Brad Brownell / What I am hearing
Mar 11, 2022, 12:04 PM
|
|
I know everyone has opinions on what should happen with head basketball coach Brad Brownell, and I've been talking to sources and trying to figure out what is going to happen. As of right now, I don't think the school is going to make a move in another direction. Brownell was signed to a contract extension back in October, and it goes through 2026. There is a buyout right now of $50,000 per month through the remainder of the contract, and I think that comes out to around $2.4 million. Everything I am hearing is that a move won't be made by the school and that we should hear something official by next week.
Now, that doesn't mean that Brownell can't make a decision on his own. I haven't heard anything that would suggest that, but just throwing it out there that he can make a decision different from the school.
That's what we've heard and I will let you know if I hear different.

You are not correct on the buyout
Mar 11, 2022, 12:12 PM
|
|
it is
The following are the buyout numbers:
Termination in contract year 5/1/21 – 4/30/22: $50,000 per month remaining Termination in contract year 5/1/22 – 4/30/23: $65,000 per month remaining Termination in contract year 5/1/23 - 4/30/24: $85,000 per month remaining Termination in contract year 5/1/24 – 4/30/25: $125,000 per month remaining Termination in contract year 5/1/25 – 4/30/26: $250,000 per month remaining
So... If he gets fired March 2022 he is owed $50,000 * 50 months = $2,500,000 If he gets fired March 2023 he is owed $65,000 * 38 months = $2,470,000 If he gets fired March 2024 he is owed $85,000 * 26 months = $2,210,000 If he gets fired March 2025 he is owed $125,000 * 14 months = $1,750,000
So there is ZERO financial gain to keep him around for another year to toil in mediocrity vs firing him this second, which is what should and needs to happen!

If these are true, it looks as advantageous to let him go now than any other time in the future.
Sucking this bad should require change, but only if there is plausible reason to assume the next person will do better. Don't just do it to do it. We need the right guy for Clemson

I don’t think He was trying to be precise. He was just speaking In generalities! You on the other hand came across as someone who likes to show how much He knows.. that’s putting it nicely.

Yeah, Jeff Borzello from espn just reported that insiders are saying now the job will not likely open up now after the 5 game winning streak.
Now, maybe Brad wants out like you reported, but who knows?
There are chances maybe he wants a new start somewhere else.

Not accurate….

We actually won games without both of them….mainly against other cellar dwellers. Hall played several games while Tyson was out that we lost. We were not in a good position even before the Tyson injury. This team did not get it done this season…bottom line. This team lost multiple games at full strength and had very few notable wins.

False. PJ Hall played every game during that stretch.

He played 1 minute in the loss to Louisville, which was the last game of that stretch. He averaged over 30 minutes per game during the losing streak.
He missed most of the loss to Louisville on February 19th and then all of the wins against Wake Forest, Boston College, and Georgia Tech. He returned for limited minutes for the win against Virginia Tech March 5th.

I agree. I think that might be just an excuse. Neff just might need more time as the top AD to see how things go. But a lame reason just because they had a winning streak. Think it might also be a star like PJ Hall coming back. Needs to be judged on whole body of work. Who know why might happen when Brad meets with Neff on the season review in a few weeks.

Surprised he's not better prepared to do his job. Remember how quickly Dabo went about changing the culture of Clemson football? Dude was totally prepared and had a tremendous sense of urgency to be great.

Make a decision on his own? Ha, Clownell knows nobody major program their right mind would hire him. Clemson basketball is his last stop, he’s gonna ride it off into the sunset as long as the administration will keep him around and be happy with finishing 6 to 10 in the conference every year…

Yeah, but he might to go to a lower level mid major type job. Some coaches just get tired of not being liked by a lot of the fan base. Turgeon resigned in the middle of season at Maryland and their are rumors might take a job at a lower level.

it will be yet another clear indication of the priority level university administration places on the hoops program. Apparently, they're all content with mediocrity and only making the NCAA tournament twice in the last eleven years. It's abundantly clear that the expression "best is the standard" is only lip service at least as it pertain to both men's and wimminz basketball.

Would think that w/out a contract extension next year Brownell would be a little bit hamstrung w/ regards to recruiting.
IMHO this is the year to make a change, down year in ACC, new regimes at UNC and next year at Duke. Of course battling other openings could be a challenge in bringing in someone new.
Nothing against Brad, just seems BB has become stale and each game is like deja vu all over again.

I tbink a lot of it comes down to Neff being on the job just a couple of months. He is trying to learn as much as he can about all of his responsibilities. If he was here longer think he would be wanting his guy at the program. I do think if the goal of not making the NCAAT next season is not met, they will go their separate ways.

possibility of Brownell resigning himself a few weeks ago. I don't know if he will, but I have no doubt that he is a good, honest man of high integrity, and he has to know that he has taken this program as far as he can take it and done all he can possibly do at Clemson. I could actually see him moving into some other role in the athletic department. Clearly the university has totally given up on basketball if he is retained another year, which was already evident, I guess, but every additional year is just salt in the wound.

Why would a AD increase the buyout of a coach that needs to be fired , only for the the same A.D. to bolt for another job that will be competing against the previous mentioned over compensated coach.

If true, and I suspect it is, it is a really sad comment on the administration's commitment to the basketball program. Which is zero.

What do you think the chances are that Brad wants to move on and try something else. Maybe the university knows something we don't. I agree with you though, seems pretty sad to keep dragging this on.

