Aug 19, 2013, 11:32 PM

Don't know if these have been posted by anyone but some pretty cool aerial pics of the game 46 years ago.

great pictures, love those old pictures,

it looks like Littlejohn was in it's early phase of construction and it doesn't look like the Doug Kingsmore baseball stadium was there at the time

I can't recall if I made that game or not but I did not miss many big games in those late 60s.

Clemson lost that game 24-17 and I think a RB for Georgia who played at Daniel HS scored the winning TD.

The RB's name was Kent Lawrence from Central. He couldn't get into Clemson because of the ACC's 800 rule so he went to Georgia. Buddy Gore and Frank Liberatore played great games...should have beaten them. With the score tied in the 4th quarter, Gore ripped off a 15-20 yard run which was called back due to clipping...Georgia made a late rally.

Littlejohn opened in 1968...

so it was under construction when those pictures were made. Clemson didn't play baseball on the current site until the 1970 season, the old field was where the tennis courts are now. The thing is, it looks like there's cars parked on the baseball field, which is a Boston College-like thing to do. That's about the time soccer re-started (it was originally played in the 1930s for about 4 years), and it was played on Riggs Field.

Did soccer start on Riggs Field?

I remember watching games on the rec field behind the north stands of Death Valley back in the 70s when I was a little kid.

I'm not sure where they played from 1934 to 1939.....

Aug 20, 2013, 9:42 AM

There was no team from 1940 to 1966 and I am not entirely sure where they played when the program was re-established under Coach Ibrahim in 1967.

However, I do know that based on my attending soccer camps at Clemson, games were played on the rec fields behind the north stands of Death Valley in the mid to late 70's.

When I played at Clemson, starting with the 1981 season, we played and practiced at Riggs. I believe the rec fields were used until the team moved to Riggs in 1980.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

I think that is right, they played on the rec fields behind the North stands.

Coach would complain about chicken bones being on the field after a Sat. game and they would have to clean the field up before playing.

there would not have been cars on the baseball field. There was no access. Cars parked in front of Fike and where baseball stadium is today. There may have been a few squeezed in behind the Frat House.

forgotten about that game against UGA, which was during my junior year.

I was a member of the Cheerleading Squad and Editor of "The Tiger" that year, and several friends and I had dates drive from Winthrop for the weekend. They stayed in the home of Dr. and Mrs. J.B. Whitney, whose sons, Chuck and Rob, were Clemson students and close friends.

I recall now the pre-game hype, coverage in "The Tiger," and as a Cheerleader, leading a huge crowd from Tillman Hall to the game, while riding on a sideboard of an old car donated by Goody Thomas from Rock Hill. The excitement was abetted by the huge crowd across campus for the game...46,000 being a packed house in those days.

For a "dining out" treat we took our dates to a chicken place adjacent to the 76 bridge, the name of which I don't recall, but a greasy spoon, for sure. The girls were impressed enough that we were able to scrape up the money for the treat, but the rest of the weekend, Mrs. Whitney, ever the gracious hostess and knowing our constant shortage of CASH, provided meals.

Our loss to UGA was only mollified by the CDA dance that Saturday night...one in which my date p!ssed me off for acting like she was drunk, and by one heck of a breakfast at the Whitney's the next morning. lol
