Les Miles pulled a Tommy Bowden/Reggie Merriweather.

Jan 2, 2013, 10:55 AM

LSU had the lead and the momentum in the 3rd quarter and Les Miles inexplicably took his workhorse off the field, leading to a complete offensive failure in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

Let's look at the play-calling:

LSU 1st drive, 3rd Quarter:
1st and 10 at LSU 43 Jeremy Hill rush for 57 yards for a TOUCHDOWN.

LSU 2nd drive, 3rd Quarter:
1st and 10 at LSU 32 Michael Ford rush for 1 yard to the LSU 33. 21 13
2nd and 9 at LSU 33 Zach Mettenberger pass complete to Spencer Ware for 5 yards to the LSU 38.
3rd and 4 at LSU 38 Zach Mettenberger pass complete to Jarvis Landry for 9 yards to the LSU 47 for a 1ST down.
1st and 10 at LSU 47 Jeremy Hill rush for 5 yards to the Clem 48.
2nd and 5 at CLEM 48 Zach Mettenberger pass incomplete to Kadron Boone.
3rd and 5 at CLEM 48 Zach Mettenberger pass incomplete to James Wright.
4th and 5 at CLEM 48 Jamie Keehn punt for 18 yards, punt out-of-bounds at the Clem 30.

4passes, 1 rush

LSU 3rd drive, 3rd quarter:
1st and 10 at LSU 35 Kenny Hilliard rush for 5 yards to the LSU 40. 21 13
2nd and 5 at LSU 40 Kenny Hilliard rush for 3 yards to the LSU 43.
3rd and 2 at LSU 43 Timeout LOUISIANA STATE, clock 8:18.
3rd and 2 at LSU 43 Zach Mettenberger sacked by Jonathan Willard for a loss of 3 yards to the LSU 40.
4th and 5 at LSU 40 Jamie Keehn punt for 39 yards, fair catch by Adam Humphries at the Clem 21.

Where is J. Hill?

LSU 4th drive, 3rd quarter:
1st and 10 at CLEM 29 Jeremy Hill rush for 4 yards to the Clem 25. 21 13
2nd and 6 at CLEM 25 Jeremy Hill rush for 16 yards to the Clem 9 for a 1ST down.
1st and Goal at CLEM 9 Jeremy Hill rush for 2 yards to the Clem 7.
2nd and Goal at CLEM 7 Zach Mettenberger pass complete to Travis Dickson for 4 yards to the Clem 3.
3rd and Goal at CLEM 3 Zach Mettenberger pass incomplete to Jarvis Landry.
4th and Goal at CLEM 3 Drew Alleman 20 yard field goal GOOD. 24 13

Hill picks up 22 yards on three plays, then they stop rushing the ball... why?

LSU 5th drive, 3rd quarter:
1st and 10 at LSU 11 Jeremy Hill rush for 3 yards to the LSU 14. 24 13
2nd and 7 at LSU 14 Zach Mettenberger pass incomplete to James Wright.
3rd and 7 at LSU 14 CLEMSON penalty 5 yard Offside on Xavier Brewer accepted.
3rd and 2 at LSU 19 Jeremy Hill rush for 1 yard to the LSU 20.
End of 3rd Quarter

Only time J Hill fails to produce in the 3rd quarter. It must have scared Miles pretty good though, because...

J Hill gets 0 touches in the 4th quarter.

Hats off to our players for winning this game. I'm not trying to take anything away from them. However, the ESPN article criticizing Les Miles' coaching decisions in this game is accurate. Les Miles got pass-happy and that gave us a chance to win.

You put way too much effort into spinning.

Jan 2, 2013, 10:59 AM

And while in this post is facts, your conclusion, and and constant criticism of the coaching staff, contrary to FACTS, is...spinning.

You are so full of #### it isnt even funny.

Of Hills 124 yards 90 of them came on 3 carries.

The majority of the time he was shut down to around 3 ypc.

You keep repeating yourself, but the play chart proves

Jan 2, 2013, 11:01 AM

you wrong. The only time Hill was held to less than 5 yards per carry was on the last two plays of the 3rd quarter.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

if he got 90 yards on 3 carries...

Jan 2, 2013, 11:04 AM

and he had 120 yards total, that means he only averaged a little over 3 yards per carry on the rest of his runs.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

YPC across the entire game is irrelevant. I'm talking about

Jan 2, 2013, 11:06 AM

the second half, specifically the 3rd quarter, when LSU failed to close out the game even though they had the lead and the momentum.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The first half IS significant

Jan 2, 2013, 11:20 AM

Since you keep mentioning what he did earlier in the game.

