Cynical view on the Disney-YTTV dust up

Dec 20, 2021, 12:38 PM

I think Disney is the bad guy and is playing the long con here.

Disney probably knew from day one negotiations they were going to force YTTV to go dark for at least 24 hours then give them back their toys.

The purpose was to find out how many new subscribers showed up at Hulu Live for trial subscriptions, then how many convert to paid subscriptions and, finally, how many of those new subscribers are still there in six months, a year, etc

I've tried Hulu Live TV. It's crap. Disney has no interest in making it better so they are looking for ways to force it down our throats. Anyone who made a mad dash over there played right into their hands.

It was a villain vs villain and as always they both *win*.

Disney is ALWAYS the bad guy. Like a likable father figure in nearly every thriller, they are the one out to get you. Meanwhile Google/YouTube is the brash hothead that is going to destroy the world for no real purpose. They just want to watch the world burn and collect the data.

Agreed. They wanted to see how many people would cancel and pop over to either Hulu or Disney+.

I am guessing one of two things

1) the number was negligible considering the properties showed back up with no price increases for subscribers

2) the number was significant and YT is swallowing the price increase for the time being and will raise prices later

I really hope it was 1 though.

Ha. They will raise the price for sure as soon as the SEC leaves CBS and goes exclusive with ESPN. All that extra SEC money has got to come from somewhere.

aGREED. We have YTTV and have liked it. If it stayed out for a week I was planning on going to BWW to watch the Clemson game and then enjoy saving $15 a month until football season rolls back around. Having said that, I don't think they realize how many people can do without tv and/or use other options. I would probably just roll with Netflix or basic Hulu if it weren't for not having local news channels. I could really do without those except that we live in a tornado prone area and prefer getting forecasts from that instead of apps.

Yeah…I was surprised how many folks seemed to ‘panic’ and immediately run to Hulu or another service. I was prepared to just wait it out and thankfully didn’t have to wait long.

People don’t usually classify truth as cynicism. Only thing

I can’t say for sure is the part about going dark for 24 hours. But sounds about right

I planned to wait it out and see what happened with YouTTV. But if not worked out before the start of the better bowls I was going to pull the trigger on FUBO. No way I was going to play into Disney's hands by going to HULU. Some of you smarter folks than me may know a way to get a subscription to just ESPN. If anyone does please share.

If you signed up for HULU and cancelled YoutubeTV

Dec 20, 2021, 2:13 PM

you got to watch ESPN, bowl games and basketball that you could not watch on YoutubeTV. HULU had a free 7 day trial and YoutubeTV welcomed you back with open arms and saved preferences and shows.

Not sure how that played right into Disney's hands, but it did communicate to both companies what is most important to you.

I'll be suspending my YTTV account after March

Dec 20, 2021, 5:31 PM

....then after the max 6 months allowed I'll proably reactivate it.
