Tony Horne, Justin Miller, and CJ Spiller are the dynamic

Jan 14, 2016, 3:33 PM

return men that I can remember. Jacoby Ford was good to but those other 3 were elite. Does anyone remember any others that we had at Clemson?

I still don't understand how Sammy Watkins wasn't one.

Jan 14, 2016, 3:34 PM

Maybe lack of vision/aggressiveness?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe he wasn't on the level of the others mentioned, but

Jan 14, 2016, 3:36 PM

he was pretty dynamic.

Changed the momentum in the MD game several years back. 2011 I believe.

never seemed to have much luck, except for maybe the Maryland game, as a return guy.

He had trouble finding the holes. On the Maryland return he had about a 30 yard gap to run through and it became all about speed instead of vision. We know he had elite speed.

if I remember right....

Sammy Watkins was a great returner his freshman year

He was 1st team All-American as "Returner" his Freshman year

According to AP and SI.

I think they pulled him off because didn't want to take any chances with injury.

He had directional speed. He was never wiggle fast.***

Andre Ellington

Jan 14, 2016, 3:42 PM

not only did he return several kicks for TDs himself but if you watch closely on a lot of Spiller's big returns Ellington was his lead blocker and Spiller followed Ellington in to the hole for one final block.

Being a great kick returner is about vision and speed and Ellington had elite vision and pretty good speed too.

Vision is definitely what held Sammy back. We currently don't have any guys returning kicks with elite speed or vision. Ray Ray is the closest I saw this year but became a liability when he fumbled a few times and then got hurt.

Not sure why, but seems to be part of his design to jist secure and give the O the ball.

Justin won a new Chrysler 300 for a lady in Lancaster by returning the second half kickoff for a TD. She lives in my daughter's neighborhood and still drives it.
