Dabo is barking up the wrong tree

Say what you will Dabo, but mentioning Tyler Venables hit out of bounds (which was a terrible call) several times in a post game press conference and chewing him out on the sidelines in front of everyone, when he is the son of your defensive coordinator is just plain stupid. Brent Venables is doing more with less than any coach in the country. He would be the first one to be hard on his son if necessary. Meanwhile letting off your QB (when you refuse to allow the back up a series when he has worked his tail off to come back from a serious injury) by saying he "played his best game of the year", when anyone with half a brain has seen the same issues with him game after game now, is just not smart; not to mention your lack of criticism of our offensive scheme and coordinator. All of that kind of talk demoralizes your Defensive coordinator, the team and many in the fanbase. You are sounding like your old boss with that "one play away" mentality with most of your comments focused in the wrong direction.

Venables is the most important coach on the entire staff. We could lose Dabo tomorrow, TE should have already been gone, I could go on and on; BV is a must retain and possible we need to consider promotion to HC

I'm confused. (Not talking about you, specifically. I read posts, but pay very little attention to who writes them. I don't know what, if anything, you have said in the past about Venables sons.)

One one hand people on this board are saying that the only reason Brent's two kids are on scholarship is because they are his sons. They say the two kids are being given special consideration.

On the other hand this post seems to be saying that Dabo shouldn't have chewed him out because he is the coach's son.

What I saw was Tyler hit the guy while he was clearly still in bounds and it was on a horrible call. (Mike Golic, Jr. agreed with me.) But, on the other hand, given the situation (down and distance) Tyler shouldn't have hit him anyway and Dabo was justified in "explaining" to Tyler that he has to be smarter.

So, as I said, I'm confused.

Well said.

But I have to say in Tyler's defense, he kinda stumbled and wasn't trying to hit the QB. Good pursuit. I have zero problem with any of the coaches sons being on scholly. They've earned it and especially CBV sons play good football.

It's amazing the defense is doing as good as it is even against Cuse given how devastated they are with injuries. But I agree with the post, Dabo went overboard to even mention this in the presser.

In my opinion, it was a good football tackle, a clean hit,

and not stupid at all. The Syracuse player was still very much in bounds, and Tyler did not put a dirty hit on him, or anything close. Tyler was just doing his job, and it happened to spill over, somewhat awkwardly, out of bounds. At first glance, I can see why it may have looked bad to a casual observer or the untrained eye, or to someone who did not have a great vantage point (Dabo), but Tyler was not being reckless or pushing the envelope at all, and trained officials are paid to know the difference.

BV has coached him to follow through. You don’t and the receiver can possibly cut back and stay in play. It was a bad look

It wasn’t a late hit personal foul. It was roughing the qb. You can argue that it’s ticky tack, but Tyler still needed to be smarter in that particular circumstance. He did extend his arms while shoving him to the ground after the qb threw the ball, which is called a foul more often than not against a qb.

Thank you for being the only rational one here. It had nothing to do with being out of bounds. He semi shoved him two steps after the ball was thrown. Just no reason for it other than the frustration of not getting to him in time. That stuff happens though and Tyler played pretty good I thought, maybe his best game yet.

It was a terrible call, and Tyler had a teammate stepping into him from behind. He basically fell into the QB, which was not intentional and was a long way from being "late" or "roughing." I think Dabo was out of line yelling at him and talking about it after the game, but he may feel the need to be harsher to the coaches' kids to avoid the appearance of preferential treatment. Also, Dabo does not have the benefit of TV coverage and replay and it probably looked worse from the sideline in real time.

"Trained officials are paid to know the difference." Unfortunately, training for ACC officials is telling them not to pull the little ball out of the whistle or it won't work. What makes it worse is that I believe they use electronic whistles these days.