The simple solution is…….
pay a former professional entertainer from Tiger Tails $50 to slip into Brads office when he’s taking his 1-4pm nap, have the entertainer begin to perform just as the Clemson video department is filming another episode of “a day in the life of Brad” .
Offer Brad the opportunity to resign with no buyout and he gets most of the copies of the video and he can keep the entertainer

Clearly, it is way past time to give someone else a shot. Brad did his best, but never moved the needle. I sent a letter to both iptay and Graham Neff expressing my hopes that Clemson should show that we care about basketball. Not making a move, clearly tells us their stance. Not expecting it to change his opinion, but I needed to get it off my chest. Neffg at Clemson.edu if you are inclined.

called ad dept and spoke to neffs assistant. she said they have been fielding numerous emails and phone calls this week. says neff actually does read emails - for what it’s worth. she gave me his email and we talked for a bit. he called her while we were on phone. heard her say “fielding tons” - now, that could be code for something very different. but, my guess is that it was in regards to this “vanilla” program.
told her obviously i feel program is stale and stagnant (wash, rinse, repeat) - first time not going to lj since - well, can’t even remember. can’t believe how cool she was. very understanding and says that is the crux of the calls and emails and neff is reading and may respond. not holding breath on that one - he’s a busy dude. she spoke very highly of neff. again, just a 10 minute phone call, but you could tell in her kindness that she is dealing with a lot of resignation and concern. she was very empathetic and genuinely wanted feedback and is concerned. but, i also know that’s her job. she sat on the phone asking questions so i find that extremely cool.
so, who knows…. maybe he’ll show some backbone and step away.

I sent him an email after we lost 3 straight to UNC, Duke and Notre Dame and he emailed back. I've had great interactions with him so far. Seems like a great guy and you could tell it was actually his response.

The thing that hurts is that this is the time to go get a better coach because the ACC is at an all time low. You are giving other ACC schools chances to let go of their coach before Clemson does and get the better coaches first. Also, some ACC schools have already hired up and coming coaches at programs that were bellow Clemson. Steve Forbes at Wake Forest, and Earl Grant are off to great starts in building a winning culture, and recruiting. Earl Grant's had a a very impressive ACC Tournament winning two games, and has a top 20 recruiting class coming in next season. What is it going look like when Earl Grant, Brad's former assistant surpasses Clemson as a program at BC?

What a bunch of negative garbage. Like the torch crowd in a Frankenstein movie wanting to claim a victim at all costs. I don't support the program, not going to support the program, hate the coach, hate the uniforms, hate the popcorn, not ever going back to LJ, blah, blah, blah. In the grand scheme of things, all of the negative spewing on here just doesn't matter. If you don't want to support the program that's your choice. But if that's your approach, you obviously don't care about Clemson. And I dare say none of you, absolutely none of you, would say the crap you say on this board to CBB's face. You all hide behind a keyboard.

I signed my name to my letter to Neff and wouldn’t hesitate for him to share my concerns with the coach. I would be happy to speak directly with Coach Brownell if the opportunity arose.

I’m curious. What was the content of the letter to Neff?
What would you say in your “private meeting” with Coach Brownell?
What foundation would you rely upon to obtain this meeting?
Thanks. I find this fascinating.

I have never understood the “you wouldn’t say it to their face “ crowd. My question is , why wouldn’t I.
If I walked up to you and called you everything I could think of, what happens. Are you saying there would be violence?
Again, , your saying if i told Brad he needs to be replaced, he would hit me? Have me rubbed out? Would he call an ill-advised timeout and send 6 players out of a huddle as opposed to the required 5 and receive a technical?
I need to know what happens!

It’s sad that we’re okay with being mediocre. Coach Brownell’s record speaks for itself. He’s been here long enough and it’s time for a change. We need fresh blood to lead the program.

Brownell will be back next year. He has the nucleus to have a decent team next year. However, does anyone truly expect after 12 years, BB is suddenly going to develop the charisma and salesmanship to go into the home of an outstanding HS player and sell himself, the school and how the kid can be the one or two kids to change the entire dynamic. Can he bring in the equivalent of a CJ Spiller or Sammy Watkins?
I don't. He is who he is. Until we hire a coach who has a dynamic personality and can win over the kids and their moms and dads, we will continue to be mediocre with the occasional good year. Recruiting is every bit as important as X's and O's.
It's time to hire a young, smart and dynamic coach willing to go hard into homes and improve the quality of the player we bring into the BB program.
Why after 12 years does anyone expect BB to do just that? It's just not who he is. He has been given a very long leash. He has been fairly treated. The status quo will result in just that, except maybe next year we have a little run and then back to being in the back end of the ROY bus.

First of All, what is the value of "Winning" to Clemson? Next as a proud Tiger Class of 82' and father/father in law of classes of 2009 & 2010 (2), I loved watching all the Greats come to Clemson (Jordan, Worthy, all of Duke). I was at Clemson when Tree Rollins was there. My son class of 10' chose Winning over alma mater loyalty and actually sat in student section with his Duke apparel on and actually was caught on ESPN a couple of times. The point here is "Winning", we had No Clue Dabo would turn out to be the Winner and now Legend he is, but we did what we had to for Winning sake. So answer me this? Is Clemson University/Brand better off today because we paid the buyout to separate Bowden from Clemson? I think All In folks know the answer! We are at the same crossroads, Brownell Must Go! $2.5M is nothing to Clemson, heck if needed borrow it from Dabo. Better yet Double Dabo's salary and let him coach BB too. I guarantee you Dabo would have Won the other night against VA Tech. Absolutely unforgivable up 2 points with 6.7 seconds and you don't full court press and/or foul to make them beat you (actually tie) at the foul line. We must choose Winning! Winning will cover a measly $2.5M Furthermore, if Brownell really cares about his players, he will negotiate an Amiable exit. Again I Say Choose Winning!!!

Well guess we are I stuck with him. Please no more extensions. No one is beating down our door for Brownell. Just let him coach out his contract or at least until 2024. Then we should be able to afford the buy out.
