The climate in Houston would be problematic from my perspective but you may be used to oppressive heat and humidity. I lived in Savannah for 4 years and summers were tough...

Moving to an old mill village neighborhood in the upstate would be 10,000% improvement over Cootlumbia. If I was younger, Albuquerque would be nice. A lot to do around there.

My son is working on his doctorate at VCU. My understanding is that it's a very good med school.
Richmond is an older, mid-sized city (about twice Cola's size, roughly equal to Birmingham or Memphis or Louisville) in a location that is similar to Cola's: on a navigable river at the fall line,not far from the ocean. However, unlike Cola, it's not sitting upstream from an enormous swamp. So, while it can get hot there in the summer, it's not oppressive (or as oppressive, depending on your tolerance). DC, a reclaimed swamp that is 100 miles north, is worse than Richmond in that respect.
It's growing, but moderately.
Richmond has four distinct seasons, but it's not far enough north for the winters to be harsh. My understanding is that there's been little to no snow this year. Fall is glorious there. Lots of color. It's not far from the mountains, not far from DC, not far from Va Beach, and it has everything that you'd expect a city of its size to have, both good and bad.
Can't really speak to the night life, if that's of importance. But I've lived in several large and medium-sized cities, and I've found that claimed differences in that respect are overblown, except for music cities like Nashville, which have an obvious advantage in that respect.

Lived there for several years middle TN is a great place to live. If you like the outdoors it's the most like the upstate. You've got mountains and lakes right there although it's a couple hours farther from the ocean. BNA is the easiest airport I've ever been thru and it's more centrally located so you can find cheaper flights to many places in the US. Caution though the bars close at 5am that'll get ya if you don't watch out. Finally; no state income tax
I have family in Albuquerque and it's nice to visit, but I like to see some green every now and again. Also it seems to be easier to get to the west coast from there than the east if that matters. You can get direct flights to Lax but going east you'll have to go through DFW or Chi.

I have been to most of these places; here are my thoughts....
Salt Lake City - never been
Tucson - been there many times and it's a dump
Houston - been there a couple of times, it's huge but I wasn't impressed. I have a good friend who lived there for years and liked it ok.
Albuquerque - been many many times, and it's booooorrrriiiing
Nashville - awesome place been there many many times
Richmond - never been but a really good friend went to school there and said it was so-so.

How bad is Tucson? It’s the most affordable of the options we’ve looked it. They pay well and housing costs aren’t that bad.
It’s not far from Phoenix. And we both love visiting our national parks. We go to a couple every year.

My niece lives in Tucson and loves it--with her family of 8. I've been there, but 36 years ago. I just remember the dry heat, the brown-brown-brown, and the Saguaro cactus.

I was not crazy about Phoenix and the surrounding areas when we played out there in 2016. Not sure how close that is to Tucson.
I’m a mountain guy so I would prefer Nashville even though that’s not my preference of spots in Tennessee.

I've been traveling to Houston for 25 years on business. Its OK but nothing special, the only reason to go there is for a career move and then move on from there. I've also house hunted there and considered moving there twice but ultimately made other choices that I have been happy with. I'd check out the other places on your list harder.

Good:
I agree that SLC is beautiful. It also has fabulous dry powder skiing 30 minutes from downtown (.Park City).
Almost never rains -- it's in the desert. It snows frequently due to altitude.
County is only 50% LDS.
Yellowstone NP is approx 4 hour drive.
Moab known for Redrock biking is 3 hr drive and sits next to Arches and Canyonland NPs. Add an hour to Zion and Bryce Canyon NPs. About the same for Capitop Reef NP.
The bad:
Can be very cold. Can be very hot.
The Great Salt Lake is drying up. That exposes arsenic and salt that will be blown into town.
SLC is under a long-term drought. Water rationing is very likely near term.
Utah is 90% LDS. (I find them to be friendly and family-centered. But some people won't like the LDS Church controlling the govt.)
Also, their restrictions against the sales of coffee and alcohol can be annoying -- but not in SLC itself.
Might be a great place for 3 to 5 years -- perhaps the best of your options.

As amazing as the pictures of our western national parks are - the reality is even more amazing. Even if the city is a wash, being able to travel to the parks - and to see a totally different way of living would be worthwhile adventures - enough to fill up several years.

I spent most of a week in Phoenix in early March. High temps were in the upper 90s every day. Pretty in early Marchn but too hot.
We rented a car in Phoenix and it came w a 24-pack of free water. We found out that you never go anywhere in the summer without a water cache. Most rental cars come back with bottled water.
Summer highs in central and lower AZ get to 110 often. Within the last 10 years the airport was closed for several days, by the FAA, one summer b/c the air temps (120F) were too high to get planes up.
I lived in Austin, TX, for 3 years. Hated the summers -- highs at 100F most days. We drove on long vacations to the mtns of Colorado. You couldn't pay me to live in Tucson or Phoenix. Both are much hotter than Austin.

when I was really young and fit. That made it fun for me with all the hot ASU girls. The times I went to Tuscon for work, I absolutely hated it.

However there is a lot of things to do for leisure and fun. Nashville has a lot of bars and nightlife and bbif music scene. Traffic can be a bit hectic but not too bad.

for work. I always hate leaving Nashville once I get there. Sure expensing an occasional stay at the JW Marriott on the company dime helps, but the people are so welcoming there, the food is excellent, and the bars are top notch.

