Do you think that we are entering

Jan 12, 2022, 10:32 AM

A new era of college sports where great coaching MAY win out over great recruiting classes? Many schools, and I consider Clemson to be one of them, will not be able to match the efforts of those who are able to take full advantage of the NIL ruling. The truly great players, on which great teams are built, will all flock to the schools with the best offer and the remaining teams will be forced to develop their recruits to compete. I have confidence that our guy can do that.
But what a challenge it will be.

I think so. McFadden was a three star OL recruit and now is considered one of the better OT in the NCAA. Most rosters are made up of three star recruits. Having too many 5 star players causes locker room issues because you can't play everyone. Sign as many four stars as you can and get the occasional 5 stars and then fill in with good 3 stars and coach them up you can win with coaching. Then see who you can get from the transfer portal. Just is harder and a slower process but I think it can be done.

I agree with you and would add that this is exactly what Dabo has been doing for several years. It will likely still be vital to get that”big time” quarterback and coach up the other guys to compete with the teams who load up on the top fifty recruits. At this the Tigers have an edge because of the coaching staff. These new hires/promotions will have to work for our team to stay in the mix. I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t pay off sooner than later. 2022 can, and likely will be, a super season for the Clemson Tigers. I’m ready and so are you.

When we beat Alabama for the Championship in 2016/2017, didn’t we average something like #12 recruiting ranking average? Coaches like Saban and Kirby have to have a huge overwhelming advantage in talent in order to win.

I think things will continue to be about the same. The portal may make some teams without much talent better. So maybe a little more parity.

You beat me to it.

I think that while NIL may give some colleges an advantage, but the portal will tend to spread talent around. Would a kid rather get paid a lot to ride the pine at A and M or get paid a little less and actually play? Given that the real money is in the NFL, some will opt to play.

Not unless you’re starting after this past Monday night. Because Smart < Saban.

Yes and no. We are entering a new era of college football. However, the ability of great coaches to overcome better talent on other teams is a questionable hypothesis.

Clemson's national championship in 2016 can be 80% attributed to DW4's guts, skills and perseverance vs. a better Bama team. Clemson's championship in 2018 was the result of being the best team on the field with CW42 and Power Rangers, IS11, and great WR's -- but do not discount the importance of freshman TL16, the top QB in the country.

Dabo and Clemson will have to adapt. Like you, I have confidence in "our guy", but we do not know right now how much the deck will be stacked in favor of big spenders and what guidelines/regs/boundaries will be put in place and what will be enforced. Right now it looks like the 1982 SMU team was 40 years ahead of its time.

I'm afraid that you got it figured out SocMan2®.

Smart coaching can get you a long ways, but super duper talent (if it can be kept from leaving in the portal ... and if it can purchased via the portal) which is attracted to a program via NIL $$$$ ... can overcome great coaching and exceptional personnel evaluations of 'under-recognized' HS talent.

Not just SMU in 1982, but also U of Miami in 2001 (with coaching wizard Coker), and even with 2019 LSU team (with another all-time coaching genius Orgeron).

If a college team can purchase enough super stars, and then have no shame in dumping the under-performers and replacing them with NIL-purchased portal guys, then the entire equation is shifted towards acquisition of talent at any price and away from smart recruiting and excellent coaching.

Truly a sad state of affairs for college football (and for men's college basketball)

Dabo will be the first to tell anyone who will listen that when our recruiting took off, so did our results. No matter how good you think you are as a coach, you are only as good as the talent you put on the field. I think NIL and the portal are the two biggest threats to our program right now and how we choose to address those issues will determine how successful we continue to be.

Not saying recruiting is greater than coaching but you have to have both to be elite and successful at the highest level.
After 4 straight top 20 recruiting classes coach TB still couldn’t get it done. Same can be said with UGA and Mark Richt he had multiple top recruiting classes but could never get it done. Coaching is just as important.

I get your point but truthfully, a top 20 class doesn't get you to the playoff. Bowden averaged around the 15th best class in those years you quoted which means you are still getting out-recruited by 14 of the best teams in the country. Since 2011, Dabo has had 7 Top 10 recruiting classes which makes a big difference. To have a chance to win a National Championship you have to be among the 4 best teams in the country so your recruiting needs to be consistently in the Top 10 to have that kind of talent.

Our recruiting improved but we still were not pulling in talent like bama, Ohio st, and UGA. I think we got a little ahead of ourselves in 2020 and saw the rewards of two championships. Dabo will go back to what got him their. Top 10 classes with a great QB and clemson culture.

I hear that Smokin Pig is heavily investing in NIL. No telling what a huge impact a 3-day/week eatery will have on recruiting.

Here's what I think: let this unholy NIL business run

Jan 12, 2022, 4:40 PM

rampant, and soon enough Congress will get involved...especially from those members who are alumni of the "also-rans."

And this Son of Satan, called the new transfer portal, will lead to a major revolt unless the NCAA comes to its senses, realizing the diabolical, misbegotten creature they created.

No. Talent will always win out.

4 and 5 stars across the board matters. Yes, while a great coach ( like Dabo) motivates, unifies and lights fires under talented guys, pure talented guys across the board is what will win you championships. PERIOD!
