Dabo Swinney...The good, The Bad, and the Ugly!

Oct 20, 2013, 3:06 PM

First of all, let me say I like Dabo. He is a great man and seems to have great values. When Tommy Bowden departed ways and Dabo Swinney was named interim coach, I thought he did a good job with what he had to work with. But I was firmley opposed to hiring him as full time Head Coach. I thought Clemson needed to chnage directions and go with a proven head coach. Over the past few years, I started to believe in Dabo a little. I thought he could work as HC but needed to hire great DC and OCs to get that done. At first he did not, but now that we have Morris and Venables, maybe. I like his spirit and he does represent our U very well to the Media. But he is sort of a oxymoon when it comes to where to place him as a good coach. So here it is, The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.

First, the Good. Dabo is the first HC to beat the following teams in a very long time. Virginia Tech, Auburn, Boston College, and is the first ever to beat LSU. He has won in the last couple of years all of the ACC teams he has faced, except FSU. Something that has not happened in a very long time. He won the ACC in 2011 and Won the the Atlantic in 2011 and 2009. He also beat Miami as well, thought Bowden did that too. He has indeed done great things here at Clemson.
The bad. His teams has been very inconsistent. IN 2009 he did well but then fell apart but then did well, Kinda back and fourth, but he did win the Atlantic only to fall to what seemed inferior USC team. In 2010 he played Auburn very well only to lose, but then fell apart. The lost to BC that year hit me hard. we went to a Bowl only to get humiliated by South Florida. in 2011 we started out strong, ranked in the top 5 in the BCS, and detroyed UNC at home. After that game, Clemson would go on to only having one more good win, (and another win over a terrible Wake team that took a last second feild goal) Clemson played horribe in Carter-Finley not to mention William Brice(not yet) and then the one shining moment in Charlotte to go one to our first BCS game and show thw whole world why Clemson does not belong in a BCS game.
The Ugly...4 straight losses to South Carolina. Not happend around these part since my grandfathers young. But not just losses, but blowouts. His record vs Carolina is deplorable.
So there you have it. Don't misunderstand this as a post calling for his job or anything. he is here for a while and a change now would be a mistake. But its time for Dabo and his staff to grow up and learn what it means to run a major college program. I am hoping for a turnaround this season. Yes its only one loss, but it was a very damaging one loss, like the Orange Bowl was.

they need to get back to the basics: block, tackle and hit. Our offensive play calling has been atrocious for several games now. Run the #### ball! What happened to the reverses, variety of screen passes, who called for a pass to an inexperienced tight end on the first play of the game, score of 17-7 FSU leads early in second quarter and we have it approx. midfield--what do we do--throw 2 passes that Andre the giant could not catch--- Run the #### ball! On defense we sat back on our heels and let them hand it to us. Where were the blitz packages.
I hate to be critical but this is reality!!!

Good points. I agree with all. It started with the game plan

The lack of execution just exacerbated it. Venables said so; Morris, ehh.

One word - Inconsistent.

Oct 20, 2013, 3:15 PM

Why? I think it has to do with talent and youth. Dabo started with a small class of very young guys and has built year by year on that foundation. The team is still a work in progress and is one to two years away from having all the pieces in place to reload with high quality redshits year in and year out. The trend is up, and I think we prove that by curb stompping a Scar team that is in turmoil this year. Each year the team is a little more consistent, they just have not arrived yet. Perfection is the direction, not the destination yet.

really? i feel we step back to a total rebuild or overhaul

after this year. we lose too many vital players at key positions. we lost Nuk, Ellington, Freeman, and Ford last yr. and the O has struggled as expected. now throw in tahj, sammy, hotrod, brandon thomas, and shatley....check back in one yr. from now and tell me about the foundation.

This ain't grandpa's coot team

Not saying we should have won last year, but pit isn't all on Dabo. Usuc has had better teams Plain and simple.

LSU didn't want to be there, thought they were screwed and

Oct 20, 2013, 3:21 PM

we only won because of poor clock management by Les Miles, who is famous for doing that in some big games.

We were blown out by an inferior GT.

We were blown out by underdog WVu.

Under Dabo, like TB, WE ARE SOFT AND DO NOT PLAY WITH REAL FIRE.

We are only marginally better under Dabo, still soft, and bad against physical teams. EXACTLY as I predicted BEFORE we hired Dabo.

ditto edisto...but I still like Dabo better than CTB

Oct 20, 2013, 3:34 PM

cant help but pull for him to be successful, as I want our Tigers to win big and hope it happens on dabo's watch. but he is a CTB protege...I mean he even played that "half the teams lost today" card during his presser.

Let's be realistic here. Dabo is not anything more than a recruiter, spokesman and motivator. He is not a good coach. Morris and Venables do all the real coaching.
