffalo burger
7) Florida's gator
and without question....Clemson's Legendary Tiger Paw.

there are others who are quite recognizable--GaTech's Ramblin' Wreck, Maryland's turtle, and I'd have included Auburn's soaring eagle in the top list if that was the only mascot they had, Nebraska's joeBob the Husker, etal. But those top few schools (and I've probably omitted someone) are instantly identifiable.

The Paw is extremely iconic and has been since the late John Antonio created it. It helped us become a brand because at the time we were the third college team to strike a deal and federal trademark, behind Alabama and Ole Miss. Logos and such traditions have for years fueled brand sales and created unique identities.

The Tiger nickname actually derived from Princeton as they won the title the year prior our establishment. The actual Paw came from a template provided from a museum in Chicago. If I remember correctly, the cast was from a Tiger located at the Zoo in St. Louis. The iconic and slight streak at the base of the Paw was no accident either, as it was a scar on the animals foot.

Regardless of school brand revenue the Clemson Paw remains the premiere logo in all of collegiate athletics imho. Just think of how many of us viewing this are wearing a Paw shirt. I know I am.

Re: Do you think the PAW design really helped distinquish CU

May 6, 2014, 8:34 AM

Dotting the "I" at Ohio State is recognizable and different IMO.

I even like the dang motorcycle that Wake uses. It's fairly modern as far as anything like this goes, but it's different and I like it.

USUC's "2001" entrance seems to get more dated every passing year. :) Just checking to see if you're reading this.
