Do other Shotgun Heavy HUNH teams struggle with short

Oct 15, 2014, 10:39 AM

yardage and goal line situations the way we do?

Clarification: top tier teams

I saw OU bring in their big boys for 1st and goal from the 1

on Saturday. They ran the HUNH all the way down Texas' throat giving them first and goal on the 1.

They bring in the heavy package including a guy that looked a lot like Kurt Flemming, and blew Texas off the line for an easy TD.

Best Is The Standard

It's as much personnel as anything. We were actually

good at short yardage last year with Boyd and more capable OL. This year we A) don't have a QB that's well suited to run the QB power, and B) our OL gets completely blown up on any slow run play.

FWIW Oregon is really struggling to run the ball this year with a crappy OL too.

The one knock on the staff this year has been the failure to adjust. It's been pretty obvious for weeks now that those plays weren't going to be effective this year, but they kept going back to the well. I think we will see adjustments starting this weekend, but it's hard to argue this shouldn't have been done earlier.

Not nearly as bad as us..

Personally, I don't think we use the right personnel in those situations. You have to specifically practice those situations and have people trained up that don't normally get the ball in other situations. Specifically, JJ McCoullough was RB/WR hybrid in HS and he is 6'4, 250, maybe train him up to carry the rock in short yardage. If the Chad is hell bent on snapping it in the Shotgun then have a WildTiger formation with Choice, or JJ taking a direct snap with Reader acting as the FB, or just give the ball to Reader.. And I know people say Cole isn't a runner, and that's true, but he's 6'4, 230 and proved he can take a snap under center vs Lville to close the game, so just lean forward with him. I think we definitely have the personnel to be very effective in short yardage, but just don't use it..

I tend to agree with you.

I guess I just don't understand the mindset of running shotgun on the 1 yard line or any 4th and short situations.

I know he said deshaun wasn't good under center, but that's a situation we have to get better at. If Deshaun or Cole can't do it then find someone that can for that situation.

I would personally rather see wildcat than cole qb power in that situation.

The Chad coined his version of the HUNH as the "smashmouth spread" and honestly I haven't seen much if any smashmouth this year.

I'm with you entirely..

Snapping the ball 4-5 yard behind the LOS when you need a 1 yard or less is moronic regardless if it is "what we do." We have a much better chance at getting a yard or even a good spot taking it under center and leaning forward. I know everyone that was around me in the stands Saturday was definitely aggravated at our play calling when we had the ball on the GL on the last drive. Cuss words galore...

1st & goal on the 1 and the shotgun do not compute.***

Ah, another forest/trees guy...

1st and Goal at FSU 1, D.J. Howard run for 1 yd for a TD (SHOTGUN handoff)

1st and Goal at FSU 2 Deshaun Watson run for 2 yds for a TD (SHOTGUN QB keeper)

Let's not forget CJ Davidson scored from the 1, from the shotgun, prior to the bad snap play. That should've been TD #3, from 2 yards in, from the shotgun.

With two players out on the OL and our unprepared, backup QB against Louisville, perhaps the best defense we've faced since LSU, we failed on a couple short yardage plays. It happens, especially against really good defenses who occasionally blow up your OL.

Please list some of the apparent plethora of other failures to score TDs from within a couple yards...

By the way, just flipping through the channels this past Saturday, I saw Alabama, Arkansas, and Michigan all fail on critical short yardage plays. All of them were from under center, and of the failed attempts was even a QB sneak.

It happens. Every single Saturday and Sunday. From all sorts of formations.

You should always do what you do best, and we've been doing that to the tune of top 8 in wins since 2011, two consecutive top 10 offenses and two consecutive top 10 finishes. How many times has that happened in your life? Do you think our OC has had anything to do with those numbers?

By the way, we need to and will do something different than a Cole Stoudt keeper next time we're in short yardage.

OK. How many times did we try and not make it?***

It worked for 2 years with Boyd taking the snaps and an OL

Oct 15, 2014, 11:35 AM [ in reply to I tend to agree with you. ]

that, while not great, was at least serviceable. Honestly i don't think it matters who you put back there right now, that play just isn't going to work because the QB (or RB or whoever you put back there) is getting hit 2-3 yards behind the LOS. TBH i think we need do something to keep opposing defenses a little more honest on 3rd and 1 type situations because they are bringing heat every time and blowing us up. I wouldn't mind taking some shots over the middle on 3rd and shorts to try to keep them a little more honest.
