“Once upon a time” we were willing to BUY a hoops team with

Feb 14, 2022, 4:49 PM

... under the table payments.

Tate’s Locke along with big money guys like BC Inabinet brought a team to campus in 1974 that was good enough to have won the ACC and even the NCAA title if they’d have stuck around and we hadn’t gone on probation.

Skip Wise, Stan Rome, Tree Rollins, Colon Abraham ... all great as freshmen. Wise was 1st Team All-ACC and rookie of the year. Can you imagine those guys as seniors with 2-3 more similar classes behind them?

We proved that money CAN indeed buy basketball SUCCESS at Clemson. And it was not $$ in the form of spending on facilities nor upping coaches salaries. It was money and benefits that went *straight* into the players pockets!

Point being ... if we COULD get them here illegally with money then, how come we CAN’T get them here now that we can pay them legally?

Money for paying players is obviously the key to getting them here. Not fancy facilities. Not high-priced coaches. ... Money for the players!

So where are we with this? No BC Inabinet’s out there today? Where can we get the money we need to buy what the fans want and expect?

Just changing coaches is not going to be the answer. It never has been for Clemson basketball.

Something has to happen on the “money for players” scene. There is no other appeal for great basketball players to come to a Clemson.

I’m sorry. This is just the truth.

I can see that being an issue no doubt. Not sure many Clemson folks expect to be Duke but top 4 in the conference and a chance to win the league would be nice. NCAA at least 1/2 of the time.

There’s no reason Clemson basketball shouldn’t be great! It just takes a believe in what you are doing as Dabo has always said, a little faith & a great plan & culture.

We keep getting better & better everyday, in every way!

Culture is definitely stale. Least excitement about bball at Clemson since I can remember while following them.

NIL. It will be interesting to see Texas A&M's basketball class will look like in a couple of years..

You can do it with hidden gems in the good 3 star to lower 4 star talent that can really be developed. Bill Foster did it for good time, Cliff Ellis, Rick Barnes, and Oliver Purnell did it also. Now with the NIL you should be able to get more of them. PJ Hall has one with Barstool. Brad Brownell just can not develop enough players on a roster is what it comes down to.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We need five PJ Hall’s every year.

Feb 14, 2022, 5:09 PM

We need consistency.

No coach we’ve ever had has been consistent with recruiting nor with winning.

As good as PJ Hall is, he’s not nearly enough.

He’s just an instate diamond who finally fell our way.

We need five of his caliber every recruiting cycle to ever get where the fans seem to expect us to be.

Re: We need five PJ Hall’s every year.

Feb 14, 2022, 5:11 PM

You don't even need 5. 3 players a season equals 12 good players for 4 years. That is all you need...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes. But, you get my point though ... right?

Feb 14, 2022, 5:38 PM

Guys like PJ Hall need to be the rule and not the exception.

Cliff Ellis wasn’t exactly in the same category as the others you mentioned. Elden Campbell didn’t just come over from California because he was a lifelong Clemson fan. Then there was Wayne Buckingham and some others I could mention.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cliff definitely had a “way” of getting good players to come

Feb 14, 2022, 5:49 PM

... to Clemson every 2-3 years. I think he’s the best coach we ever had if you factor in length of tenure.

Feb 14, 2022, 7:56 PM

Barnes assembled the best rosters depth however. The year they lost to Minnesota was Clemson’s best team ever imo. Terrell McIntyre was so fun to watch. LJ was rocking loud then so it can return.

Speaking of Barnes, pretty darn good looking team he has. State of Tenn have better instate talent than SC? No.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Barnes was great up to a point. He’s been really good

Feb 14, 2022, 8:05 PM

... elsewhere as well. He’s a good solid coach. But, he absolutely failed to lure the true blue chip guys to Clemson once his initial success sort of plateaued.

He quit and we will never know if he could have been consistently great at Clemson ... which is all that matters.

Careful. Next thing we'll hear is that Brad should have four more years in order to get up to speed with this NIL stuff so he can finally put his real stamp on the program.

Well we are definitely trending in the right direction. In the last 24 hours we have found out we need to recruit better and score more than the other team. Have not yet read on the scoring part, but if true I’m expecting big things next year.

Feb 14, 2022, 5:17 PM

Point is, "we" cannot pay players in any sport. Your point is if a individual, family or company wrote checks, we could get players in every sport. Skip Wise is still the best player I have ever seen at Clemson. He could dominate and with his shot, that was almost behind his head, was not going to be blocked. BC and the gang tried to get Moses Malone so just imagine how good we would have been it that had happened.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My point is simple ... someone needs to write the check.

Feb 14, 2022, 5:36 PM

It doesn’t matter how it happens.

Clemson will never be a great program simplyby throwing money at coaches and facilities.

It has to go to the players. In some form or fashion.

Just a sad fact of where we are.

Bill Clendinon, Clifff Malpass, and George Hill.

Adrian Dantley was ready to sign with Clemson. The assts had done a great job recruiting him. Tates went for the last visit and Dantley said he’d heard that Tates was a tough guy to play for. Tates said “how would you like playing for Hitler?” Dantley went to ND. It wasn’t all good.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh, I’m not saying Tate’s was a good recruiter. I’m saying

Feb 14, 2022, 6:00 PM

... that “we” the Clemson program (via boosters) bought him a great team.

No, I don’t think he was a particularly appealing personality.

Heck, he was the guy who developed Bobby Knight into the personality he became.
