Dec 2, 2021, 9:22 AM [ in reply to metal detectors would probably work*** ]

First, they are extremely expensive and you'd have to really boost school funding to get them in there. Resource officers are far more effective.

Second, anyone who wants to shoot up a school isn't going through a metal detector first.

"Brazil has had five school shootings since 2001, resulting in a total of 30 deaths"

"Canada has had a total of 19 school shootings between 1884 and 2016."

Re: "There's nothing we can do about school shootings"

Dec 2, 2021, 8:45 AM

It's a sad but true statement. There are more people and more guns than when I finished high school in the 70's.There were still more than 200 million Americans and millions of readily available guns.Guns were even easier to acquire then. I along with several other classmates kept shotguns in our vehicles to go hunting after school let out. The coaches and teachers knew this. Many males carried a pocket knife as a tool rather than a weapon.

Yet I don't recall school shootings in that time or any knife fights at least in my school.

We did not have organized gangs going into stores pillaging at will with an anemic police response.

What's going on in the country is a profound lack of respect for each other and a deterioration of our culture as a whole. The gun is the tool for the killings, but our cultural changes are the true cancer.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But it's really not new

Dec 2, 2021, 9:26 AM

School shootings go all the way back to the 1800s. There was even the case of someone blowing up a school in, I believe, the 1920s. Or let's not forget Univ. of Texas in 1966.

What's changed is the body count and the frequency of them. As to why that is, I do not have a good answer.

Its a clear example of the erosion of values

Dec 2, 2021, 9:35 AM [ in reply to Re: "There's nothing we can do about school shootings" ]

in our Country. The value system and the lack of parents' participation in their child's life, turning their backs on religion...it all goes back to the anger we are seeing in these kids and their lack of empathy for others.

A kid has to be loved and feel that in order to love another.

The parents who had the unsecured gun, if it was their gun, should get manslaughter charges too. These parents need to start learning that their guns are their responsibility.

No chance common sense gun laws like making someone liable if they provide or sell a weapon used in a violent crime would pass.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why do people compare guns to cars?

Dec 2, 2021, 5:39 PM

Do you know you're required to have insurance which includes other drivers? Also, I'd have no problem being held responsible if I was negligent selling anything. No idea what realistic expectations are in terms of background checks for a private seller but then again I think p2p sales are dumb for that reason.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you have to continue insuring the car after you sell it?

Dec 2, 2021, 7:01 PM

No, you don’t. What you are suggesting as “common sense” is absolutely retarded. Holding somebody liable for a gun they sold is exactly the same as holding someone liable for a car the sold, and no you wouldn’t want that.

That would be a good way to eliminate gun sales all together. But that is definitely leftists' line of thinking - someone else is responsible for my actions.

When I was in school, police would come randomly with drug dogs that would sniff out weapons and drugs. Too bad the police had been defunded.

Re: "There's nothing we can do about school shootings"

Dec 2, 2021, 9:26 AM

State-by-state we need to allow teachers and adult administrators in the schools who want to be trained to carry a concealed weapon to do so while at school.

The gun-free school zone idea is totally dysfunctional. Anyone willing to commit a crime AIN'T GONNA FOLLOW A SIGN THAT SAYS NO GUNS ALLOWED. How hard can it be for people to understand this?

The only way to stop these kids is metal detectors everywhere, which would require a major change to high-school facilities and culture everywhere in the USA, or ensure the potential criminals know they are likely to be quickly shot by someone inside the school if they go wonky.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's another nope

Dec 2, 2021, 9:32 AM

There's a reason police and military oppose this idea. It takes significant training to teach people in those fields to use lethal force when necessary, and those are often in scenarios not as chaotic as a mass shooting in a school. Experienced SWAT members have spoken out as to how this is a terrible idea given the training they have gone through.

It also creates more safety issues than necessary in schools.

Funding more resource officers is the better answer. And that's going to take tax dollars, folks. Put trained officers in there.

Metal detectors are an expensive failure here. No shooter is going to walk through them.

EDIT: Looks like in the Michigan shooting, there was no resource officer. A lawmaker in Mich was about to introduce a bill to put them in schools before the shooting happened.

Unless you make it far more difficult to obtain a concealed permit, you are far more likely to provide a potential shooter with a weapon or accidentally fire the weapon than you are to prevent another shooting.

mind that wielded it. As was posted earlier in the thread, when I was in High School there was a whole bunch of guys with guns in the gunracks of their trucks. Heck I carried a lockback pocket knife every day to school as did most guys. The knife wasn't for self defense, fighting or anything of that nature - I kept it on me because I went to work in a department store immediately after school and used it to open/breakdown boxes.

There were fist fights that would break out from time to time but the idea of bringing in a gun and killing someone didn't exist. It never even occurred to anyone that this would be the way to handle a dispute or vent their anger with someone.

There seems to be many more in our society today that place little to no value on human life than has been the case in past generations. When we lose our moral compass from one of absolute right and wrong to one of relativism where right/wrong is malleable and determined by how one feels in the moment then this outcome is not surprising.
