Good article. Or at least I thought it was. Kinda depressing though. Everyone has their own opinion but no one deserves to have been treated like he was no matter what he did. We as a university should have taken the high road.

Like Dabo always does. One just needs to look at the Pearman and Caldwell situation. Now they're both assets to our program instead of liabilities. Win/win. I, for one am glad DRad is gone. Just hope Neff is his own man and not just a DRad puppet.

Agreed! Drad always looked like he was trying to pass something painful. Did a lot of great things and a lot of dumb ones, just like we all do.

It would have been great to have allowed Jack to step down the next season, but Jack had no intentions of stepping down or retiring. Jack was convinced that he still had the energy that had in his 30's-40's, and maybe he did, I don't know. But your brain do lose it's sharpness the older we get, and Jack was making decisions that showed signs of mental fatigue, and with college level sports decisions has to be made in an instant. IMO, and I'm making my assumptions as being a man of 69, D-1 college sports is mostly for people 60 and under. In my personal experience, I've lost a lot of sharpness probably after 62-63, and I say that bc I have noticed a lot more mind drifting since around that age....

Firing a Legendary Coach, is usually

Mar 3, 2022, 11:05 PM

a dumazz, stupid, egotistical, bush league move. This one certainly was and we have pretty much sucked since.

I too am glad is gone and THIS and the Brownell, as well as doing away with certain sports. I hope it is happy in Miami, but I don't think Miami will be too happy with DRad for long.

Sorta sad. Wanting to leave on your own terms is sweet and all, but come on, you need to realize that sits time to go also. And it’s a bummer he isn’t part of the university and baseball still, but that’s a two way street as well, be approachable and dump the sour grapes routine. It’s great he thought the program was ready to reap the rewards of good recruiting and make a run, but let’s not rewrite history and act like there wasn’t underachieving and staleness in the program. Anew AD went in a different direction, salavie. If the pic was coach Brownell would sentiment be the same?

Seth Beer, Cal Raleigh, Jackson Kowar

Mar 4, 2022, 8:59 AM

All three went in the first round of the 2018 MLB draft and all three were in Leggett’s last recruit class. Raleigh flipped to FSU and Kowar flipped to Florida. So, yeah we were poised to make a run with the recruits he was bringing in. In the 3 years we woulda had those other two guys with Beer we won 42, 44, and 47 games; so if and buts, but if we had 2 more first rounders on those teams who knows what we coulda accomplished.

I like Leggett but he won bc of his assistants

Mar 4, 2022, 5:46 AM

After they left, it went downhill and got worse every year almost.

Do you think assistants fall out of the sky? Who hired them?

Mar 4, 2022, 9:53 AM

Who coached third base?
Who made personnel decisions?
Who was the heart and soul of the program?

Anyone who knows ANYTHING about our program back then knows he was the machine that made it all go.

All those former assistants still call him and ask him for advice.

Leggett is just butt hurt and told a story to make him look better. He has been classless by hanging around the program. Look at Danny Ford. Also fired but was classy enough to give the next coach the respect of space.

Re: Leggett article

Mar 4, 2022, 8:32 AM

Exactly! This is what I have been saying for the last few years! Jack is at every home game, sitting right next to the dugout. Like he is trying to intermediate Monte for no reason. It told me all I needed to know about Jack when he refused to retire or resign. When you play hard you fall hard. End of story. So glad Jack is gone and proud of what Monte has put together. Expectations are high but I didn't see a soul on here calling for Dabo's job after this past season. I'm just saying. Monte Lee is a good baseball coach and we are lucky to have him. Jack needs to move on and quit being a crybaby loser.

