Dabos stance on JUCO prospects

Apr 26, 2018, 2:24 PM

From what I understand, he doesn't go after juco players bc he wants the players to be able to buy in and get the full experience, which I totally agree with. However, in the past, we've had graduate transfers on the team who've only been with the program for only a year. So my question to anyone reading is, what's the difference in two?

We don't really have the holes to fill with JUCO's.

Apr 26, 2018, 2:25 PM

It isn't needed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You don't take JUCO's unless you have a need

Apr 26, 2018, 2:26 PM

that wasn't filled in recruiting. And they really haven't had a need for JUCO players of late. At least that's my take on it..

GO TIGERS!!

It's not Dabo's stance on it...

His stance is he'd like to fit two or so in:

Who were the graduate transfers we've had on the football team? I don't recall any.

David Olson (QB) from Stanford was one of them:

a transfer from somewhere after he graduated and played a year. He was blocking when the bama guy caught fuller by the ankle on the ko return before the final drive for the NC.

Which, strangely enough, may have helped preserve the win.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is a very good point you make. I think

Apr 26, 2018, 2:35 PM

JUCO or one-year grad students who are playing aren't just filling holes if they are good enough. I know during the West era when Pryce transferred in from Michigan he made quite a difference in what really only amounted to less than a full year. But he was a beast. West needed all the help he could get though. Sorry for digressing. Nevertheless in my opinion a player who has two or three to play two is better than a player with one to play one but agreeing with Dabo the best situation is to not need JUCO talent although there are certainly some good, very good ones out there.

From what I inderstand from somebody within the program

Apr 26, 2018, 2:49 PM

Clemson does not have a lot of programs that align with the prominent JUCO programs. So it is hard to recruit a JUCO in based on transfer credits alone.

Clemson has liberal arts and biology thats the main types of transfers

I also think Dabo does not want underclassmen who have been in the program and working and progressing feel like they will be displaced by a JUCO transfer. I think he feels committed to those he recruited. This is much like not running kids off like other programs do.

More like it would be a huge surprise..

Apr 26, 2018, 4:23 PM

... if a juco would ever be a better option than a current player.

We do not have, and not had, holes needed filled.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.

Big difference in a grad transfer and a juco.***

Not sure of his exact stance, but the issues with JUCO's are pretty well documented. They tend to have issues with academics and to some extent character issues. Programs who use them tend to have to use them, because there are no other options. Also, Clemson's academic standards are not conducive to JUCO transfers. I also have heard, I do not know if this is true, that a recruiting tool we have used in the past is the fact that we do not go after JUCO players. This means a lot to an incoming freshman. It means the coaching staff is not going go out and recruit a physically ready D1 JUCO player over a High School commit, and speaks to the mindset of the development of the younger players. It is tempting to go after JUCO guys, but you are rolling dice when you get them....

Re: Dabos stance on JUCO prospects

Apr 26, 2018, 4:55 PM

It has more to do with it being too hard to try and get JUCO's accepted into Clemson. Grad transfer is a totally different animal and most times a Grad transfer is a depth need only. As far as the JUCO's you'd have to talk with the admissions on why it is so difficult. But on the other hand another school can never accuse Clemson of of a JUCO coming in to take a guys position and it happens and coaches use it to negatively recruit against other schools with it as well.

We've been getting so rich in 4 and 5 star recruits we haven't really had a need for Jucos. At least that's what it looks like.
