Clemson baseball update of sorts

May 18, 2022, 12:17 PM

I see that Brandon posted where the Tigers are still considered in the NCAA Tournament by Baseball America but need to sweep BC this week. I spoke with Aaron Fitt of D1Baseball.com and he said he thinks Clemson is in the field as well, but needs to sweep BC.

Now, I know a lot of people have posted about staff changes and what will happen. I don't know, but I have a few guesses and I will gladly share them. I think that it's tourney or bust for the staff. That's been my impression since last summer (and you can't compare what was done with basketball with baseball because, whether you agree or disagree or whether you think it's right or wrong, the expectations are different). That impression has not changed based off of conversations I've had.

Now, what happens if they make the tourney and it's another early exit. You could see a staff shakeup (Matt Heath for Andrew See?). You could still see a major change. So the next few weeks will be interesting for sure.

Thanks for the update. Personally, I think

that's the interesting scenario. Clemson gets in, goes on the road in a regional, and goes 0-2 or 1-2. Because, they are really not good at all away from home.

Amazing the standard after 6 failed years

When Monte came, it was compete for ACC tourney crown and make super regional. He made 57 year history last year and now this year, we're going into the last weekend with a very remote possibility of not even getting into the ACC tournament, let alone compete for a championship.

Forget the Super regional this year, we're a bubble team at best just to make it in. Wake and Ga Tech are NOT good teams... Bottom 3rd of ACC, FSU isn't the powerhouse of old, they're in middle 3rd of ACC at best. That's our best and only decent series win.

Imo, it'd be a travesty to retain this staff for squeaking into a region and then early exit out.

Sounds like the OP is pulling for a coaching staff change purely hoping it will open up a few extra houses in Clemson to squat in

Will be interesting to see what effect, if any the ACC tournament has. Ga Tech and wake are both bubble teams. Also depends on other tournaments as well because of at large bids. Take coastal for instance, if they got upset in tourney, then wouldn't they get in and knock one other team out? Does 9 ACC teams go or does 10? ACC ooc play has been bad.

They will not take 10 , if 9 go it will be a record.

Yeah, I'm thinking 9 but there has been talk of 10 going based off rpi... Which imo is a joke. Wofford is NOT a top 25 rpi team.

There are not many reasons to keep CML and a lot to send him packing.

I don't think they fire Lee. I do think they make a Pitching Coach change for sure.

Why are the expectations different ?

Why aren't the expectations the same for both ? ie, Compete for the conference title each year , and be competitive in the real dance.

Settling for mediocrity has us where we are now.

In regards to Neff

May 18, 2022, 5:15 PM

I understand that the standard for baseball has been much higher than basketball over the last 50 years or so. The reality of Omaha was a part of the program that few doubted. Leggett got the program sliding and Lee has only greased the wheels. NOW that Neff has shown his cards with Brownell, will he do the same with Lee? I’m leaning towards “no” due the long term success of baseball…it’s not a revenue sport, but it is still a nationally recognized program and that is going to be the difference when Neff sends the pink slip to Lee, regardless of what happens in the next few weeks. I’m going to throw out a name from Coach Wilhelm’s era as a candidate: John Pawlowski. Tiger great who knows pitching and has solid SC roots as the coach of CofC and currently at W. KY.

Re: In regards to Neff

He preceded Lee at CofC, had only a marginally better record, then failed at Auburn. Clemson needs a coach that has proven they can get to Omaha.

If we wanna play and not faulted we gotta spend money. If not gotta get young energy with tiger blood. Nothing else.

I feel we need to win multiple games in the ACCT and at least make the final of a regional to keep Monte. He really should have a super by now so I would be fine if super or bust is the criteria. Hate it. I always liked Monte and really thought it was working after the first few years. But after the second choke at home as a national seed under Monte I really questioned whether he was the one and that was years ago. Hope our pitching catches fire somehow and we make a super.

tournament or bust is not a great position to have

May 18, 2022, 6:15 PM

because it seems to be ok with the standard slipping so low than barely getting into the field is considered good enough. Like yeah it's a better season than last year but still well below the historical average of Clemson baseball.

Re: tournament or bust is not a great position to have

May 18, 2022, 6:37 PM

It’s also not addressing the fact that he only has one year left on his contract. Even if he’s allowed to coach one more season what could he possibly do next year that would justify a new contract in the face of his body of work? Would a Super Regional mean we re-up for another 6 years. This crap is getting stupid.

Oh my, that’s a nightmare to think about. I’m sick of the idea of these contract extensions based off of a one season accomplishment. The body of work over the last 4 yrs says no way has he earned another long term deal.

Re: tournament or bust is not a great position to have

May 18, 2022, 7:01 PM

It’s my problem with Brownell too. This AD isn’t evaluating a body of work. They’re giving these coaches excessive opportunity then seizing the slimmest of reasons to give them extensions that are always coupled with gratuitous raises. By giving Brownell’s new assistant 2 year deals it’s all but guaranteed Brownell is back no matter what happens next year - which might be why there is suddenly no priority on landing anyone from the portal. It doesn’t matter anymore. They’ll just do it next year when it actually matters. Now Lee is gonna fire his pitching coach and if he FINALLY makes it out of regional we’ll guarantee he get the Brownell 12+ year treatment? They’re outright abusing the goodwill the football program has created.

Re: tournament or bust is not a great position to have

May 18, 2022, 8:24 PM

It should be super regional or bust. Squeaking in and winning 1 game or no games should not be enough

So barely making the tournament (maybe) after posting the worst season in 50 years is enough to keep a job?
