Danny Pearman does NOT coach the kickoff team...

Jan 15, 2016, 9:11 AM

The various special teams are shared by various assistants. Please quit spewing misinformation. Ultimately it is the head coach's job to fix this but great kickers dont grow on trees...

It is mind boggling the number of times that this has been posted and yet people still don't understand that he doesn't coach special teams. The blame falls on those coaches, Dabo and the players. There were only 2 other teams who were worse than we were on ST last year. It cost us the title. Watch the film on bama. They are number 1 in that area. Watch the film and keep watching it until they figure it out.

When a position group is "coached by committee" that may as well be no coach at all, in my opinion. Someone, a singlular person, has to be accountable. I understand we are limited in the number of coaches a team can have but attention must be given to Special teams, they are a major reason we aren't the 2015 National Champions. So, Danny, Brent, Dabo, Jeff, Tony, Marion, Robbie or whoever, fix this so we won't be holding our breath all next year everytime our ST takes the field.

I mentioned this before and nobody has a logical response. ST us coached by committee. Don't think for one second that Dabo, Venables and Mike Reed all didn't have a hand in game planning the kickoff team. It's lunacy.

Pearlman is the coordinator for special teams, venables and hobby specifically coach the kickoff teams. Regardless whomever coached special teams this year and didn't make any adjustments when we struggled against easy opponents, lost the title Monday. While they can only have 9 coaches on staff, someone different needed to step in with just how many extra points we missed this year let alone coverage collapses. I would think the st coordinators job is to do so if he noticed what caused it, but how can he go and be like hey Brent you suck at kickoffs even though your my boss and all. If someone did step in mid season when this was first highly noticeable, they need to go as far away from st as possible.
Who knows what really happened, it sounds like a cluster f, and the blame is spread all over in a awkward dynamic of who does what(sounds like the issue right there) I think now we need to hire a special teams coach as a priority and have him coach a position on the side. It's been a problem for us long enough that it's getting ridiculous.

Bama, like most teams, has the same setup. Bobby Williams is the coordinator, but the various phases are divided up. For years, we struggled there also and I heard the same remarks about Williams as I've read here about Danny. Several years ago, Saban ruled that ST would be made mostly of first stringers, along with some younger players on their ways to becoming first stringers, obviously a tactic not without some risk. For example, Drake was running back 1a, getting about a third of the carries, until he broke his leg last year and his arm this year, forcing them to rely on Henry. Humphrey, the one who caught the onside, is a first string corner back and former five star recruit. (His father is former All American and Denver Bronco running back, Bobby Humphrey.) Our ST play has improved dramatically over the last several years. BTW, when Danny was the TE and ST coach at Bama, he got cussed much the same as here...

quozzel's an idgit, that doesn't even know the difference

between the 2 and the 5, yet there's a board of goobers[$1 to derp] that believes he does.

He's the coordinator. If our D drops to 116 in the country

Jan 15, 2016, 10:10 AM

next year, who would you hold responsible? The coordinator or one of the position coaches?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

so why doesn't marion hobby answer to the defense as

Jan 15, 2016, 10:13 AM

a whole, as does the offense with ScElliot... because it's in name only?

dabo's been clear about the shared responsibilities, if only people would listen first?

So it's Dabo's fault...got it. Should he be fired?***

i hope not, i just want it fixed. is that OK?***

I'm with you. If Pearman accepts the coordinator title

Jan 15, 2016, 10:29 AM

even if it's just for the paycheck, he still gets to take the heat for poor ST play.

Ultimately it is Dabo's responsibility and he has to fix it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that's ridiculous, marion hobby is CO-DC, but we

Jan 15, 2016, 10:46 AM

don't go to him as we do with ScElliot.

we gave coach hobby a title, because we needed to match money he was receiving from duke as DC. coach hobby has never coached anything, but DEs with clemson.

it's all on dabo for setting it up that way and no title, in name only, will change that.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So, the ST Coordinator shouldn't take any heat for poor ST?

Jan 15, 2016, 1:16 PM

He should get a pass? He's not co-coordinator, so I don't get your point comparing this to Hobby. If you're saying that all the coaches have a hand at ST, that's fine too. Should Venables not take any heat for bad safety play? Should it fall on Reed only?

The only opinion on this that matters is Dabo's, but absolving Pearman of any responsibility for the ST play is just plain stupid. And no, it wasn't just the onside kickoff...kick return for TD, blocked FG, our inability to return kicks (though we did well on Monday), etc.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

sure, if he was solely responsible he should...

Jan 15, 2016, 1:52 PM

but danny is not and dabo's lay out how it was shared.

brent venables is the end all be all for the defense and is why he, dabo & ScElliot are made available to the media as coordinators with the power the word entails, while assistants are not...including danny pearman.

his title means nothing here, that's not my doing. is that always the case? no, but dabo was clear that special teams was a group effort with platooned responsibilities and dabo answered for them.

dabo has not been shy about taking or placing responsibility and has not stuttered when a change was necessary, including a close friend in billy napier who was shown the door with powell. did dabo fire the position coaches when he and steele parted ways? no, he threw out the bath water and kept the babies... i <3 me some brooks; we're lucky to have him.

honestly, it's not difficult unless you make it so. all that was disseminated to start is what dabo answered earlier in the year. as for marion, he has a title as CO-DC, but it does not carry responsibility for the whole, where the same title in the case of clemson's other CO-Coords does. what's in a title? nothing if it doesn't hold sway, power or responsibility and danny doesn't. it's just a name.

and no one that i'm aware of absolved danny of any wrong doing, he has his share as does any involved in special teams under the way it is currently set up.

...but singling out danny pearman as holding sole responsibility or being the end all be all, nah, now that's no bueno when dabo lay it out otherwise.

i 'magine only our opponents don't want to see it fixed. it's difficult to imagine there won't be a lot of heart-to-hearts or come-to-jesus then changes made, even if they don't appear significant to outsiders.

it will be asked... again, i'm fairly certain of it and honestly, i don't care what it takes, even if that means saying fairwells or moving people into new positions with real & ultimate authority.

every bit of that is on the captain of the ship.
