Dabo needs to increase the punishment every time someone

does drugs. It should get to the point that if you do drugs, you are GONE. PERIOD. The BS needs to stop at some point. There are tons of athletes out there waiting for their chance to play for CLEMSON, and if they want to be a part of what Dabo & Co. have created, then they had better make an early decision to eliminate crap like that from their lives. Condoning their bad behavior just makes them worse IMO.

It would get to the point where if you get caught jaywalking, you go straight to the electric chair.
Oh wait, now that I think about it, that might be a bad idea.

Before injections Ohio used the chair and had for years. At one point they suspended use of it because theirs was old and deemed unsafe. I thought that was the idea.

Such an old way of thinking.

Do you ever stop and think about the fact that super harsh punishment simply doesn't work?
Some countries will cut your hand off for stealing or sentence you do death for possession of drugs. Guess what? People still do those things.
Do you really think kicking every slightly troubled kid off the team for a first offense is a good idea? You think that he is going to be better off back at home and likely on the streets instead of under the guidance and discipline of someone like dabo and co?

Punishment...
Mar 17, 2016, 9:36 AM
|

We all have to remember these young men are 18 to 20 years old...they are going to make mistakes and make bad choices. The one thing I would like to see is possibly more random drug checks. Not sure if or how often they check the student athletes. Maybe more meetings to ram down their throats how the represent Clemson football and to make better judgements. These young men are going to do what they want and anyone feels they will never be caught. Hope they realize what an opportunity they have and get their heads on straight.

I agree, these are young men and they are 100% responsible for their actions. I agree that we should make sure they know they are not just representing themselves when the don the tiger paw and that their actions reflect on the university.
One thing I do want to point out is that the majority of Dabo's players BY FAR are staying out of trouble (or at least out of the news for it). It sucks when 2 or 3 guys make it appear like we have a problem every year.
Think of it this way, just having 1 or 2 teenagers in your house can be a challenge. Now imagine having 50+ that you are responsible for. I'd say Dabo and Co are doing a great job.

Since it is illegal and against the rules something has to be done to make these kids aware that the coaches are serious about zero tolerance. More random drug testing just might be the answer and potential problems can be found before they reach the level of going to jail. If the kids know there is more random testing then it would hopefully be a deterrent

You make more kids do it making it illegal. After that you ruin lives. The real people who are destroying society are the ones fighting it destroying lives. The rest of us can make our own choices and makes mistakes and bounce back. The people that are destroyng the world are law enforcement and judges. People would grow past those stages, but the cops and judges won't allow that. The real criminals are those in the system making excuse for their careers.

There is no thinking in that practice. Dabo is like a surograte father to these boys, many never had a father in their lives. A father doesn't cast a son away on first infraction of house rules. I have no doubt the OP is just talking chit, I know he wouldn't treat his son like that.

Drunk in public is a crime, you ever commit that one even of age? If so, can we fire you and possibly have a hanging?

As a coach, one of the questions we have to ask when a player gets into trouble with the law is "is that player going to be better off without football?"
Take for instance a player who gets caught stealing from a store while out with a group of guys he has no business being around and is arrested.
If we kick him off of the team what is he going to end up doing? Hanging out with that group of guys more.
Yes there will be punishment and he will have to jump through all kinds of hoops before he ever expects to see the field, but if we kick him off the team and send him home, the likelihood of him getting into trouble again is increased.
Sometimes, football doesn't need the kid, the kid needs football.

WITH football. Now you minimize the consequences based on a prediction that football is keeping him from committing more or more serious crimes?
Sounds like the logic that criminals get worse in jail. Well, probably so but they have to have consequences for their actions.

> WITH football.
Most of these incidences happen right before Football start. Usually towards the end of the summer.
Now you minimize the consequences > based on a prediction that football is keeping him > from committing more or more serious crimes?
I'm not sure what you are asking here but if you are saying that we are trying to cut down the incidences of him getting in trouble... yes. that's it correct.
> > Sounds like the logic that criminals get worse in > jail. Well, probably so but they have to have > consequences for their actions.
We don't tell the cops not to prosecute them. We don't say he let them go and we will handle it. they still go to court. Usually if it is something minor like stealing or drug posession they get community service. We work with the officers and courts to make sure they are doing what they are suppose to during that time. So I guess to answer what I am assuming you are saying.... no we don't try to get them off the hook. We work hand in hand with the court system to make sure they are doing the punishment.
Also let me point out that I am talking minor offenses. If it is a major offense like drug trafficking, rape, murder, etc Where they will be getting jail time, they are dismissed from the team and the court system handles the entire thing.

I agree. I just hope we do not get to the point we are like Bobby Bowden and his FSU program. The man tolerated everything in the name of trying to help the athlete.

There's a difference between tolerating and actively seeking to help that person. We typically have a 3 strike rule. We will do punishment, contract, etc. 3 times. After that you are permanently done with the program. Don't care if you are a freshmen. You will never play for us again.
Kid keeps doing the same bonehead stuff over and over, he needs more help than we can offer.

I'm all for the players suffering the punishment if caught breaking team rules--but should failing a drug test for positive pot (1st offense) result in getting kicked off the team?? Its probably easier for an 18 year old to buy pot these days than to buy a six pack underage---its everywhere---
I think Coach Swinney's got a sane approach to an issue thats reflective of changing societal values
(I know nothing about the pharmaceuticals)

than your brothers/sister because your father was tired of dealing with it? That makes no sense if you consider that these boys are just like children to Dabo and some of the older Clemson people. We really consider that which is best for them to be best for Clemson.
We don't know how many of the boys who leave are forced to leave, perhaps Dabo has this all worked out already.

Luckily it doesn't matter what any of you guys think, including yours truely. Dabo will do the right thing based on the facts of the case, and the punishment will fit the crime per his judgement, which I trust absolutely.
