Any good movies lately?

Jun 20, 2018, 3:07 PM

I watched Only the Brave. It's not great but worth watching.

I liked Incredibles 1. Was it as good?

Is Black Panther great or is it overhyped?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Spend the $2 at Redbox and watch Black Panther

Jun 20, 2018, 3:26 PM

If you like Avengers type movies, then you'll enjoy it. Not as many aliens and more 1v1 conflict.

Haven't seen Incredibles 2 but it's received massive viewership so far.

I y don't like Avengers type movies. Although, I did like Deadpool a lot.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I thought it was great...

I thought Thor Ragnarok was better than GOG 2 but not as good as GOG 1

Daddy's Home 2

Jun 20, 2018, 3:32 PM [ in reply to New Jurassic World looks good ]

Hereditary

Jun 20, 2018, 4:05 PM

Haven't seen it yet, but want to.

The Death of Stalin and Super Troopers 2 are both worth seeing.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am not a SuperTroopers fan, but...

Jun 20, 2018, 4:19 PM

I will check out that Death of Stalin.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've heard good things about 2 out of 3 of those

Jun 20, 2018, 4:31 PM [ in reply to Hereditary ]

Hereditary seems like one of those movies that critics love but general audiences hate. It's at 90% on RT but only 56% of audiences like it. I usually side with critics and I've heard very good things about it so I'm hopeful.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My guess is it doesn't have a happy, tidy resolution

Jun 20, 2018, 4:33 PM

If you like Super Troopers at all, you'll like Super Troopers 2. People forget that the first Super Troopers had bad reviews, too. Like you, I go more with the critics than the people, usually, but the exception is comedies.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Admission: I've never seen Super Troopers.

Jun 20, 2018, 4:45 PM

So, yeah, my opinion on whether to see the 2nd one doesn't mean much.

For Heredity, what I've heard is that there are no jump scares and it's an 'artsy' horror movie which general audiences don't like. Heard it described similarly as The VVitch which I really enjoyed but general audiences hated.

also: the shot seen at the 6:04 mark in this video pretty much sold me on seeing it.

The Witch was great

Jun 20, 2018, 5:02 PM

The audience score on that one being so low just confirms for me why I don't pay much attention to it for movies like that. Not surprisingly, the audience score for another great horror movie- It Follows- is much lower than the critic score.

It follows is also great.

Jun 20, 2018, 5:22 PM

I think general audiences don't like atmospheric/slower horror movies as I bet most of the 'negative' reviews for these movies will list the films as being "boring" which tells me they are somewhat conditioned for jump scares every 10 minutes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Whenever somebody calls a good movie "slow"...

Jun 20, 2018, 5:34 PM

I usually think that person is just kind of dumb.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I mean, it's all just preferences and subjective, but...

Jun 20, 2018, 6:08 PM

I do too.

But note, I'm guilty of thinking films others have liked are boring and couldn't finish them (first one that comes to mind is Lost in Translation) so I try to remind myself that everyone has different tastes and liking a movie or not has very little to say about a person's intelligence* (I hope...).

*Of course there are exceptions to this, like those that LOVE the Transformer movies...

Rampage is aiight

Game Night is a surprisingly good/fun movie

Jun 20, 2018, 4:34 PM

with a solid premise. The way everything is set-up and paid-off (end credits are great) is fantastic.

Highly recommend.
