DJ Professional Opinion

Dec 30, 2021, 12:35 PM

This goes against what all the coots are saying on here...but this is a person who gets paid for his opinion...

D.J. Uiagalelei made good decisions on a number of plays to check down to the backs and let them gobble up space. Swing passes were accurate.

The 3rd and 7 on the last series of the first half when he moved up in the pocket, changed his arm angle, and found Dacari Collins for 12 yards was fantastic. In the opening drive of the second half, you could certainly argue it wasn't the best decision to throw it up into double coverage, but Beaux Collins came down with it on third down.

Uiagalelei converted a couple of third downs with his legs on that same drive.

Uiagalelei's final numbers: 21-of-33 for 187 yards and one interception.....

Clemson lacks playmakers, specifically in the passing game, and drops and poor blocking (Davis Allen certainly excluded) remain issues. Hopefully, Clemson has better play and luck on the injury front at receiver next season. And hopefully offensive line run-blocking is better too.

But he also took a few careless chances that could have easily been turnovers. And he has accuracy issues with being wild high. And I think on the first drive you saw that the game plan was for DJ to have short, safe, throws where he wouldn't try to force bad decisions. In my opinion, the kid coming in from Texas is more what Clemson is used to. And I think Dabo learned a huge lesson at Georgia years ago when it was evident in the 1st half that Watson was the man as opposed to Stoudt. But they went with Stoudt in the 2nd half anyway I suppose trying not to rock the chemistry boat by benching the veteran. Was surprised he hung with Kelly as long as they did when Lawrence arrived, but he got away with it. Don't see him doing that again. Depending on how things go in the spring, I wouldn't be a bit surprised that the writing will be on the wall and you see DJ in the portal this summer

The point I was making was that the majority of those knocking DJ, were praising the play of Purdy...when Purdy's stats were not as good as DJ's...and the bottom line...DJ won, Purdy lost!!!!!

This shows a complete bias on the part of those who were knocking DJ, while praising Purdy!!!

If DJ and Purdy stats were switched...the only thing those who dislike DJ would have been saying was that the fumble at the end of the game that cost them the first down proves how inept DJ is! You know that is true, but instead, those praising Purdy completely forgot about the fumble he had that may have cost him the game.

And those that were praising Purdy also talked about how good he played because of how good our defense was...yet they failed to mention that DJ played just as good against ISU when they also had a top defense!

And, while not always true...you will notice that the majority of the people knocking DJ have low pulses...take that for what it is worth. I wonder what those with high pulses feel like when they align with the low pulse coots on here....

Purdy threw for almost a thousand more yards, more than twice as many tds while throwing less ints, averaged almost 2 more yards per pass, and his completion % was more than 15 points higher than DJ for the season. His qbr was almost 27 points higher.

So while Purdys stats may not have been that great against Clemson, he thoroughly outplayed DJ this season, and that’s why Clemson would be better with him. Even Trevor and DW4 had bad games and had worse stats in a single game than much worse qbs.

Re: DJ Professional Opinion

Dec 30, 2021, 4:04 PM

Yes, Purdy had great numbers against the league that played no defense (except ISU). Any team that had no defense, we looked great (WF), and DJ played a lot better. Don't let the stats get in your way. What was happening here was that the naysayers were all saying how good Purdy played in THIS GAME. And we have proven that it was a shaded assumption by biased people. If you look for faults, you will find them.

Purdy would have just as bad of a time playing GA, Pitt, NcST, etc as DJ, especially with our OL.

Yes, I will agree that Purdy has better stats than DJ for the season... But if DJ had their offensive line, and the continuity of receivers, he also would have had better stats.

Like the decision to cause a pick 6 by deflecting an already deflected pass right into the hands of one of our defenders?

I watched Purdy for a game … DJ for 12 games prior to last night. Had seen enough and no expectations. If you think he’ll improve enough to be our starter - you must be a hopeful Coot.

This year was disappointing. DJ has the potential, as you can see here against an above average defense.

still think we're going to learn he's been playing with two

significant injuries; finger and knee. Yes, many will say "we had other QBs ready to play", but I would bet Dabo and crew are a little ahead of the internet crew on making a judgement for who should play QB.

Re: still think we're going to learn he's been playing with two

This would align with the TP transfer...he would look at the injuries to DJ, and say...if Dabo will not play me with this...I don't want to stay!

The only other possible explanation would be that TP was not able to perform as well as DJ, so they had to prop up DJ with injuries, to be able to win...I really did not see where TP looked better when he was in, he just ran the ball more, which gave the defense another thing to think about, which may have helped him in the other areas...This is what helped Tahj when he was here.

Re: still think we're going to learn he's been playing with two

Dec 30, 2021, 8:16 PM

TP ,from what I see of him, didn’t have the accuracy to play for a decent power five team. He was a good runner but that’s it. I see great accuracy even in lower division football and wonder how D.J. got so far off with his. In the two games he started for Lawrence he showed promise with accuracy. Where did that go?