Salt Lake City - only been there once for a very quick meeting. No opinion.
Tucson - stayed there for a couple of the playoff games in Phoenix because the flights were cheaper. Not impressed. 2 + hours to Phoenix and didn’t see much to do in Tucson. The description someone gave of Anderson in there desert sounds about right.
Houston - just been through a couple of times but the more rural areas north of the city looked pretty good.
Albuquerque - haven’t been there but know a couple of people from there and they seem to like it.
Nashville - Easily would be my first choice on this list. Beautiful part of the country and lots to do. I’m sure with the brewery boom all over there should be plenty there. Not sure about real estate costs but I know hotel costs are out of sight like Charleston.
Richmond - been there a few times and it seemed pretty average. They have improved the downtown area and there are some decent restaurants and stuff there now. The rest of the city is not that great IMO.

Houston traffic is ridiculous, it's takes a long time to get anywhere. It's also very hot and humid.
However, there's plenty to do there because it's so big.

I have a co-worker that loves to go to the national parks out West every year and he said Utah is just amazingly beautiful. I wouldn’t be too crazy about the LDS excess though.

My work had me in Nashville for 3 years. I left about 15 months ago.
It’s a fun town. Lots to do outside of the tourist honky tonks on Broad Street. You will certainly never be bored in regards to dining, entertainment, etc. There are plenty of parks, historical sites, and yes…. Breweries.
Pros: No State income tax, no automobile property tax
Cons: Ever increasing traffic, crime trending upward, panhandlers (more homeless than most are accustomed to), high home costs/high home property tax.
Summary: I think you would enjoy it there. Like anywhere, you learn to avoid certain areas, thus mitigating traffic and/or crime concerns. I would recommend living outside of Nashville and commuting from a place such as Hendersonville, Gallitin, Mt Juliet, etc.

Since you mentioned being more of a brewery guy than a bar guy I felt the need to add some intel on RVA. RVA has an incredible brewery scene, I'd argue top 5 in the country. There are certainly some rough areas but that is the case in nearly every decent sized city. There is plenty to do outside nearby and in the state. And based on your Avatar I'm guessing you prefer to live in a "progressive" area. Well RVA is definitely that. Now I've never lived there but for years would stop at their breweries to pick up supplies on my way back and forth to DC. Good luck...

I am familiar with Richmond, VA. It is a very nice old city with major wealth in areas and major poverty in areas. As most cities are these days, it is very liberal. My daughter was a teacher there before she and her husband moved to Anderson, SC 2 years ago... I would suggest putting you kids in private schools (if you have any). I would say that Monument Avenue is a great area to stroll around, but all of the old statues were torn down a few years ago during the riots. There are some very nice suburbs around Richmond.
I can't give Richmond a glowing review, but my daughter and her husband enjoyed the 2 years they were there living in the city.

If you move to Houston .. if you have kids in school Deer Park is best part of Houston area plus greatest school district.

My Daughter lives in Spring TX just north of Houston. They love it there. Lots of very nice breweries. Plenty to do without venturing into Houston but obviously plenty to do there as well. Spring is not far from The Woodlands and Conroe... also nice suburbs.

Never spent time in Albuquerque but was stationed for a short time south of there and really liked New Mexico.

Salt Lake City, no bueno! No party scene, no micro-brews, have to leave the city to find a good time. Now there is a bunch of hiking trails, off-road trails and trout fishing. But it is run by the Mormons and if you are not one they don't play well with others.
I managed a large group in SLC in the software biz, then we moved to Ogden. Being from SC, liked a beer, good food and liked to get a little redneck on wknds, the mormons on my staff would smile in my face and talk chit about me behind my back unfortunately. I never had a problem until I had to fire a couple and it was a full on inside attack on me.
Nashville is one of the funnest cities I have been in. Plus there is a lot of fun stuff just outside the city.
Richmond too close to DC, very liberal and lots of crime. Lot of gangs laying around to support DC and Baltimore.
Pretty sure Nashville #1 for me then Tuscon. Houston probably 3rd.

However, that was over 25 years ago. I visited Dallas, San Antonio, Johnson Space Center, zoos, Six Flags, Astrodome, etc. while I was out. I enjoyed the food.

Grew up outside of Richmond. It's basically the last stop between Southern and Northern Virginia based on 95. 20 miles north, might take 20 minutes. Any further and you are in DC traffic backed up to Stafford/Quantico.
Henrico County has good schools.
If you don't have kids, and are into more of a hipster/clicky scene, that's what The Fan is mostly. They have the nice whiskey bars where they torch cinnamon under a big iceball in your glass then glaze it with some kind of CBD/honey/bitters.
Then you walk out, turn a right, and it's slums. If your fiancé is going into trauma medicine, she might get a couple of GSW cases a year.
Cant speak to the other cities, but Nashville's is a blast. Beautiful women and great crowds/music...
One fine memory from Richmond (other than RIR) is The Black Sheep submarine baguettes with chicken livers were amazing, link below (second lamb joke of the day on my behalf):

Oh and there is King's Dominion, or whatever Paramount or who owns Paramount calls it. It's basically like a high-class state fair. They have some nice historic wooden coasters (formerly the Hurler and the Rebel Yell, from well, ya know, the Confederacy days).
There is also a very large Greentop, Air$tream, Harley, and Bass Pro Shops all in that same little stretch.
