Satellite Help for Tailgating

Sep 10, 2012, 11:23 AM

I need some satellite help from you tailgating expert.  I’ve been using the same direct TV dish for the past 4 years.
My buddy has a new direct TV box and I could not get a signal Saturday.  My question is do I need to get a newer dish
Or can I change the settings on the new box?

SD box for SD dish. HD box for HD dish

you can change the settings on an HD box for SD dish but that is above my paygrade.

We had problems with sat strength Saturday as well and have been using my dish for 5+ years.

Pretty simple solution. If the new "box" has an "H" in the model number, that means it's high def. Press menu on remote, scroll down to setup, enter, then scroll to satellite and enter. Go over to repeat satellite setup, choose the dish you have, probably 18" round in the menu, then select. This sets the signal meter to look for the correct satellite, mos probably 101W.

^^^^^^ This works every time.

I have been using directv for 7 years at tailgates (running HD now ), and repeat satellite setup fixes almost all problems ( if you can get signal on 101 and 99). Dual tuner, SWM receivers will give you the most trouble.

Call the technical help people at .....

DirectTV - give them the dish and receiver model numbers - they should know what the problem is.

Did you have the black box?

Sep 10, 2012, 12:04 PM

I think it is called the SWM. It is the black box that 2 cables connect to then connect to the 2 ports on the back of the receiver. The new receivers will not work without it unless you go in and change the settings. There are 3 settings you have to change in order to make it work without the SWM. I cannot remember the 3, but they are drop down selections at set up. I know one you have to change from dual to single.

I want to thank all of you for your help & suggestions. I had my friend activate his old box, we did a dry run tonight & it worked. I always do a dry run before the season starts except for this year I learned my lesson.
