Would you take a HORRIBLE down year in exchange for a national title?

Jul 1, 2013, 9:33 PM

Yes or No? How about 3?4?5 bad years?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We had a losing season, followed by a blowout loss to WV

Jul 1, 2013, 9:36 PM

the next year. MNC this year!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I consider some of the Bowden years bad.

Jul 1, 2013, 9:47 PM

Does that count?

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

2001, 2004, 2006 come to mind.

Jul 1, 2013, 10:18 PM

Awful years IMO.

There's something in these hills.

Odd choices if you are being serious. 2002 was worse

Jul 1, 2013, 10:28 PM

than any of those. We did some good things in 01 (crazy win at GT) and 06 (gameday blowout of GT) and we finished above 500 in all of those seasons.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Team pretty well packed it in after that GT game though.

Jul 1, 2013, 11:57 PM

Yes, that night was filled with elation but it went away, quickly.

Auburn the last two seasons?

Jul 1, 2013, 10:30 PM

We haven't had a truly awful season in 15 years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No...

Jul 1, 2013, 10:35 PM

because if you have a terrible year followed by a NC then it looks like you cheated and if you win a NC followed by a "down" year then it looks like a fluke.

It's not really a choice. We are not going to win a national championship. Probably not beat UGA. Probably lose to Carolina again, and very possibly to Maryland. Not to mention N.C. State. Let's all take a deep breath, and get real.

Schizophrenia can be serious. You need to take that SCar

Jul 1, 2013, 10:43 PM

'sucker' out of your mouth. That's "real".

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So you think SCAR starts 0-2?

Jul 1, 2013, 11:22 PM [ in reply to Re: Would you take a HORRIBLE down year in exchange for a national title? ]

Are you also expecting to play NC State or Maryland in the music city bowl or something?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

Coot

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't see much "We" have in common

Jul 2, 2013, 6:04 AM [ in reply to Re: Would you take a HORRIBLE down year in exchange for a national title? ]

You may think "we" lose to Carolina and Georgia but based on the tone of your post and your pulse I can only gather your "we" is scu. That means North Carolia wins and the coots are in for a rough year. We all know that you and us are not a "we".

I agree we need to keep it real and grounded ( http://ryankantor.com/2013/06/30/keeping-expectations-realistic-clemson-may-never-lose-again/ ), but we're not losing to Maryland. We're going to be double digit favorites in 8 games this year. We'll be underdogs in two games.

I'm working on my predictions, but it looks like the most likely scenario, speaking objectively and using some advanced stats (a 1,000 season simulator) we're looking at about a 5% chance to run the table, 20% to get 11 wins and a really solid 25% to get 10 wins. So it's like a 50% shot we get 10 wins again and I'd say that's being conservative. I'll take that.

Now the people saying we're going to run the table probably need to cool it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think we actually have more like a 1% chance of running

Jul 2, 2013, 8:08 AM

the table and maybe a 5% chance of doing so if we beat UGA.

Still think it is possible with this group though...

Re: Would you take a HORRIBLE down year in exchange for a national title?

Jul 1, 2013, 11:12 PM

Let me put it to you this way.
Would you be willing to take 3,or 4 ,or 5 great years, saying beating the coots every year, the ACC Championship,a berth in the 4 NC playoffs but not winning it all?
Your question is moot because the great teams don't have to settle for a HORRIBLE down year. They may not win the natinal championship, but how many teams wouldn't settle for 10-2,or 11-1,a conference championship and a possible top 5 finish?

Re: Would you take a HORRIBLE down year in exchange for a national title?

Jul 1, 2013, 11:40 PM

This is an irrelavant question. Because after the 2013 season, you can't have a down year and expect to make it into the playoffs. The Horrible down year cannot come first. Injuries can create a horrible down year following a possible national champion season, but not likely during these times. Most strong teams are loaded with talent. That is why its good to be TOO DEEP.

What is the deal with WE (are) TOO DEEP? Seems like a grammatically stupid catch phrase.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who is in charge of this?

Jul 2, 2013, 8:24 AM

I might try negotiation or we might have to hire an arbitrator cause I think we have passed our worst times. Of course I'm 61 and don't expect to run out of good recruiting or coaching during the rest of my life.
