Into the game with inherited runners the entire season he was perfect at stranding those runners; I think he said 9 for 9.

high-flying popups that the INFs and OFs lost in the twilight skies against UNC and VT. I am fairly sure some runners scored on those.
Ammons did shut down UMia in the ACCCG.

I wasn't happy either when he came in but that tarholes game you mentioned he did his job and induced what should have been game ending popups.

VT 9th inning 3 runs, 3 hits no outs
NC 9th inning 1 run, 3 hits, 3 outs
Clear pattern.
Hindsight is 20/20 but I would have brought in RHP Hughes!

You answered your own question with "almost". I guess he was considered our closer and the matchup looked good to Coach Bakich. Tennessee is a good hitting team with probably 40 more home runs than we had so a home run was not a surprise, just how the guy guessed right and hit it about a mile was a killer.