If Dabo was yelling at everyone consistently I would be fine with it. Correcting him for his non mistake is fine as long as he is grabbing DJ by the face mask and spitting mad yelling in his face for the plethora of stupid crap he does. Yet every presser is a defense of DJ and TE, two of the likes Ray Charles can see aren’t qualified for the job

I know some people have criticized the playing time of Jake and Tyler Venables and Will Swinney, but I think most people are like me. You hear comments about having limited scholarships. Then you look at those 3 and think "there's 3 right there that could go to someone else."

Whether or not they are deserving of the scholarships is irrelevant. Do you think the kid that plays baseball for Vanderbilt that doesn't pay tuition because of the endowment thinks they should take the scholarship from the kid that would have to pay? The coaches' sons would be fine with giving up their scholarship so that someone without their financial advantages could have one. That is what is so confusing to me.

I think the point of the original post…

Oct 16, 2021, 9:06 AM

Was to point out a perception of hypocrisy with Dabo. He chewed out Tyler for the penalty, heck he even chewed on Brent for the illegal substitution penalty. However, you didn’t see him chew the center out for that drive killing bad snap, or chew on DJ for the bad passes or Ross and the other receivers for the drops. And since Elliot is in the box you don’t know for sure, but you can assume that he didn’t chew him out for the bad play calls (ie a pass on 2-3 that resulted in a sack).

Right or wrong, like it or not though it’s kind of always been Dabo’s style. Treat the offense with kid gloves and treat the defense like a red headed step child (at times).

This has always been the Dabo way, for better or worse. Seems he knows how to “coach up” different players and who can take it. Each player will react differently, depending on their personalities I guess.
I saw how he’d rip Bouleware a new one, then when DW made mistakes, he was much gentler.

You aren't confused you have it right. Poor situational awareness by Venables on a third and long play. Most of the poor mouthing just comes from people who just have an innate desire to be angry and want a weekly scapegoat

The hit was in bounds, but it was roughing the passer. He clearly did not have the ball. Given the probability of him completing a pass from that position and running backwards and almost out of bounds, it would have been a better choice to not hit him.
As for Dabo and mistakes. It seems to me he coaches them all the same. He does not get in the face of physical limitations - he does when they are mental - like this one. If he did not discuss with V and he does with others - the wolves would come out and start screaming about discrimination etc.

The issue you bring up is telling but not for the reason you mr post outlines.

Dabo called out Tyler because Tyler can take it. I get the impression that some of our players are lacking mental toughness and have fragile psyches. Some of that is exposed by their play. Tyler’s actions on that play could have been controlled. It comes from a mentality of wanting to be aggressive. That is something you have to turn down and the players who have that mentality can typically take being called out. They typically take it as a challenge to be better. Dabo has also known Tyler very well for most of Tyler’s life. This is not a typical sophomore that Dabo met three or four times prior to the kid getting on campus.

It very difficult to call out panic, anxiety,”seeing ghosts” or “hearing footsteps”.

F You Dabo. Tired of his sanctimonious bull crap. His coddling of DJ “Can’t play a Ukelele” is unforgivable. Fire swinney and start over

flag link

Looks to me like Dabo knows he can yell at the defensive side of the ball. Why? IDK.

Oct 16, 2021, 9:31 AM

Tougher, more depth, higher expectations, etc. To me it appears that side of the ball is not fragile and can take it.

The offensive side of the ball is like a glass vase, gingerbread house, or any other delicate item that you folks can think of better than me. If you handled it poorly, it would collapse.

I just wonder….if Dabo’s frustrations are projected on to the defense in an unequal manner, because he knows they can stand up to it?

Because I definitely see(on the game TV broadcasts anyway) it as one sided given the overall performance of both squads.

I don't have a problem with chewing him out on the sideline, it's in the heat of the moment. I have an issue with the post game criticism that Dabo tends to do to take the spotlight off his failures. Seem this is a pattern with him. All about execution, never about game planning or more directly, game management.

Actually, Dabo is right in one respect. DJ DID play his best

game of the year last night. That just goes to show you how dismal his performance has been, getting to his best game was a VERY low bar to clear. :(
