Do we maintain a non-conference rival if we go to SEC?

Jul 17, 2022, 9:55 AM

Admittedly I’m putting the cart way before the horse here, but here’s a question for speculation purposes. Assume the following:

- Clemson ends up in SEC, along with FSU, UNC and either UVA or Miami
- SEC moves to 9 conference games
- Teams are still allowed to schedule 1 FCS game, so Clemson continues its tradition of supporting Furman, Citadel, SC State, etc.
- Teams are still allowed to schedule a G5 game to count towards bowl eligibility, whatever the G5 is after the dust settles. So this is our App State, Troy, etc. type of game annually

This leaves one extra game. We no longer need to that marquee OOC game with UGA, LSU, OU, etc. anymore since they are in conference. So do we go national and schedule home-and-homes with power conference teams in the Midwest or west coast? Or, do we establish a regional non-conference rival game since USuC would now be a conference game? For example, this would we a way to continue the GT game.

My vote would be to try to keep playing GT each year. It’s an easy road trip, honors our history, lots of alumni in ATL and if it was staggered with UGA on the schedule, we could guarantee Georgia recruits a game in their home state every year.

NC State

Good, fair question, but I think we need to wait and see

how this all shakes out. Given the scenario exactly as you present it, I like the idea of playing GT as well. Good, easy road trip, respectable level of competition, quite a bit of history and tradition involved.

Agreed, BUT what does GT get out of this?

Hard to see them keeping UGA *and* Clemson on the schedule every year OOC. Plus I could see them being a little jaded at us for killing the ACC lol.

We'd be required to do whatever ESPN wants us to do.

They'd probably set up an SEC/B1G challenge early in the season based on previous year record or preseason rankings.

You mean start? We don't have one now.***
