Why did you post an article behind a pay wall?

Here is the Dan Lanning portion of the article.

Oklahoma's search has become the focal point of the carousel, and two prominent defensive coordinators are getting significant attention, according to industry sources. Clemson's Brent Venables is the familiar and not surprising name, especially because he worked at Oklahoma from 1999 to 2011, and has relationships with Bob Stoops, athletic director Joe Castiglione and other key figures around the program. The other name is Georgia's Dan Lanning, whose profile reminds some coaches of Stoops, hired by Oklahoma from Florida after the 1998 season.

Lanning, 35, is overseeing Georgia's historically elite defense this fall. Although he has worked under Georgia coach Kirby Smart since 2018, he brings a background from outside the Smart-Nick Saban tree that could suit Oklahoma particularly well. Lanning is from Kansas City, attended college in Missouri and came up through the Todd Graham coaching tree at Pitt and Arizona. He later joined Graham protégé Mike Norvell at Memphis. Lanning is known as an elite recruiter and could bring an SEC perspective to an Oklahoma program that soon will join the league.

Oklahoma is expected to interview Lanning sometime after Georgia's SEC championship game matchup with Alabama on Saturday.

Oklahoma has a long history of hiring assistants without head-coaching experience to oversee its program and Castiglione hinted that he would not be afraid to take that same path in replacing Riley.

"Why would I change models?" Castiglione said on Monday, though he wouldn't rule out a sitting head coach over a rising-star assistant. "My benchmark is hiring the best coach for the University of Oklahoma and always has been."

The parallels between Lanning and Stoops, who was 38 when he landed the OU job, are notable. As a Power 5 assistant who knows Lanning well said of the Georgia coordinator, "He's the next Bob Stoops. He could be [at Oklahoma] for 20 years." -- Rittenberg
