Do you like your boss?

Mar 4, 2022, 7:36 AM

I report directly to three people.

One of my bosses is very laid back. Don't care what you do as long as you show up and do your job. I rarely see him.

The other boss, I see all the time. He's also like the boss above. Except me and him are good friends. We share a lot in common. Not to mention he sends me tik toks while I'm working, then call me asking if I saw the tik toks he sent. Um, no... I'm working.

Then theirs the boss for the other part of my job. We use to be friends. Well acquittances really. Mutual respect. That is gone. After a few years working together, he can't stand me and I can't stand him. A lot of it, admittedly, stems from us being complete opposites. We don't agree on anything or live our lives anything the same. No similarities except he's an ### hole and I'm an ### hole. That's the only thing we have in common.

Like Stanley from the office said though: we don't have to like each other, we just have to work together.

So jounge. Do you like your boss? Is getting along with your boss a high priority for you?

Yes, yes, maybe

Primary job boss is a friend- I’m going to his house for supper tonight

Secondary job boss lobbied to keep me on payroll when the initial contract ran out and as long as I file the state reports on time I never hear from him

Tertiary job boss is new so not sure. I can’t get him to commit to my fall schedule and I consistently got better evals than him before he was promoted so I think he’s pushing me out. I know he doesn’t like having another man in the department even part time so maybe I need to start wearing skirts?

I like my boss. He's a good guy, works hard and is a real family man. He never lets you see that he is upset or mad. The only way you can tell if he is upset is he normally is joking around a lot. If he is not telling jokes, then you know he is pissed about something. As long as you work hard and get your work done, he is great about letting leave early on some Fridays or take long lunches to run errands. Basically, you take care of him, he will take care of you.

Mar 4, 2022, 8:21 AM

one of the sharpest dudes in this industry.

my boss before him was the same way, had a lot of respect for him too, he was just an insane workaholic and I noped out of there as I didn't want to work saturdays and sundays as a 55 year old VP.

my resentment towards higher ups usually comes from the SVP and executive level. typically a bunch of B-school ####### tools who don't know #### but wrap it up great language like this guy is a Harvard Business School graduate with extensive global experience driving revenue with cross-functional teams ... drives me insane

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Like my bosses, hate the backwards culture of my company

Mar 4, 2022, 8:23 AM

as a whole. HR runs the place and has their hands in everything. Just sign my paychecks and give your little speeches at the company outings and shut the #### up and let the professionals do their jobs. I've found that HR departments typically think that because they can read/understand every job description that they're somehow uniquely qualified to weigh in on everything despite no knowledge or expertise in the areas where they meddle.

They ask us to be "collaborative", meaning that if you get a stupid request from someone who has some tenure os is an asskisser and say no, you're being "difficult".

It's one of those companies where literally the ONLY reason anyone works there is because of the salary and 401k match. There is nothing else redeeming about the place.

however he hates his job due to his boss, but only has like 3 years left to work……so he doesn’t give an effffffff about anything, so it’s hard sometimes to get support for big issues.

Absolutely. We get along really well, work together really

Mar 4, 2022, 8:32 AM

well, and when the company shit me on a raise this year, he stepped in and made it right.

His boss, in the Raleigh office, is great too. Farther up the food chain, in DC, seems to be a good guy, but he is running two big regions and I have only really talked to him 2-3 times.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like my boss as a person. Not as a manager

Mar 4, 2022, 8:33 AM

He grew up very poor in the mountains, went to NC State, worked his way to the top and is fairly well recognized within my field within the state. He was a much better boss when his day to day included design work and hanging out with all of us. Once he became "the guy" with his own office... he kind of turned into a monk and very rarely comes out of his office and he is extremely out of touch with the day to day. I get that is easy to do in a large, corporate environment, but not in a 12 person office.

He also seems to forget where he came from. He is Mr. Money Bags now and thinks that his life advice is the only life advice that anyone should take. He uses lessons learned when he graduated from State in 1996 and tries to overlay his dated opinions into todays environment. His story of, "I bought a modest home with my wife right after we got married then tore it down and completely rebuilt. I don't understand why more folks aren't doing that instead of buying expensive homes." Great concept. Great idea. But the "modest home" that he bought right after college was affordable and he rebuilt it in a time where there wasn't lumber shortages, inflation, material prices through the roof, contractor backlogs. The intent is good... he just isn't who I want my life advice from.

He compensates well, gives us bonuses, profit sharing, and is super flexible (unless its to ask about working from home)... he just is missing the IT factor.

Like anything else there are some redeeming qualities

Mar 4, 2022, 8:39 AM

with the boss who have mutual distaste for.

He got me out of a terrible work situation. He does a great job on certain parts of his job but his ego makes him think he's the best thing out there even though the other parts of his job he is terrible at. He is also really good about being flexible with people with families.

But he is a massive ####### ### hole with an ego that would rival most world leaders.

Mar 4, 2022, 9:50 AM

I have eight different bosses right now.

I beg your pardon?

Eight bosses.

Eight?

Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled; that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mar 4, 2022, 11:44 AM

But they moved my dept and 2 peers depts back under corporate a few months ago, and now I haven't spoken to the new boss for more than 20 minutes total since then. I don't even know him.

My old boss turned in his resignation yesterday, and that sucks. I've worked with him for about 9 years in different capacities. Super sharp guy, who looks out for his folks.

I need to get out of here this year.
