Darla Moore is every Gamecock fan

“The deepest regret of my life is the effort and resources I have expended on your behalf.” Darla Moore

Can we get a billboard with this quote on it in Columbia pronto.

She had a better saying just after she donated her first $25 million. It was reported that she phoned her late husband saying, "I think I just p---ed 25 million dollars down a rat hole."

I was present when she put her name on the business school - was in the international business program at the time. She gave a speech outside the business admin building and told the crowd she got her name on the building at a bargain price.

I'm proud of my degree there -- still one of the top programs in the country all these years later -- but seems she's plowed a lot of bad money after good in the intervening years.

Oh well.

What it really shows is the thoughtlessness of those at the top of the university ...... board and administration. She has found out what many of us already know ....... you are only valuable to them when you continue to give. Giving just gets you more invitations to give and when you stop, you are dead to them. Unfortunately this is true at just about every university.

Apr 7, 2021, 12:36 AM

First off sorry for her loss.
Now why would anyone think putting money into that ghetto would make difference or have them care about you? It’s almost as bad as buying a $1M hen statue and calling it rooster. Shoot there’s tons of land around that campus she could/should buy up to make it a nicer area instead of throwing money at a school that doesn’t give a #### about anyone. I remember going to the state championship game a few years back when Hillcrest played and beat Dutch Fork in 2014. I parked at some rundown warehouse that looked abandoned and hoped my truck wouldn’t be sitting on cinderblocks and gutted by the time I was leaving.

Apr 7, 2021, 7:15 AM

All of the comments over on that SEC board paint her as some entitled witch. But, she's got a point. If I loan my brother a $1000, I at least expect a Christmas card. I couldn't imagine parting with $75M and not getting some flowers when my mother died.

Somebody in that administration dropped the ball and they'll be losing their job over it.

Holy cow. Donating $75,000,000 and not getting condolences for your mother's passing is not expecting something in return. It's expecting to dealt with as a minimally polite person should.

I'm sure Darla couldn't give a rat's #### what you think. Right now she couldn't give a rat's #### what the USC administration thinks.

Money being fungible, every dollar she no longer puts into USC is another dollar USC has to find, for instance, for its football program.

Someone donates $75M and your response is "Okay, but don't expect us to GAS if your mom dies...it's a 'donation' after all."

That's borderline inhuman.

Not that it would ever happen but if that tone, or anything near it, came out of the UofSC administration not only would you never see a penny from her, I'd wager that some other bigtime donors would question if UofSC considers them a critical part of their success, or just a cash piñata.

Really, thanks for that. A Clemson troll could not have done a better job.

Shocker Biggie is spewing inaccurate information.

The buyout reduction was dependent on the hiring of a RB coach. When that same RB decided to coach in the NFL instead, there wasn’t a valid agreement to reduce the buyout.

2003 — $10 million to the School of Education at Clemson University; the university has renamed the school the Eugene T. Moore School of Education in honor of her father, a Clemson alumnus and former teacher, coach, and principal in Lake City;[22] Darla Moore’s gift to Clemson’s education program and the legacy of her father pushed for the start of a Creative Inquiry Program at Clemson University in the fall of 2013 called the Moore Scholars Program. The purpose of this program is for education students at Clemson University to participate in case studies and research regarding underprivileged schools and students.

Re: Darla Moore is every Gamecock fan

Apr 7, 2021, 1:04 PM

Darla earned everything she has. She came from an ordinary family, earned an MBA, got hired at Chemical Bank in New York and basically invented chapter 11 debtor in possession financing as we know it. I know this because I practiced in the New York City bankruptcy bar from the mid 80s and Darla was at Chemical Bank at the time. She was a tough cookie and she made a boatload of money for the bank. She understood and was among the first to realize that lending to a bankrupt business was not risky but was in fact lucrative and almost riskless. That being said, I guarantee you that Darla had to put up with a lot of baloney being a woman.

I am sure that Darla could barely contain the contempt she must have for a bunch of tea-drinking effete college administrators who had never worked 48-hour weekends in their lives in order to benefit her alma mater, USC. Her contempt is now being justified for all to see.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Darla Moore is every Gamecock fan

Apr 7, 2021, 1:22 PM

I agree with you but I have been on that college administrator side and sorry, but I bet nearly everyone has worked 48 hour weekends, if not back to back to back full working weekends. I have done it (part of the reason I am not doing it now - because the pay does not equate to the effort demanded) Goes for those coots too, but they have lower standards, not lower hours.

Her frustration was that the coots are treating her as a source of income. At that level and her level of involvement with the university, they should know better to at least say something. The fact that Clemson did says volumes.

Re: Darla Moore is every Gamecock fan

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Darla Moore is every Gamecock fan

Apr 8, 2021, 8:56 AM

I am not discrediting Darla's work ethic, I agree with you there. My point is that your hot-take on a college admin is surprising off-target.

I said I did it. The 80+ hour weeks and full weekend work days. They would daisy chain so 21 days straight was not completely uncommon. Because when you are a college administrator dealing with "emergencies" there is no down time and the university never really closes. Residence Hall offline, off-campus "camp" acting a fool, BOT on campus, student crisis, academic building move. It all adds up. It is called being essential, so if I was not there, it did not happen. However, you still have to deal with the other everyday stuff, org meetings, athletics, committees. My "student" to staff member ratio was the highest for our peer institution so I was literally doing three jobs compared to my peers, not only that, but I had an extra 2,500 non-student bit of population to deal with, plus up to the 10,000+ random folks on campus at any time. So yeah, it was a lot of full days starting at 7am, plus weekends, plus all the calls to report to campus for X, Y, & Z. When I left, I left months of comp time on the table, sure if I go back to the state, I can recoup but I have to do that within a 4 year windows so less than likely.

You always have dead weight in any organization, colleges too but there more folks hustling than you think. Worse, schools expect you (their employee) to fall on their swords so to speak because you should want to work more (for less) and we call that the University discount.

The two hardest working folks I have run into during my time in higher education was an Assistant Prof setting up her research center and the assistant police chief. They put in more hours than any private sector person I have seen. That includes growing up in the corporate marketing world and many of my family being in the medical profession.

In my "spare" time, I volunteer to do service to my community. I am not about the wine-and-whine crowd for "fundraising". I rather get my hands dirty and help the less fortunate. Depending on the season that is often about 20-40 hours a month, depending. Along with school volunteer work, I do my service. A bit less since covid, etc. I won't fault folks from doing the fundraising work but it isn't my preference for service.