Yep, it is highly likely the finger and knee injuries hindered DJ greatly this year. It makes more sense than anything else I've heard. He was very good last year, this year not so much.

Re: DJ Professional Opinion

Dec 30, 2021, 1:17 PM

He typically makes at least a couple of throws every game that you usually only see on Sundays so the.ability is there. Unfortunately its only a couple of throws a game. The rest of them might end up God knows where and he locks in on one WR constantly. Those kind of things vastly overshadow the positives, at least so far.

Re: DJ Professional Opinion

Dec 30, 2021, 1:29 PM

Clemson does not lack playmakers. They lacked chemistry and timing in the passing game. A huge issue is that the wr Corp was most consistently injured or out with covid. DJ and the wrs never trusted each other. I also think DJ had some issues going on mentally after that UGA game (that game was a result of OL play not being up to snuff more than anything).

Re: DJ Professional Opinion

Dec 30, 2021, 1:47 PM

Agree with most of what you are saying. We started two true freshmen in this game, along with Swinney? How could you possible develop a report with that type of turnover? If DJ could have stepped up into the "pocket" like Purdy last night, his stats would have been much better. The fact that we have such a good defensive line, and we only got to Purdy once, and Purdy had nearly as much time as he needed, really shows how our offensive line was still playing poorly. Top that off with holding ISU got away with, and you see the result for DJ compared with Purdy...

Stats for receiving last night:
Dacari Collins 6 56 9.3 0 13
Will Shipley 5 53 10.6 0 19
Kobe Pace 4 38 9.5 0 16
Beaux Collins 3 20 6.7 0 12
Will Swinney 1 11 11.0 0 11
Davis Allen 2 9 4.5 0 6
TEAM 21 187 8.9 0 19

All freshmen and sophomores, and Swinney. 14 of 21 completions to true freshmen!

I really do not know how much effect DJ's parents divorce had on his play...that has to be unnerving for a kid that young.

Re: DJ Professional Opinion

Dec 30, 2021, 2:49 PM

One of those freshman played with him in high school. They have chemistry. He played better last night but he was still not allowed to be a real QB and press the defense. It was all short high completion
percentage throws. Brock Purdy had worse percentage stats but way outplayed DJ against a much better defense. ISU's defense was made to look better because they didn't have to defend anything but the run and essentially screen passes.

Re: DJ Professional Opinion

Dec 30, 2021, 3:12 PM

ISU plays a 3-3-5 defense for a reason...they play in the Big 12! They are pass happy. A good OC would recognize this and minimize downfield passes...Why are you hitting DJ for not passing downfield when the players were almost never downfield? If ever there was a defense designed to stop what the offense does, it was the ISU defense. If this had of worked the other way around, and DJ had a lot of interceptions, you would be criticizing Streeter of not taking what the defense gives you (which is what happened). If the familiarity of the two players (DJ and Collins) was really there, he would have played more at the beginning and when the players got hurt. Collins and DJ had to learn new routs, so familiarity was minimal...The only good thing may be what would happen when the play breaks down...then the familiarity would show up on modified routs (which is what happened?).

Re: DJ Professional Opinion

Dec 30, 2021, 4:52 PM

You still have to make the attempt from time to time to make them actually defend the field. If you don't or in our case with DJ "Can't" make them defend the entire field you end up making their defense look even better.

Re: DJ Professional Opinion

Dec 30, 2021, 5:17 PM [ in reply to Re: DJ Professional Opinion ]

Can you explain how you think Purdy "way outplayed" DJ last night? DJ had a better completion percentage, more yards per attempt, and fewer turnovers than Purdy. Purdy produced a whole 19 more offensive yards(passing and rushing) than DJ with 7 additional passing attempts. In what world is that way outplaying DJ?

Also, how do you figure Clemson had a much better defense? Iowa State entered the game at #10 in team defense while playing against Big 12 competition. I agree Clemson has the better overall defense, but it's not like Iowa State put a garbage defense or anything.

DJ

Dec 30, 2021, 3:45 PM

Does not move or run well enough to play in this offense. He cannot threaten the edge. His QB draws takes him forever to get momentum started upheld. The gaps close before he can there. This offense is best when the QB can get to the outside on the option plays.

And his lack of pocket presence really showed up with our O line.

Re: DJ Professional Opinion

Dec 30, 2021, 4:48 PM

I just want to see him fully healthy and then make a “final” opinion on him, receiver play was also a big issue (flashes of talent and skill but inconsistent, key drops in big moments every game), hope we can all get in sync together next year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DJ will be out of excuses next year

Dec 30, 2021, 7:12 PM

For most of us, that ship has sailed. For those of you who blame the receiving corp for everything, watch how much better they are when Cade plays vs. DJ. The debate will finally end.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm curious what he was seeing downfield - there were

Dec 30, 2021, 5:15 PM

definitely some plays where he was at least looking to throw downfield.

Not bashing Will S - but the fact that he starts for WRU tells you all you need to know about DJs options when looking for receivers.

His play has been well below expectations - but it's not entirely his fault.
