Degrees for Jocks? I noticed most...

Feb 8, 2014, 9:52 AM

of our players that seen to be more "phonetically" challenged major in Sociology. I don't even remember that major existing when I was an athlete there in the late 80s. Most of the Automotins that were on the Football and Basketball teams back then studied either Industrial Arts (no idea what that was) or PRTM (another total embarrassment of a major).

I'm not really even sure what kind of real job someone can obtain with a Sociology degree. I guess you can go on to graduate school and eventually become a Sociology Professor.

Remember that we also have the College of Education and "Coloring" for those who wish to find another path of least resistance.

a Sociology degree, which is offered at a lot of colleges.

There are a lot of jobs you can get with a Sociology Major.

Feb 8, 2014, 9:57 AM

Believe it or not, not everybody does a "professional" major in college.

With a sociology degree and she has yet to find a job related to her degree. Hard to disagree with u on that one. She found a teaching job but its nothing related to sociology.

Uh ... same post 4 times ??? Technically challenged?

Feb 8, 2014, 2:29 PM

Seriously though ... the premise of your original post is ridiculous.

Are some degrees more rigorous than others? Of course. Does that mean that the less rigorous degree is not worthwhile?

No sir, it does not.

Are there bogus classes and made-up degrees at some schools specifically designed to help athletes gain entrance and keep them eligible. Almost certainly, but Sociology and PTRM are not among them.

BTW ... there is no such thing as an "Ex Yankee" ...

Same with History. You can get a degree, but there is in no

Feb 8, 2014, 1:40 PM

way the certainty of a job, at least without a masters or phd. The sad thing is that the professors lobby against the legislation that would require them to tell students the data on % grads getting a job. Talk about protecting your own rear. If the major is not a way for a student to move towards a job, why have it, or at least why take so many students into it each year.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's easy to find out the number of jobs available to….

Feb 8, 2014, 2:29 PM

certain degree holders. All it takes is a simple search on the internet. If somebody is smart enough to get a degree from Clemson, then they are smart enough to know what kind of jobs will be available to them right out of college.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Same with History. You can get a degree, but there is in no

Feb 8, 2014, 6:42 PM [ in reply to Same with History. You can get a degree, but there is in no ]

I dunno, I graduated as a double major in History and English and quickly found a job working in financing. Did that for a few years, market shifted, worked as a carpenter for a few, now I'm about to take the bar exam after graduating from law school (in only 2.5 years if I can toot my own horn for a second). My choice would not have been any different if I was told only x% of people in this major got a job. Heck, I just finished law school, that is proof enough of that!

Unless you want to be a specific professional, any major from a school like Clemson, especially if you earn good grades will open doors for you. There's no certainty of a job in any degree, and in my opinion, going to college (or gaining any education) to solely get a job upon graduating is missing out on an experience to explore a field and immerse yourself in your interests.

Oh, and my wife was a Sociology major at Clemson. She is currently the director of admissions for a national entity that places high functioning autistic and asperger's kids into colleges across the country and supplements their higher education with life skills coaching. She has worked as a licensed mental health counselor at various residential schools, dealing with conduct based kids, sex offenders, and kids all along the autism spectrum, and prior to that worked for the state of South Carolina in a program that helped early childhood educators with access to higher education.

CLIFFS: It doesn't matter what you major in, you won't get a job unless you go get one, you can't just wait for one to drop into your lap because you're special. Nothing is certain.

I have never used either of them yet do pretty well financially. Often it doesn't matter what your degree is in just that you've got one. For the guys who make it to the NFL, it matters even less what their degree is in.

PRTM majors I know had, or are having, great careers.

Feb 8, 2014, 10:02 PM

You seem to be quite judgmental. It often has more to do with the individual than the major.
