Should we go after 1A and 2A players?

Dec 13, 2012, 10:27 PM

The reason I ask is with all the shrine bowl going on and hearing press on the players from the smaller schools. Take for instance Mac means a free safety from Lewisville High School; he has offers from North Carolina and Minnesota. I am friends with his coach and he told me Clemson as not even looked at him. Do we keep going after players with a bunch of stars behind their name and wear an under armor jersey or go after fundamental sound players that have a chip on their shoulder and want to make their name know?

I hope we attract better players than Minn & UNC.***

Don't knock UNC. They've always had their share of talent.

Dec 14, 2012, 11:13 AM

But, they always seem to underperform.

Right now you have players like Quinton Coples, Vonnie Holliday, Julius Peppers, Hakeem Nicks, and Jeff Saturday in the League. These guys aren't scrubs.

All time you have guys like Lawrence Taylor, Harris Barton, Dre Bly, Alge Crumpler, Jimmy Hitchcock, Ethan Horton, Natrone Means, probably others.

UNC has always been the one school in the ACC that I can't quite figure out. They have everything in place to be a legitimate force (flagship state school, very good recruiting territory, money) but from an administrative standpoint just seem satisfied to do things halfway.

Tough choice due to competition: Catanzaro & Jennings

Dec 13, 2012, 10:58 PM

Catanzaro played at little Christ Church---he was VERY shaky in his first year, but has become extremely dependable. Confidence has grown tremendously & he has put himself into a chance at the NFL.

Milton played at tiny little Pinewood Prep against 6'-3" post players and had giant numbers & somehow got McD A-A. Stereotypical big fish in a goldfish bowl and he hasn't held up to the scrutiny & has been a big letdown.

Montravius Adams is from a 1A school in GA.***

Jennings came onto the scene not through high school, but through the summer camps. He had a great game defending and scoring on Derrick Favors. I don't get why people are still hung up on the private school thing. Basketball is based on AAU and summer camps.

Clemson used to recruit the old conference I played in. This back in the early 90's. it was a split 2A/3A conference in NC. It was called the Central Carolina Conference. And we had some stud teams back in the day. The State 2A Champ almost always came out of this conference. It was normally Thomasville or Lexington. These 2 schools were loaded with RB, DT, & LB.

We need to grade players for what they can do and not where

Dec 13, 2012, 11:42 PM

they play. granted tougher competition makes that easier but if you can really spot talent, then we need anyone who can help this program get better. I dont care if they play in my neighbors back yard or the number one HS team in America..

Lots of great players come out of 1A and 2A

Dec 13, 2012, 11:57 PM

schools. You can always tell the great one at the skill positions no matter the what level its alot hard to evaluate great OL at any level the NFL miss on OL all the time and they get countless hours of evaluation plus four years of film in most cases and they still miss.

Dalton Freeman was 2A.***

We need to go after players who WANT to play for Clemson.

Dec 14, 2012, 10:09 AM

Stop obsessing over star ratings. I want players who have physical toughness, heart, and who want to be here. Players who understand the rivalry.

Dalton Freeman, Reggie Merriweather, and Gaines Adams are perfect examples.

There's something in these hills.

I don't think you can ignore raw physical stature and talent

Dec 14, 2012, 10:20 AM

completely, nor can you ignore football sense, technique, and instinct.

My beef is that star ratings don't accurately measure these things, and are more about hype than anything else.

I do agree with you, that desire and loyalty should be a bigger component, because college football is a hard job, and if the player doesn't really care about the school and views it only as a job, they won't improve or contribute as much.

You don't earn a reputation as a great recruiter by

Dec 14, 2012, 10:12 AM

going and getting hardworking, great athletes from small schools who don't have high star ratings.

Our HC has two things going for him:
1) He's hired a good OC
2) He's a good recruiter.

Hamlin went to Lamar which is a 1A school. I played against him my Senior year.

I've watched the Means kid from lewisville play a couple times. Hes the real deal. Hope he makes a good showing in the shrine bowl.

There may be more FCS prospects in the 5A and 6A ranks,

Dec 14, 2012, 8:18 PM

but that is not to say 1A and 2A don't have 'em, too. We should go after all the kids who are what we need, regardless of the size of their school.