Two guys who don’t get it

Mar 4, 2022, 9:23 AM

Leggett was there to watch his guys play it had zero to do with Lee. He was the coach at Clemson for 22 years and built relationships with every player on the team and their families. Clemson baseball is like a traveling carnival with family members and fans and he was an integral part of that. He was there because of the players he cared about period. It’s not a surprise that he’s been present a lot less since the guys he recruited and coached have moved on.
Also with respect to Ford he doesn’t come around cause he don’t geeve a sheet about watching football. Ford would rather spend all day on a tractor than any other activity, so comparing him to leggett is just ridiculous.

Completely agree with you Geech. As you can clearly tell in the article, Jack was heart broken and it still stings. I'd love to see his #7 retired up there with Khalil and Coach Wilhelm. He deserves to be honored for contribution to the program. Its a shame he didn't have the opportunity to have a Mike Martin-type career and be at the helm for 40 years.

ABSOLUTELY, Jack Leggett should have something at the Baseball facilities, and at the field that honors all that Jack done/gave to Clemson University, and IMO, it's past time!!!

That crew that use to travel to every baseball game, and they had seats right behind the home plate ump, and God forbid if he wasn't giving a Clemson pitcher the same strike zone as the visiting team pitchers got!!! They could heckle an ump as well as anyone at other venues, and they done it with class 80% of the time. I use to love watching them when an ump was bias towards a Clemson batter, pitcher, base runner, or play at the bags or plate. I wonder if that crew is still going to the games, it's been a while since I've been to any game, in any sport with the degenerative condition my back has gotten to, but I don't miss anything that comes on the TV, with YouTube TV....

In my lifetime, the most disappointing thing Clemson has

Mar 4, 2022, 9:47 AM

done was how we fired Jack Leggett. He was a quintessential Clemson man and one of the most successful coaches in the history of our athletic program. I felt that firing him would do more harm to our program than good. Whether people inside the program want to admit it or not, it is a stain on our program in the college baseball world.

That said, I don't think about that at all when I support our current team. I support them, and loudly cheer for them, 100%. I hope this is the year we can finally get back to where we were.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think there is any "good" way to fire someone. I had

Mar 4, 2022, 10:55 AM

to do it a few times over the years, and it never felt good. In Jack Leggett's case, if he was "blindsided" by the firing, then he must have been purely myopic. He made it sound in the article like he deserved a lifetime tenure, and that is just not what happens in a business where your performance is judged on wins and losses. Even coaches of the stature of Bobby Bowden get relieved of their duties when on field performance fails to live up to past expectations.

Now, in Leggett's case, had he won the ultimate prize, once or more than once, his exit from Clemson may have been different. Butt, that is a question that will never be answered. He certainly does nothing to further endear himself to Clemson, hovering around the program essentially uninvited.

I feel some empathy for Monte Lee in this situation. He obviously had nothing to do with Leggett's firing, and yet, some try to make him the bad guy in the situation.

If Jack Leggett truly loves Clemson as much as he claims to, then he should realize that the best thing he can do for Clemson right now is make himself scarce. At some point in the future, his jersey should be retired and his name should go on the walls of DKS. If that is truly what he wants, he himself is delaying it by dredging up past history in new newspaper articles where he tries to paint Clemson in an unfavorable light.

Re: I don't think there is any "good" way to fire someone. I had

Mar 4, 2022, 12:32 PM

There isn't a good way to fire someone, but that forgets Leggett only had one year on his contract. Letting a contract expire isn't the same as firing someone. Leggett understood what needed to be done to get renewed after the next season. That was win big and, at least, advance to a SR with a strong showing. He had his best incoming class in years (one that lost a couple of big players when he was fired) and was set to open his new facility. According to multiple sources, after his last meeting with DRad, Leggett believed (despite being strongarmed to fire his staff - which would have forced him to find replacements for equal pay who would be aware that it might only be a one-year gig) that he would still be coaching. DRad changed his mind and fired him after their last meeting. We had our worst season since 1950 last year. Things literally couldn't have been worse had we kept him one more year. If things weren't going well by the midpoint of the season it would have become a farewell tour. Unless he had a clone of a young Auggie Garrido ready to take the job there was no sense in how things were handled.

