Unfortunately, it sounds like you are in the 0.5-1.0% that have negative side effects.

So far so good for me except for the anxiety. I really struggle with it but have dealt with it before I was prescribed a statin. Good luck to you sir and I do hope things get better for you!

Statins are not a panacea & 50% of users still have heart attacks..

and know that moderate cholesterol levels are not dooming and also eating eggs does Not cause high cholesterol.

And Yes, the Docs & Pill companies seem to be aligned..plus most Docs are not learned about nutrition & exercise which could alleviate or lessen many diseases.

Saying, 75% of Americans are overweight with up to 50% being obese and with proper food (containing less Sugars & super processed boxed foods) we would lower these horrific numbers in less than a year of correct consummation & lower portions of whole enriching foods mixed with exercise.

PS: Last year my United Health Care rep (my secondary provider after Medicare) called me to let me know I hadn’t taken my yearly allotment of statins and asked why..and that my primary Doc would be docked (as it were) since he wasn’t doing his job (of prescribing them). Whoa, eye opening and led me to get off them Jan 1st, 2022 and will be monitoring my CL to see results in 3-6 months.

Right LBB. Just because you take a statin does not mean you can eat a cheeseburger every day. If you do, you will still have a cardiac event.

I went to a low/no carb diet combined with intermittent fasting to get my A1C down (was in prediabetic range). This plus exercise not only significantly lowered my AIC to normal but my cholesterol/triglycerides as well. Seems counterintuitive intuitive, but it works for me.

Wife got off statins several years ago. It attacked her muscles and she could hardly function. She is much better now she is off the statins.

Make sure you are taking COQ10 at least 200 mg.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

^ May need 300 mg based on newer guidelines.

Mar 5, 2022, 3:02 PM

And people Not on Statins can take a CoQ10 since it helps energy levels.

Statins kill everybody one cell at a time. I am in the 0.5-1.0% of people that this happens to very quickly. In the remaining 99% of people the damage happens too slowly to realize it's the statin.

Possibly statins may be saving 50% of users but that figure might be the same with a placebo pill.

Let’s ask Dabo or David Hood what they think OR know. LOL

I take one 5mg of Rosouvastatin a day. It lowered my cholesterol from 223 to 158. I have noticed that it seems to have made some arthritic joints, primarily in a couple of fingers worse. I do take a CoQ10 capsule every day …. Not sure it helps but couldn’t hurt.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

consider these 2 supplements if you don't stop rosuvastatin

they are pricey supplements but much cheaper than long term statin damage

In the US, only about half as many men are dying of cardiac issues these days as was once common. Many factors have contributed to cutting down on the number of heart attack deaths but for many people statin drugs have very likely been a life saver. I hate that the OP has had ongoing medical issues at such a young age. I wish him well and hope he lives a long happy life following the best regime possible for for him.

I am 71 and have been on statin drugs for about ten years with no noticeable adverse effects. All my measurables are better now than they were when I was 60. I think I am more typical in my response to statins than are the people for whom the drugs problems. The average American lives almost 5 years longer now than in the late 1980s. I give the medical and pharmaceutical industries part of the credit for most of us living longer, healthier lives now than was typical when I was born way back in 1950.

I am certainly not educated on the subject in the least. My only experience is being placed on statins for high cholesterol some years ago. After taking them for a while my liver enzymes got all out of whack. I self-quit. I'd rather take my chances with high cholesterol, which I question the science about, than destroy my liver.

Any medication or treatment has negative effects. The question is, do the positives significantly out weigh the negatives. There is even a very small risk to vaccinations, but the risk from not being vaccinated is around a thousand times greater. In my forty years as a pediatrician, which predated some of our best vaccines, I saw fourteen children and adolescents DIE from diseases now 99plus preventable by vaccines. The complications of statins are well known and rather rare. You can be #### sure I take mine.

My physician prescribed statins for me in 2014 at the age of 49 when my cholesterol approached 300. Physically I was close to the best shape of my life having lost about 25lbs and exercising 6 days a week. 6 months later I stated feeling really weak and tired. Eventually it became a task to stand for long periods or even hold a pen and write steady. My physician sent me to a neurologist and I underwent a battery of tests over the next 2 months. My symptoms got worse. There was concern I had ALS. However, after the last nerve conduction study, they concluded I had statin induced myopathy. 90 days after discontinuing the statin, I was back to normal. Scary time.

My GP just reads the labs and since my cholesterol is "out of range" he immediately put me on statins. I am 63 and have a good body composition index and exercise regularly. Family history: grandmother, mother, and both sisters had high or sky high cholesterol their entire lives. No cardio pulmonary issues whatsoever. Had the calcium CT scan done to look for plaque buildup - score was a zero. Suffered from terrible joint pain and other issues and told him I was taking a break from statins (they did reduce my cholesterol). When my cholesterol increased he was right back on the statin bandwagon and wanted me on the drugs and back in for a 6 week blood draw to make sure I was trending in the right direction. I just didn't respond so then the nurses started calling and reminding me of what I needed to do. Wrote a short letter to the Doctor reminding him of family history and test results and simply said I understood the "risks" and was choosing to remain off the statins. Plenty of research available showing the side effects outweigh the risks for many, yet most GP's just keep on prescribing them for anyone with elevated cholesterol. And yes, my joint pain has improved greatly. Add this to to your proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) that are intended for short term use but are overprescribed and overused without ever looking for the core problem. Best to do a little research before being put on these long term maintenance meds IMO.

There has never been an independent research study anywhere that found that lower cholesterol and/or use of statin prevented heart attacks, strokes or added a single day to anyone's life. Only studies sponsored by Drug companies show this.

I've been on statins ever since my test indicated I had high calcification in my arteries. My total cholesterol was always in the acceptable range, albeit at the upper end. I will say statins have lowered my cholesterol but at what cost. I have been struggling with the aches and pains and feeling like crap ever since starting statins. I am currently on my 3rd type of statin and at this point nothing has really improved. I'm considering weaning myself and just stopping.

Other than the before mentioned side effects, the driving force behind me looking at quitting is based on 2 seperate recent studies I read about statin use. The bottom line of both studies said statins will on average add about 1 year of life expectancy to users, as compared to quitting smoking which on average adds about 10 years life expectancy and even helps to lower cholesterol.

My Granny had calcification in her arteries and when she died in 1974 at the age of 84, the doctors and family said it was from "hardening of the arteries". Probably something hereditary for me. I'm internally debating whether the physical side effects are worth one more year.

This will be a discussion point my next visit to the Cardiologist.

Disclaimer - I am not recommending anyone quit statins. It is an individual's choice.
