Winning in Athens

Aug 5, 2014, 9:20 PM

The section below from a post today on AJC.com makes me think even more that Georgia is going to rely very heavily on Gurley and Marshall. Between injuries and graduation, they have some holes at both Wide Receiver and Tight End. If we can shut down their running game, we will be in good shape.

"The one bit of good news on the injury front was that tight end Jay Rome didn’t suffer a major setback when he left practice after hobbling off the field on Sunday. Rome, who had foot surgery last December, was back on the field on Monday. Nevertheless, tight ends coach John Lilly great reservations about the junior’s ability to contribute as significantly early in the season as the Bulldogs had hoped. “You have to be a little concerned with his conditioning and how ready he’s going to be when we play in less than a month,” Lilly said after Monday’s practice. “He just hasn’t practiced much, He’s been out some, and he’s not able to go some. It’s hard to evaluate a guy when that’s the case. But it’s a process. We’re not playing tomorrow, so we’ll see.”
Georgia’s situation behind Rome is pretty precarious because nobody else has played. Redshirt freshman Jordan Davis and converted fullback Quayvon Hicks would appear to be the next in line. But the Bulldogs brought in freshman signee Jeb Blazevich, who has been impressive in the early going, and got a late addition in converted basketball player Joseph Ledbetter, who transferred in from Pfifer University. “It could end up being any of them right now, quite frankly,” Lilly said."

Dawgs not an elite team. Beat a mediocre coot team last

Really? Coots not an elite team? Why are you trying so hard not to let people know you're a coot? They finished 11-2 and ranked #4 in the country it was the best finish in school history for the coots, you should be proud.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That #4 ranking is misleading

Aug 5, 2014, 11:16 PM

They avoided having to play in their conference championship and they played a cupcake bowl game. They got #4 by default because a bunch of teams ahead of them played tough opponents and lost.

I dont know exactly who will be there on Aug 30th...

Aug 5, 2014, 10:10 PM

but they do have a very good group of WRs. Mason is a decent enough qb to get them the ball. I hope we can keep their running game at bay, but Gurley is a grown man and you only do so much.

Re: I dont know exactly who will be there on Aug 30th...

Aug 5, 2014, 10:31 PM

It may come down to which team can get the most out of their running game. Both defenses will probably sell out against the run and force the "rookie" QBs to produce.

Gurley and Marshall last year combined for 200 yds and 3 TDs. Yeah were gonna get a heavy dose of gurshall but if we don't turn the ball over and limit their big plays we will win.

You had to read the article to know that?

UGA has the best backfield in college football
It's safer for a new QB to hand-off than pass
Clemson's D will be strongest against the pass

If Rome isnt healthy, then we will rely on youth at TE (Hicks, Davis, or 5* Blazevich).

However, we have plenty of depth at WR even if Mitchell and/or Scott-Wesley are not healthy.

Michael Bennett - SR (playing since FR)
Chris Conley - SR (playing since FR)
Rumph - SR - (JUCO ... 2nd year in system)
Reggie Davis - SO (played a lot last year)
Charlie Hegedus - JR Transfer from NC State

...and young-ens...
Blake Tibbs
Brendan Langley
Isiah McKenzie
etc.

Now Mikey you should know no one outside of clemson is allowed to stockpile talent. All of the tigers freshmen WRs are going to be all-conference yet our upper classmen have zero potential....nevermind that 4000 yards worth of receptions return.

Georgia is 16-1 in home openers since 1997.

Guess it's about time to make it 16-2 ! Go Tigers.

When we beat UGA

Aug 6, 2014, 9:56 AM

They will all just say UGA must be over rated.

Beat FSU and we will be on permenant Heather Dinich upset alert for the entire year.

I think this may be the best team we have had in years. No flash (yet) but we are very solid and deep at every position.

I actually think Gurley and Brendon Douglas will be their offense, and Marshall won't have the impact that we might expect. I think Douglas is under-rated by many teams.

To be honest - I'm more worried about their new DC than I am any of their players save Gurley. We stop Gurley and the Dwag O will be on life-support.

Re: Winning in Athens

It's full steam ahead for Marshall as well. Since tearing his ACL last year at Tennessee, Marshall's dedication to his rehab has got him back to doing everything McClendon wants him to do.

There are no limitations.

"Keith's doing everything," said McClendon.

"He's looked good. My expectations are going to be the same expectations that I had for him before any of this stuff went on," McClendon added.

With Crawford out, who do you guys expect to be your front 4?

Vic, Jarrett, ?, ?

I think your DL is quick and will get after the QB on passing downs, but do not think they are necessarily built to consistently stop our power running game. LB help will be essential.

But like most games, it will be won or lost in the trenches...gonna be a good one.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's where Anthony and our safeties will step in

Aug 6, 2014, 10:32 AM

We are pretty deep an every position on D this year, so I don't see your RB's busting off huge gains this year. The only way that happens is if your passing game lights it up, and I am not sure I see that happening. I think it will be a close game and lower scoring than last season. Maybe something in the 24-21 range.

Nobody expects it to happen to their defense (just like I didnt expect Swann to bounce off Sammy last year when he took it to he house)

I am interested to see how we attack your defense to be honest. Rumor has it Mason will run more hurry-up than we really ran with Murray and we REALLY started to get very effective to passing to our RBs out of the backfield last year. (Gurley had almost 500 yards receiving).

With multiple home run threats at RB in Gurley, Marshall, and Sony...hard to imagine they wont break a few.

Vic, Jarret, Williams, Lawson.....Crawford out has no affect on the constant pressure your QB will have on him.

Seriously, are Georgia fans that obsessed with Clemson ?

So for my early pick on the final score I will go with:

Clemson 24

Stalkers 14