Re: Leggett article

Mar 4, 2022, 9:54 AM

You can look at it several ways. If Clemson had won a National Championship after he was fired nobody would be complaining about how it was handled. The AD made a decision and it hasn't paid off. The situation was a tough one to handle.

Mar 4, 2022, 11:24 AM

Clemsonalum87 must have not got jacks camp
Mvp award or son. Yes I think it was time for him to be let go but maybe in different way. We didn’t hear anything about it. D rad doesn’t or didn’t care anyway about baseball. I hope for monte success but leash needs to be shorter here at clemson for baseball especially. This wouldn’t fly at other places even sc I bet Kingston soon gone. Both are rich programs and once a lot of people were proud of. Now struggling getting people to games. We got called by iptay if we had any friends that wanna buy season tickets. Got called again right after first few games and they said they lowered season tickets. Anyway back to leggett. Yes he was a good coach and people say he isn’t. Idk what game you watched. He is amongst the bests. Lucky to have him. Wish they would honor him and other previous guys. Isn’t this suppose to be family? Seems like we’re keeping some out. Leggett, Khalil Greene I can name some others that should be recognized more or be reached out to. So many greats through this program and others. I also think some of that falls on marketing department and alumni groups and all involved.

I remember people were chomping at the but not long ago to hurry and get b-ball over so baseball. Well facilities are bleak in some capacity and tickets and other small details I see are too. I’m hopeful gets turned around quick but I also pay attention to small things many don’t think about or know that goes on. I coach baseball still in the area. I played all the way until college. I worked for a d1 baseball program. Not bragging just stating a lot goes into things and the details matter.

Re: Leggett article

Mar 4, 2022, 12:23 PM [ in reply to Re: Leggett article ]

As a Clemson fan that knows a little about past, then you know that no new coaching hires has any championship stamped by their name when they are hired. Not even with Dabo, Dabo was the cheapest fix for the moment that had the drive to be a championship HC. Dabo was the luck of the draw hire that I have been so thankful for from the day he was named Clemson's FB HC.

When Dabo was named the interim HC, I only knew that he was our WR coach that had been doing a pretty good job. But I feel that I knew everything that had been printed about Dabo when he was named the HC, and on that day I felt that with enough time, Dabo would do a lot of good things for Clemson FB, but I also felt that Dabo was on a very short leash, and that a sign of things getting better would have to start happening in his first 3 years, or he would be gone, and probably Terry Don with him.

Finishing his 1st season in 2009 with 9 wins, I felt really good about that. Then the 2010 season with just 6 wins, I held my breath until after that recruiting class had been signed, I knew he would be the HC in 2011, we won 10 games beating 4 of 6 ranked teams, but got crushed by WV 70-33, that was very painful for all of Tiger nation, and his head was being called for by the ones that absolutely hated Dabo as HC, but Dabo fired Steele and hire BV, and that showed he would fire a coached that made him look that bad, and that's when I felt that our Tigers would win a NC under Dabo, and that worried me bc, I though if he won a NC as fast as I thought he would at Clemson, I felt that he would be hire away bc he would have done what nobody had done since Danny Ford, and he would want to go somewhere that would be much easier to recruit the best of the best players.

I honestly back then hoped that Dabo would keep us at 9-10 wins a season at least until he loved Clemson as much as Tiger Nation loved Clemson, and I think that happened before 2015, when we went 14-1, and lost to Bama in the NC game. But then we went 14-1 in 2016, and beat Bama winning the NC with a TD to Renfrow in the end zone!!! Now we have won two NCG's under Dabo, and YES I believe we will win another before the NIL totally screws things up for Clemson FB....

Jack could get the studs to play at Clemson, the quality of the players were just better than now .
This program is paying the price for what they did to jack . CML is a good baseball coach but not at this level . CofC was a perfect fit for him and that’s where he will land after this season at a mid major .
