I've recently taken an interest in state geography.

Not really the landscape, but the locations of cities and towns, and the roads that connect them.
Like anything I take an interest in, the result is a mind-numbing Excel spreadsheet. I have a list of 499 cities/towns/communities in the state of South Carolina, which highways lead to them, how far away they are from my house, and how I would get there.
Do you have any questions? Any places you would like to ask about?

which is a call-in gardening show on SC PBS. When people would call and say they are from Wadmalaw, he'd respond 'Oh, right up hwy 45 past the old Guthrie Cotton Gin' or something.
Always had some comment on the location of the town or something/somebody in it. Was quite remarkable, and I don't think he had any spreadsheets of anything.

She's the historian from Rock Hill that had the PBS show Mary Long's Yesteryear. She was a friend of the family, and was associated with the Lost Colony production in Manteo for many years.

I see a Toogoodoo River and Road in Charleston County. Is this what you mean?
If so, you're gonna want to take SC-165 north out of Meggett. You'll want to get on US-17a north for a brief period before taking a left on SC-61 north. Then take SC-27 north until you get to US-78 just north of Ridgeville. Take US-78 west all the way to Branchville, then hang a right onto US-21 north. It'll take a while, but take that all the way into Rock Hill, then get on SC-5 going north. Take that into York, then get on US-321 north, and that will take you to Clover.

that you could either mount to your windshield, and input your destination, and then it'd tell you how to get where you're going.
IF (and it's a BIG if) that works out, they can start integrating them as built-in units w/ a car....or heck, since we're dreamin' big here, a smartphone app.

is not to help me get to places, but to help me learn where the places are. Tracing the highways on a map does that, not punching things into a GPS.
If ever actually went to a place, I would not use my spreadsheet. LOL

I only found one that you can't get to by car only. That is Daufuskie Island, just southwest of Hilton Head Island. You have to take a ferry from Hilton Head to get there.
Because of this, it takes longer to get to Daufuskie Island from my house, than any other residential place in the state.

software, most of the time it's pretty intuitive. You used to be able to get all of the state data for free, I want to say we used to pull it from DNR's website but I can't recall exactly. Anyway, you could map streams, creeks, topography, interstates, pretty much anything you wanted. I'd like to get some myself, I always enjoyed using it in college. I still have some pretty cool maps of the upstate.

The US-123 south to just before you get into Clemson. Hang a left on Issaqueena Trail and then a left on SC-28 at Mac's Drive In. That takes you to Pendleton.

You need to make a table of every town and a list of all adjacent towns with the miles and hwy number for each town. Then you could use network theory to find the shortest distance from any town to another

I did not recognize as having visited or at least driven through. That's not to say I haven't driven through, and may not have known. I've driven over a half-million miles in SC over the past 15 years. I'm on my third car now. I have been inside every county courthouse in this great state as well. All 46 of them. I can also rattle off all 46 counties in alphabetical order off the top of my head thanks to my 5th grade music teacher drilling a song into my head where we sang all the counties to the tune of Yankee Doodle.

probably Mountain Rest to Little River, from the northwestern corner of the state to the northeastern corner.
To do it, you gotta get from Mountain Rest to Greenville, which takes you through Clemson, and then take the standard route to the beach down through Columbia and Florence. Zoom on past North Myrtle on highway 17.