I don't think you can make that leap of logic in saying that because he was successful in the first half, he'd be able to squeak past us in the second.

Our defense beat them to the point where they had to change what they're doing, drastically. They lost, we won. Nothing more to it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So 5 of his last 6 carries were for 5 yards or less....

Jan 2, 2013, 11:06 AM [ in reply to You keep repeating yourself, but the play chart proves ]

...think that played into the OC thinking ???

Plus knowing Clemson was sending everyone to stop it ???

The passing was there for them....even on the last 2nd and 2....their QB just missed him.

We went after their strength....and their weakness showed.

Jan 2, 2013, 11:07 AM [ in reply to You keep repeating yourself, but the play chart proves ]

Jesus mouth breather it is basic math...

He had 90 yards on 3 carries.

Subtract 90 from 124= 34 yards

Subtract 3 carries from 12= 9 carries

34/9= 3.7 ypc. Not 5 yards per carry as you are trying to claim.

So what is your point then? You can't reduce football to

Jan 2, 2013, 11:10 AM

just statistics. It was clear that Hill was the hot hand, and should have been fed the ball more.

But let's just play your game, playstation all-american, and assume that YPC means anything. Let's even take out his good rushes and selectively create a YPC that supports your position, and say that it was 3.7.

Even at 3.7 YPC, all Miles had to do was run Hill, because 3.7 X 3 = 11.1, which is good enough for first downs all night long.

But that's really just a stupid game to play, because statistics are meaningless in football. As the play chart shows, Hill was the workhorse and was the produce for LSU, yet Miles stopped feeding him the ball inexplicably.

So 7 of his 12 carries were for less than your proclaimed 5 yards every time he touched the ball number.

Poor Uttles you are so #### biased with your pathetic anti Clemson agenda it is flat out sad.

Jan 2, 2013, 11:25 AM [ in reply to I'll take that as an admission of defeat. Thanks for playing*** ]

Is it too much to admit that you're wrong? I can't see any beef in your argument. It's all "Coulda, shoulda, woulda". We played a less than stellar game against a very good opponent and still won.

Both sides made some bad mistakes, but Clemson made the plays when they had to, and LSU failed to do so. In fact, most of their success against us came as a direct result of some nasty messup on our part (fumble at the start, consistently bad special teams play, a rare slip on defense to start the second halve).

If anything, ESPN should be writing "Clemson defeats LSU, despite playing their B game."

You are the one spouting off at the mouth claiming he was gashing us for 5 yards every play. Facts dont back that claim up though chump.

Jan 2, 2013, 11:19 AM [ in reply to You keep repeating yourself, but the play chart proves ]

From a small sample size? It just doesn't work that way. You can't look at what X player did over a few plays in the first half (a completely different time, situationally and momentum-wise) and just know that he's going to get it done 45 minutes later?

I understand what you're getting at, but your logic is just tragically flawed.

CT - you're overlooking one thing - football.

Jan 2, 2013, 11:15 AM

Clemson stacked the box on 2nd down at mid-field on their last drive. Clemson had stuffed LSUs run on 3rd and short at least twice earlier in the game. He knew he had to pass to get the first down.

Clemson's stellar D earlier in the game made him change his strategy. Also, LSU only had 6 plays in the 4th quarter and they had been rotating backs all game.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Les Miles lost the game before their last drive. We had 3

Jan 2, 2013, 11:17 AM

time outs, so that point is moot anyway. I wasn't talking about that.

They had 6 plays in the 4th because their playcalling sucked.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Or... because our defense stopped them?

Jan 2, 2013, 11:18 AM

And our offense chewed the mess out of the clock?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This!

Jan 2, 2013, 11:17 AM [ in reply to CT - you're overlooking one thing - football. ]

We had been doing an awesome job when we stacked the box, they were unable to convert a number of third downs when we did this.

It's likely that people would be calling for his head if he called some running plays there and got stuffed (like they did on most 3rd and shorts).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Les Miles' defense pulled a "can't stop them Tigers!"

Jan 2, 2013, 11:16 AM

Couldn't get the stops when they needed them the most (4th and 16), AND their offense couldn't get much going through most of the game.

LSU got beat like a drum, despite what the score says. The proof is in the stats.

Miles said that they 'had' to pass because Clemson 'D' was stacking the box and shutting down their run game. Now of course on last possession, he could have run three times but Dabo had 3 time outs to burn as a counter. Spin it how you wish, Clemson simply 'whipped' LSU in fourth quarter. Period
