With 10 minutes left in game and we

Dec 6, 2015, 1:13 AM

Started that stupid BS of taking offensive plays away and going vanilla as hell is disappointing. Playing NOT to lose rather than to win. I know Scott dropped a pass but the first 2 plays were so stagnant. Keep going for the throat, break their spirit and keep the momentum...
Anyway, 13-0 baby!! Feel petty complaining but just gotta say it lol. #1 in playoff ranking should be secured.

agree and stop with the obvious passes...keep

running the ball down their throats...

Do you remember the previous two offensive series before

Dec 6, 2015, 1:27 AM

the 3 and out?? We ran nearly the exact same vanilla offense on our two previous scoring drives. In fact on the previous two TD drives combines, the only play that was not a run was the sideline TD pass to Artavis Scott. Besides that pass, we were exclusively running Gallman off-tackle and read option with Deshaun mixed in with a couple of other runs.

This will probably be a surprise to you (it certainly was to me), but following our first scoring drive of the second half where Gallman scored to put us up 28-16, we actually on threw the ball 3 times for the entire rest of the game. That's over 23 minutes of game time with almost exclusively running the ball. Of those three passes, one was the aforementioned TD pass to Artavis, another was the phantom interception that clearly hit the ground and moved, and the third was the bubble screen where Deshaun threw the ball at their feet because the UNC defenders had read and diagnosed the play.

That type of playcalling seems insanely conservative when discussing it on here, but the important thing to consider is that no one said a word about it at all on the two TD drives when it was working great and also running the clock down.

Generally speaking I'm all for keeping the pedal to the metal until we are up by 4 scores or midway through the 4th quarter, but it's also important to take what the defense gives you especially if the simple plays are working at the time. UNC was determined to play a lot of cover 2 with both safeties deep in order to prevent the long ball. Because of that strategy, Gallman was able to rush for well over 150 yards in the second half. It was more of a fluke that the drive stalled on those plays when the Tarholes stopped them than anything else considering that we were running the ball nearly as will during that period of the game.

Very true cornstock, but you have to change

Dec 6, 2015, 1:32 AM

It up... They had box loaded and we're ready for us to try the old " milk the clock " strategy we employ. Coaches realize when teams adapt, you have to adapt as well. I do realize we ran for 300 yards, yet they stopped us because we slowed down the pace, not just b/c we ran the ball. You follow me and my thought, it's as much pace as anything that keeps D on its HEELS, pun intended lol

I don't remember their defensive alignment at the time

Dec 6, 2015, 1:57 AM

but if they had adjusted from their cover 2 with deep safeties to bringing at least one of them back up in the box for run support then you're exactly right. That could have been an ideal time to run two deep routes and see what side the lone safety cheated to and throw opposite to the single coverage.

If we had ran Cain and Scott just on two simple fly routes on 2nd down possibly even after a playaction or just simple pump fake to further draw the free safety, I like our chances with either of them in single coverage.

I guess it's possible that with the way Gallman had been running on the previous two series that Tony Elliot got a bit greedy and as a result he ended up getting outcoached by Gene Chizik on that series.

BTW, I appreciate you replying with a thoughtful and intelligent response as opposed to just disagreeing without any explanation. Thanks.

No... offense and offensive playcalling was not the issue at

Dec 6, 2015, 1:30 AM

all. The defense giving up 2 min TD drives the entire 4th quarter was the issue, and it's been an issue in 3-4 games this year, not just this one. This defense, for whatever reason, cannot close a team out in the 4th quarter.

They closed out Florida State.

They're tired, we're going to be just fine on the 31st.

Dec 6, 2015, 1:36 AM

the week off will be huge!!! Rest up team, get healthy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think that's due to a couple of factors

Dec 6, 2015, 2:15 AM [ in reply to No... offense and offensive playcalling was not the issue at ]

First, the fact that we've now played 10 consecutive weeks without a break has undoubtedly began to take it's toll. But more important than the lack of a bye week is the lack of quality depth at a few key defensive positions.

For as talented as our defensive guys were last year, the thing that made them absolutely deadly was the ability to rotate regularly. There were several positions, especially along the defensive line, where one could accurately list several guys from the two-deep as co-starters. Having Beasley and Lawson alternating at the right defensive end position has to be as formidable of a duo as any starter and backup anywhere in the country last year. Stephone Anthony and Ben Boulware complemented each other greatly despite their very different playing styles. Having Grady Jarrett, Carlos Watkins, Josh Watson, and DJ Reader to play the 3 technique DT and the 1 technique was an incredibly gifted group. Corey Crawford and Tavares Barnes as well.

The list goes on in regards to last year. I think that having a month to recover will enable our guys to overcome the need to have to be subbed as often at least for the playoffs. Come next year we should have built a bit more depth and with the defensive line guys having a year to get bigger and stronger, our depth will again be a major assett.

If we can build some quality depth at LB, we should be able to take the step forward from a good defense like this year back to an elite defense like last year. I really hate that BJ Goodson is a senior though. Now that he's finally getting his opportunity and has been getting better each week, his eligibility will be coming to an end.

10 weeks consecutive is a major grind, giving our Tigers credit for battling. They were worn down at the end but gave the 60 minutes needed to get the win. Depth has been concern all year, but this time off will be great. Bring on whoever, I kind of want Oklahoma, Alabama, and MSU!! Could we arrange that lol
