Venables happy at Clemson, not shopping himself around

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables is arguably the nation's best assistant coach, but his value to the program goes deeper than game day. Full Story »

Why is this even a thing every year?

Nov 9, 2016, 1:55 PM

Asking him about that every season will have him thinking he's wrong in the way he's thinking

Just give the man a really big raise and make it cost prohibitive for anyone to hire him away. He should definitely be the highest paid coordinator in the country.
It's not like he isn't worth it and where are you going to find anyone better?.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just pay him 5 million a year

Nov 9, 2016, 2:36 PM

and he'd make more than most head coaches anyway

Because other teams need good coaches every year

Nov 10, 2016, 6:26 AM [ in reply to Why is this even a thing every year? ]

And he is obviously a prime candidate with the success he's having here. It's just part of the job to get asked about it.k

I've said for years and will continue to say that we need to pay Brent Venables whatever it takes to keep him here for a long, long time.

Gotta respect and love coach BV. Best hire by Dabo and hope he is on Clemson sidelines for many years to come. Players want to play for him and we will continue to get elite players with him here at Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dear BV, we're glad to have you and wouldn't trade you

for anybody in the nation. You are the best at what you do and we appreciate all that you do.

Its a thing every year because other schools want what we have committed, fun loving, sincere coaches. You just can't go to wal mart and buy that. I hope we don't see the day where Dabo wants a change or nick saban retires and he gets a call from Alabama that's the only place I see him even thinking about leaving Clemson if he does we can only hope that Venables is here to take the lead.

I really hope he will end up being Dabo's Bud Foster***

I agree 100%. Dabo and Brent are four and five star magnets. They know where to go and how to recruit. Then they know how to teach. Finally, they are spectacular on game day- before, during and post game. And they seem to be doing a spiffy job in dealing with the media and building the facilities. Can't overlook their absolute insistence that players keep up with their studies (however thin the load may be) and stay out of trouble. Those who float outside these parameters usually find themselves floating away from Clemson. :) The two quite simply are the total package! Hope they stay for years to come.

now THIS makes me happy.***

What does he want to do post-coaching?

Nov 9, 2016, 2:54 PM

Now that would make for an interesting article.

Exactly. My first career a million years ago was as a journalist and if I'd come back from that interview leaving that question unasked, I'd still be picking teeth out of my ### from the chewing.

That was my thought. Any smart reporter would have asked a follow up on that one.

A great coach like Dabo is a wonderful catch, when you make it. Coach V. Is every bit as wonderful.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We all have got to thank Dabo for...

Nov 9, 2016, 9:51 PM

creating this kind of environment for players and coaches. There is no other place in the land that can match us in this department.

I can't even imagine ugly situations like in Florida, Texas, or Tennessee will ever happen to us as long as this coaching staff is here. It seems Dabo is always in control of the program.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Let's think outside the box and make BV

Nov 10, 2016, 12:30 AM

Co-head coach in charge of defense or something, or call Dabo head coach and director of offense and BV simply director of defense. Make the pay nearly equal. Let's keep him for the long term.

Nov 10, 2016, 8:17 AM

Went to the TexasTech game. Many of the fans there think BV is coming home. They said he'd make 4-5ml.

We will see.

Re: I was in Manhattan in October

Nov 10, 2016, 8:43 AM

That's interesting. Although I don't see Big 12 schools hiring a defensive mind as their head coach. They usually stick to the offensive gurus. Texas bucked the trend with Charlie Strong and the ###### is still being written. Stoops was hired in a time before the proliferation of the spread offense. But you cane never underestimate the power of going home...just ask Lebron. :) I believe Venables will be here for years to come. He's one of the top paid assistant coaches without all of the duties that Dabo has to deal with in regards to media obligations and dealing with boosters.

I say pay him the 4-5 mil or whatever it takes to keep him in tigertown. When the time comes and God forbid, Dabo steps down or leaves, the job is his. Whew, don't even want to think about either one of them leaving... loving this too much !!!
