blown out of proportion.
The leaflets justifying slavery were there for the taking and this is sometime in the early '00s. Lots of confederate flag stuff in there too. Not to mention, the BBQ was shi>tty.

The hash is very good, but a little greasy.
The buffet sides are legit. Better than Shealys and other midlands bbq places.
The literature was tucked over in the corner. It's not like you had to pledge your allegiance to the Grand Cyclops to be served or anything.
I know the old man's family has been working like dogs to recover the family business after he did everything in his power to run it into the ground with his racist stuff. He's dead. His family are decent enough folks. It's safe to eat there again and still maintain your virtue.

have ever seen one. It is well-documented that Greenr don't like Mustard based anything. When we went, I was hoping they may have an alternative to try. They didn't and so I just ate dry BBQ so it was Shi>tty.
The literature was on the counter, IIRC...but again, this has been 20-ish years ago. And I think this wasn't the main location, if'n there were multiple locations.
It was enough to stand out years later though, certainly not tucked in the corner.

Other stores do too, just has a different name (can't recall it right now). Look on the label, if it's bottled in West Columbia SC, there's your pretty clear sign there.

a fair trade rice paddy, while authentic Gullah women chant and stir the sauce and a shrimp boat captain plays seafaring ditties on his accordion. As he's reaching peak excitement, he dips the tip in the Wadmalaw Sauce while screaming "Groin to Table"!
It's what gives the sauce its briny, musky character, and why it's something that just can't be approximated elsewhere.

and realized there's commercial for Maurice's is permanently etched in my mind.
We'd be watching the local news and during the break that one 30 second spot would come on. It must have been around the time the flag went up outside the Piggy Park and they were getting bad PR. A black woman towards the end says "I luh dey ribs."
Saw my brother last week and we were cooking ribs and I guess it stuck with him too because, sure enough when biting into the first piece of meaty goodness he said it and we both chuckled and remembered the origin. It's not surprising we would internalize those lines, probably as a coping mechanism of sorts because it was always followed by my dad beating us mercilessly with a set of jumper cables.
